Foxtrot’s
I always milk my mare’s and give a bottle to the baby, usually before they stands. They usually take a nap for about 30 minutes and hop up a lot stronger and seem a lot smarter about nursing. Must be the sugar jolt. This gives the mare a little more time to recoop and pass the placenta before having to deal with the baby. Milking the mare kind of breaks in the nipples so it is easier for the foal to latch on when the wakeup. Since I have been giving the baby a bottle ( usually 6 oz, I breed ponies) the foals seem to poop easily. I invested in an Udderly Ez to milk my mares, it has been worth every penny. Plus it is easy to freeze some colostrum for an emergency. And it is so much funny to give the baby a bottle.
That sounds like good care to me. My mare is expecting an ISH in August, but it will be her third and she has a big long udder. The babies are so frail and so much can go wrong, so it is good news that it worked out for the neighbour. Neither she or her mare had any foal experience so it was stressful all round for her!
Chloe
So, how is Chloe doing today?
How’s Chloe looking today? I knew that she was just waiting for me to start staring at my own mare. That’s probably going to start tomorrow, so she can go anytime
Is this the longest danged marestare thread ever???
I would imagine that the infamous Suerte hostage thread was longer last year.
Okay, I just did a search for the Suerte hostage thread. It was 606 pages! Chloe’s got a ways to go
My goodness! - Chloe, you take no notice, you hear?
Congratulations on your beautiful new filly!!! Love the name you chose for her. I missed it of course. I lost my phone line and internet access. Here I was thinking it was the storms that came through only to have the telephone repair man tell me “I can tell you what caused your problem and it’s got four legs.” Uh oh. Yep, the horses chewed and pulled the phone wires out of the box that is on the pole next to their pasture. I didn’t even realize that was the phone box since there are so many old boxes and junk around here that aren’t being used anymore. You’d think that when they came out here before they would have recommended moving it when they saw the proximity to the horses. Reminding myself…I love my horses, I love my horses, I love my horses.
Two foals ago, I parked my horse trailer in the pasture and propped the back doors open to let the foal “explore” that great big metal box for a few days. He explored it all right. He managed to chew through the wires to the hitch and those running back where they went into the tail lights. I, of course, discovered this as I hitched up to go somewhere and did basic safety check, only to discover that none of my electrical stuff worked. $150 in wiring repairs.
I was reciting the mantra to myself later as I reparked the trailer OUTSIDE the pasture. Foals are so cute. Foals are so cute. Foals are so cute.
I have been lurking this entire thread…any updates? I see no Chloe cam and am having withdrawl.
I can’t get her up either. What am I supposed to do, clean my house?!
Oh NO!!! Dont get desperate!
Cam # 2 is up and running.
but that is not Chloe, is it?
No white halter, but she’s huge…
I don’t know what is going on with the cams… everything was plugged in etc and I’ve been outside for the past 3 hours working the other horses and doing evening chores. Until I have the energy to figure out what is wrong, I have changed the channel for the CAM 2 camera and Chloe is on that… so go to CAM 2 for Chloe! that cam is clearer anyway.
As for what she is like… her “stats” are exactly the same as this am. 6.8 for ph, ~300 for ca. She does have a more pointy belly tonight and also has a more sunk in butt.
Whew! I thought that was her!
nope, that is her - the halter is actually lavender (but looks white in the cams) and cory is my chestnut and she has no halter, so i assume that you did see her. I’m just trying to confuse y’all ! LOL (just checking to see if we are all paying attention)
whew, ok, thanks for the update and putting Chloe on cam 2.
I couldn’t imagine cleaning my house at a time like this.
