You have the right to ask but errors do happen. Just let it go. I’m assuming there is not some massive prize money involved.
I don’t think you were a jerk, unless your approach to the secretary was really poor. It’s fair to want to check that the scores in your division were properly recorded. That’s why scores/placings are provisional before they are finalized! It sucks when you have no data signal and can’t check scores. I always worry that if I’m near the end of my division and concentrating on cooling my horse off, I will miss the inquiry period if I have to walk to where they’re posted.
I’ve only had to inquire about my scores twice—both times it was an error in my XC time of one whole minute! (Once a minute slow and once a minute fast, which at Modified was wildly improbable.) If they can have my time off by a whole minute, they can definitely miss a stadium fault.
I was very polite and apologetic. After all, secretaries work really hard and I’m grateful for what they do!
Yeah, I will survive
Did you make an effort to speak to the President of the Ground Jury?
No because I’m a weenie
This would be a ground jury question, but tbh if the judge didn’t record the refusal and the announcer didn’t announce it, unless you have video you’re unlikely to win this one.
I kind of figured…it’s ok
I’m not sure I totally understand the scenario (another rider in your division had a fault recorded at the wrong fence? or not at all?) but I don’t think there is anything wrong with politely inquiring about the posted scores or about what you witnessed.
Practically, I think it’s much easier to inquire about your own scores than someone else’s, which adds another level of uncertainty. Even then, results are going to be mixed. I don’t think you should feel embarrassed or deterred from inquiring in the future if you see a penalty go unrecorded.
So, was the number of penalties correct and the refusal got recorded as a rail? Or was it not recorded at all?
Not recorded at all
The proper protocol is to ask to speak to the TD. The TD is paid to deal with inquiries, the secretary isn’t. (It is an inquiry at that stage, not a protest or “contesting”.) The secretary SHOULD have told you that, and called the TD to meet you at the offie.
Ah “inquiry” sounds better. My bad. But Oh well
What I don’t understand here is the rider in question not approaching the TD, ground jury or secretary to correct the error because surely they knew that they had had a stop? Very bad sportsmanship.
The rider may not have known that the score was recorded wrong and had just gone home.
I know nothing about this situation, but I have inquired about an error in my favor like that and they didn’t change the scores because they didn’t have record of faults (time penalties in my case). If the stop never got recorded at the time, even the rider bringing it to their attention may not matter, if the judge/scribe never wrote it down.
A rider missed an entire jump on xc at our area championship last year and took home a ribbon and prizes: the jump judge recorded the mistake but the scorer missed it, from what I heard. And nothing could be done.
That’s awful.
That kind of error seems particularly difficult to identify during the review period, unless spectators saw it.
Based on the pro video that was uploaded a while later I’m sure spectators saw it but they assumed the jump judge would record it (they did) and that it would then be in the record. It wasn’t!
