Coat care after clipping, thoughts?

I just got a recommendation for using Shapleys No 2 Heavy Oil after body clipping. It’s somewhat hard to find online (not too many vendors have it but I can get it.) Does anyone else use this? Any other ideas for coat care for a freshly clipped horse?

I’ll be doing a blanket clip on my horse around Thanksgiving. He has a naturally shiny and smooth coat, and he’s never had issues with dryness or dandruff after clipping, but I’m always open to learning and trying something new. Thanks!

A good curry or warm bath should be all you need. If his diet’s right, you won’t need to do anything else.

I probably won’t be able to bathe him because I don’t have a wash stall with warm water, but I’ve also read about people hot toweling after clipping so I could try that instead.

I hope the photo works, not sure with the new format, but this is him right after clipping last year.

Ohhh lovely boy! I honestly just get the hair off with a good curry

I’ve used the V05 hot oil treatment as recommended on COTH. It was a few years ago, but I think you add the vial of oil to warm water and sponge on after clipping.

Coat moisturizer (the pink stuff, that I think is called exactly that) is great for all winter long, when coats can dry out from weather and blanketing. Just spray on and curry as usual.

If I have access to hot water, I put a little bit of Johnson’s Baby Oil in a bucket and add hot water. Then I hot towel as quickly as I can before the water cools off!

Clearly I’ve been here too long, because I was waiting for someone to bring up mayonnaise. Yes, I said mayonnaise.

I’ll have to poke around and see if I can find those old threads :joy:

I remember that too! But, the V05 treatment seemed less messy :joy:

I just use some moisturizer on them. I have a bottle of cheap hand moisturizer that I slather on them. You can use the more expensive horse designed products, but you just want to make sure the skin is moisturized so you don’t get any irritation

I’ve used it in the past too. Really liked the way it seemed to bring the colour back to my bay horse that looked like a dun when he was clipped. Cheap too and smelled better than mayonnaise.

Supposedly, the mayonnaise is even better than hot oil but I never got around to trying it myself! I can’t seem to find the original thread, just ones that came after where it was mentioned. I do have a Costco membership, so a vat of Best Foods is easily accessible :joy: I might have to try it if I do a full clip on my pony this winter.

Louie doesn’t need anything after he is clipped. This horse hates being groomed too so his shine is mostly from his good nutrition. I don’t use any shine or conditioner products on his coat. I only use them for his mane and tail. I give a soapy bath prior to clipping. Actually, that was his first bath with soap he ad all years since we didn’t show due to Covid.

Just curry him.

If you want extra credit, hand-rub him as well.

(I bathe or hot-towel after clipping because I don’t like to leave residue from clipper oil on the skin, but as far as health of hair coat, feed him well and groom him.)

Vinegar and skin so soft bath is what I do.

I’m so allergic to SSS, that when I managed a farm that had a boarder who thought it worked as mosquitoe repellant I made him spray his horse outside.

I like to hot towel with a capful of Dettol to cut the grease and then a few glugs of mineral oil. Super hot water (I use a kettle and have to add some cold water) and really ring the towel out. I use it like a curry comb in small circles and it really gets the grease and dust out. Looks and smells like a million bucks and my barn smells good too!

Equifuse has this leave on conditioning rinse (does require a bucket of water at least) that is great. It’s actually fabulous pre-clipping because it makes the hair soft and slippery. Yet does not cause tack slippage!

My guy loves to sleep in his pee, and this stuff helped me keep him a little cleaner between baths over the summer, and I used it pre and post clip this fall. But he also is a bit dandruff prone.

You could maybe use a bit less of it and hot towel with it. I’ve also put a little bit of the pink conditioner stuff in a bucket for hot toweling. But the Equifuse doesn’t get gunky on the coat like the pink conditioner does eventually.

I use Healthy Hair Care moisturizer after, and then continue to use every time I groom. Put a bit in a bucket of hot water and hot towel after clipping as well.

Am I the only one that has never thought about coat care after clipping? I just brush all the cut hair scraps off and go on with my day. Admittedly horses are clipped after bathing, but I don’t do anything after I cut my own hair, why would clipping a horse’s coat be any different? I’m going to have to ask around my barn now and see what everyone else does…
