CO-ownership......?s

X… Thats is exactly what I don’t want to do …is have a exp like your first one. Thats why I ask alot of questions here.

Thanks for all the replies…you guys have been so helpful

In my breed (clumbers) I don’t think you would get a show quality puppy except on a co-ownership. It just wouldn’t happen. Most of the dogs being shown have two or three or more owners behind them. I have co-owned both my clumbers and it worked out well. When I was looking for a puppy I looked at a number of co-ownership options. I personallay wouldn’t do a litter back obligation on a bitch. To many things could happen down the line that I wouldn’t be in the position to have a litter. At least with a dog you can freeze semen if worse comes to worse or ship semen for breeding obligations (assuming the dog finishes, passes health tests, is breeding quality).

For your worries about sending a dog to a handler - I personally didn’t like owner handling (I’m a photographer and would prefer to take pictures) so I would meet my handler either the night before or the morning of shows and she groomed and showed, but the dog lived with me. A lot of handlers do this. Not all dogs go “on the road” and live with the handlers. I would meet the handler for handling sessions every week so she could work with the dog and it worked out well. A lot of dogs are handled that way if you don’t want to do the showing yourself and want the dog to live with you.

And as for boy intact boy dogs and marking - mine never marked. It was a non issue. And mine regularly had bitches staying at our place and/or in numerous hotels all over the country. It’s a matter of training.

I think that if you find a breeder you like and respect, you will not worry about this so much. I would have no problems co-owning a dog with my puppy’s breeder, or any number of other breeders I have met. Most of them are really looking only to a) protect the dog; and b) protect their reputation (by being involved in future breedings.)[/QUOTE]

This is it in a nutshell! Find people you trust and respect and work with them.

I wish more people would actually try to find a mentor. Seems to have become a bad word and all anyone wants to do any more is “learn from everyone”. Which sometimes seems to turn into everyone just saying nicey nicey and not much real knowledge being exchanged. Find a mentor in your own breed and learn about your breed from them. But, don’t discount people in other breeds as well, they can have a lot to teach you a lot as well.
