Cheaper alternative for Pro Plan

I have fed Pro Plan for close to 40 years and my dogs and cats have all done well on it. But the price has increased to $90/bag for a 47# bag of the adult dog food and $70 for a large bag of the urinary tract food for cats. I have 6 large dogs and go through about 3 bags of food per month plus a bag of the cat food. That’s a lot of money for someone like me on a fixed income. The Petsmart manager suggested I try their Authority brand. I’ve also thought about switching to Purina One as it’s similar to Pro Plan and I’ve used it before when I couldn’t get to Petsmart. Any suggestions or opinions?

Have you looked into the autoship on chewy? I feed the same to my dogs and they offer a discount for autoship, and I’m pretty sure I don’t pay that per bag. Plus free shipping .

I just checked, I pay $69 ( before autoship discount) for a 50# bag of Purina pro plan sensitive stomach.

I checked Chewy. Autoship was $85+ for a 47# bag of adult chicken and rice so only about $4 cheaper. Authority and Purina One would be about $30/mo. cheaper but that’s not really enough savings to switch since my critters have done so well on Pro Plan. Guess I’ll just eat Ramen and Kraft mac n cheese.

Talk to your vet.
And/or try Purina One and see how your critters do on it.
I sympathize. My 18yo cat is a very picky eater and I’m always looking for affordable wet foods she will eat that are also good for her, especially during the times when she won’t eat her prescription dry food.

I stepped down to Purina ONE, and then to Dog Chow High Protein because my big kid needs more flesh. I would absolutely do Purina ONE over Authority, I don’t trust any of the brands that aren’t WSAVA-aligned anymore. Also can look at Iams.

I feed Kirkland chicken and rice. $39 for 40lb at my local Costco. It’s the same as Diamond, which is around $50 for a 40lb bag on Petco or Chewy

I wonder why it was $85 for you and $69 for me? I would call chewy and ask. Who knows, they may have some discounts to offer you.

I feed Diamond Naturals. While it’s gone up significantly, 40lbs is $43.99 at menards. Then you get an 11% rebate which I use on the next purchase of dog food.

I dunno that it’s cheaper really but I use this one though in the lamb protein

Compared to the sensitive pro plan it’s significantly cheaper

Here is the regular chxn n rice Wholesomes, not sensitive formula

It’s only like $1.23 per lb

I think it was different bag sizes. The 35# bag is $69. The 47# bag that I buy is $89.

I have fed Diamond dog food before on occasion. My dogs really didn’t care for it and didn’t seem to do as well on it. It had a weird chemical smell.

Thanks for pointing that out, I thought it was 50#

What if you did half Purina pro plan and half Purina one and mix them together?

I would stick with top dog food brands of Purina, science diet and royal canine. Stay away from fad diets, raw diets ( because lack of nutrients and chances of salmonella poisoning) and also grain free diets which have been linked to increased heart disease

I wish i could take my cat to this vet and ask for their cat version of this list.

They probably have one. Just ask

Yeah, this has been largely disproven.

Yes, purina spends money on nutrition research.

But a good chunk of their money goes towards advertising, sponsorships, etc. Stuff that does NOT improve the quality of ingredients or nutrition your dog is receiving.

While I feed ProPlan, I trust purina as far as I can spit. The bigger the company, the smaller the ethics.

The bigger the company, the better it can afford to do more research. The less it has to trust outside labs and researchers.

Exactly how much more research would you like done? What additional things are they gleaning from their research (except perhaps what’s a cheaper filler)?

Reviews every way the FDA screwed the research up.
