Conditioning hair sprays without build up

I have been using a few different kinds of conditioning spays for mane and tail, but they seem to either dry it out, or feel oily after a bit. I don’t over use it, i brush and spray and leave it alone. I have used the Healthy Hair Care, which i like, but it sometimes leaves the mane feeling a bit gooey hours afterward. Not a lot, but a weird feeling. Then i have used Eqyss brand Avacado Mist, which smells wonderful, but idk if it is doing a good job with conditioning. Then there is Laser Sheen, Which i used many years ago, and i cannot remember if it worked well. Do any of you have a favorite leave in spray that keeps manes and tails from getting too brittle?

Not a spray but I really love the Eqyss Premier conditioner. You put it on a clean tail, wet or dry, and leave in or rinse out. Combined with Show Sheen, I have gotten a nice tail this year and I don’t find that the conditioner leaves the tail gooey or weird. It feels like conditioner, obviously, and then the tail feels soft and the hairs don’t break as much.

I know with people, when conditioner makes hair break it is usually a protein intolerance. Some people can’t handle proteins like silk or wheat and their hair gets super dry. Some people aren’t necessarily intolerant of a certain protein but still find that some products don’t work with their hair’s porosity, so someone with low porosity can have trouble with heavier stuff like coconut oil or shea butter.

Not sure if horse hair is the same way (I’m sure there are some variations between individuals) but something to think about if some products are making the hair gross.

This is what I use too, and I wonder if you aren’t diluting it enough.

One time I “mixed” mine too strong and I got that feeling too. But when there’s enough water, you shouldn’t.

Are you doing about 8 parts water to 1 part Healthy Hair?

I have been using Infusium 23 leave-in conditioner for 20+ years and love it.

Benign neglect.

Too much washing with shampoo and brushing and combing is going to wear out manes and tails.

On the other hand, I find if the horse has a lot of pasture time, the real culprit is sun damage. My mare’s mane definitely gets sunstreaked on pasture. If that was a concern to me, I’d find something with a sun block.

If you are one of the Long Mane and Tail breeds, you might find it useful to put the mane up in big thick braids to protect it. Though that always looks to me like it would make it even easier to rub out chunks of mane.

  Diluted 1:1 with water is all you need even then. Light, works well, cheap.

My suggestion is more helpful in the summer, but I apply mild hair conditioner (human or equine) to tail and/or mane immediately after a ride. The Vetrolin UV conditioner is nice when I have it handy. I let it sit for a few minutes while I put away tack, etc. Then rinse it out when I hose him off. It keeps the hair soft and helps with breakage, and you don’t have to spray anything on the horse.

This!
It is not always easy to find, but works great!

yes i am.
and it is not gooey to the point of being a problem, just feels that way after a few hours. I don’t use very much, so idk why.

i don’t give many baths a year. maybe a couple, that is it. he is on Pasture board with a shelter, so maybe it is the sun.

Bite the bullet and buy some Equifuze. A quick scrub with the citrus shampoo, rinse, then sponge on the Rehydrinse conditioner and you will have soft, silky hair.

I try to avoid anything containing “cones” (silicone, etc.) and have been happy with Mane & Tail Conditioner/Detangler spray. Hair always feels clean, not coated and overly slippery.

I adore the Carr and Martin Dreamcoat. The BEST coat conditioner. Smells divine and never gets heavy or sticky. Likewise with their mane and tails spray. Amazing. Just enough slip to get the tangles out but it does not leave the hair feeling like it is coated in junk.

No silicone so it takes a day or two before you notice the results. I use it daily on my horses tail and it looks awesome. People have also commented on the pleasant smell-even my farrier has mentioned it!!

This is hands down my favorite conditioner- and it has residual effects so the tail stays silky, smooth and conditioned for days. I probably don’t even need to use it daily but I love it too much!

Agreed! I learned this from a Morgan trainer. Like JB, I dilute mine but more than 1:1. It’s inexpensive, and it doesn’t leave any sticky or gummy residue.

I gave up on finding it in the stores (plus, the price is insane), so I order from Sally Beauty Supply. Generally can find a deal and get the 33 oz for $7 or so. I just buy 6 at a time.

I don’t dilute mine, but I might give that a try.

I use Infusium 23. I dilute 2 parts water/1 part Infusium/ a few drops of tea tree oil.

If I can’t find it or I run out I grab some on my kids Cantu detangler and mix 1:1 with water. Its a good standby, but smells so good I always worry about his mane/tail getting chewed on.
