Co-ownership of pick male puppy? (New Update - welcome home baby :) )

Can’t wait to see pics

Egads. Unusually and unexpectedly large.

(I put the number here, but decided to take it off in case anyone wants to try counting.)

I’ll try to play this fun game! 8? You’re supposed to count spines, right? But if I do that there’s like 20! It looks easier to count skulls.

Re: co-owning, meh. What’s in it for you? Friends are excited for this litter and doing the COTH thing: “what’s one more?” There will probably be future litters and maybe then you’ll be in a better position for a puppy. You could also collect and freeze your boy. I agree with passing on the co-own (and I do co-own a male) and everything Houndhill said.

I’m going 8-9

Oh my goodness!!!

I am really bad at counting…10-12!?

Whew, that’s a lot of puppies!! Fingers crossed she delivers them all safely!

When are they due?

 The vet counted 10, possibly 11. That’s a big litter.

The breeder is discussing the pros and cons of a planned C-section with the repro vet just to make sure all goes well. We know of big litters that went fine but of a recent large litter that lost 8 of 11 because of uterine torsion…so crossing fingers for a healthy delivery for mom and pups.

At this point we’re waiting to see what we have before any more discussion about co-ownership. With this many puppies, I might be able to have 2nd pick bitch, and I do know someone awesome that might like to co-own a bitch…and it’s very possible the 2nd best puppy might be a female anyway.

ETA: due next Tuesday.

It is not the question you asked, but with that many, I would strongly favor a planned c-section. Better to do surgery before the bitch is exhausted

That is a neat picture!

Please follow up with how the delivery goes. And puppy pics, of course!

(and I like the bumper sticker idea)

Planned C-section would be my vote too, not that you asked!

It may be different with another breed, but I’ve known so many with big litters who get halfway or even almost all the way done, then end up having to do a C-section anyway, under less than ideal conditions.

I don’t recall, is this her first litter? If she has previously whelped a large litter on her own, maybe I would be more inclined to let her try to whelp them on her own, but otherwise there are many advantages to the planned C-section.

I have one who hit the five week mark yesterday and she is VERY pregnant. Last litter of 8 she just had nothing left to push–uterus too stretched. I am anticipating another c-section for her. But, since I work in an ER and have done c-sections on tired, stressed bitches, I will cut early rather than late on my own. 3 or less and 8 or more are statistically high risk for needing a c-section.

This is her first litter. I think breeder is leaning toward C-section to make sure she isn’t exhausted - and that HE has the energy to bottle feed pups if they need it. Haven’t talked to him today but that was his thought process yesterday.

I count 10 for sure kind of looks like one more hiding, but can’t tell for sure.
What is the breed again? Sorry, don’t remember

Hey, I agree with everything you’ve said, with this exception:

Generally I would agree to another breeding if there were no puppies or a singleton, with no fee, except if it was a dead frozen dog.

I have known lots of other breeders who, if the breeding was to a deceased male, they would charge the whole stud fee at the time the semen is shipped.

In theory, I agree with this. There is no more of this dog’s semen.

However, I must admit, in the case of someone who used my dog many years ago with great results, and who wanted to use frozen semen from this dog, I could not find it in my heart to charge her other than semen shipping charges.

She was in Canada, so more of a bother, semen arrived in great shape, but I knew all the costs incurred with all the progesterone/LH testing, the cost of surgical insemination, shipping the semen, etc. so I did not charge a stud fee for this particular person.

But, in general, I do think it is not unfair to charge the full stud service amount for a dead frozen dog.[/QUOTE]

Sorry I missed this earlier. Yes, frozen is a different world, different story, no written rules.

I believe that’s exactly what the vet thought, too.

They are Brittanys. (Proud dad-to-be):

Unexpected early delivery last night…breeder was hoping to wait until at least 1st due date before a c-section. 12 total puppies (she is still being watched just in case one more shows up but they think she’s done). 9 boys, 3 girls, but one girl born entangled in umbilical and did not survive. One of the boys is small and struggling…he may not make it.

Good grief. Fast delivery though - 12 puppies in about 3 hours. First one was born just before 4am and last one before 7. Whew.

The Mom and 10 good sized puppies doing fine and everyone is being watched carefully.

I never expected so many boys. Wow.

Wow, big litter!! Frustrating to have such an uneven gender split if you as a breeder are looking for girls to move forward with. However, I will say my current best brood bitch (titled in multiple performance venues) was a default pick as the only girl in her litter from my first fresh chilled breeding.

I had a friend recently who had a litter of ten IW puppies…all males. So at least you may have two bitches!

Glad the whelping went went well.

Picture of mom and 10 healthy babies. 8 boys, 2 girls.

Congratulations! Everybody looks plump and content. Nothing sweeter!

God that’s cute. They are impossibly tiny  Mom looks great considering the csection!
