Controlled loose leash walking

I’ve done Will Atherton’s on-line training courses - he is good and uses sound solutions. He is honest that he is not a competitive obedience or agility trainer and really admires those trainers. I love watching his training sessions with “Uncle Solly” - his yellow labrador. Man, that dog has impulse control!!!

I think I’m fostering the perfect dog for you. :joy:

I wish you were closer to see if it would be a fit.

She’s a doodle of some sort, wonderful off leash, super considerate of space, but Velcro. Moderate energy. 35ish lbs - longer than tall.

She’s wonderful on my farm and great with other animals. Very happy go lucky. She loves to be outside.

She has to be exercised appropriately and takes time to warm up to new people.

i actually applied to adopt a Labradoodle but he was already adopted so the rescue asked if I could do an urgent foster and that is how I ended up with the Lab that is with me now.

I have always had “fluffy” dogs. Poodle, 6 Bouviers, 1 Bearded Collie, 1 yellow long haired mut, breed unknown as he was the size of my hand when dumped at my mail box.

Have you tried something like this ? Works on my SUPER RAMBUNCTIOUS GSPs. You have to be quick on the release and reward.

Bottom loop over the nose, second behind the ears. There is a stop on the lead above the second loop. This one is made of bison hide and very soft but strong. The correction can be quick as you can hold the lead short behind the dog’s head, preventing him from geting a distance away. This also prevents the dog’s head from being pulled to the side, resulting in a 90 deg stop. The GSPs wear a harness when I want them out front to do scentwork.

Unfortunately with any gadget around his head he throws himself on the ground and with his paws tries to remove it.

Because he is so sensitive and otherwise well behaved my trainer and I are now working on mind games and behavior training rather than physical restraint. She feels this a much kinder approach for this dog.

We are making progress.

I’m glad you are making progress. He sounds like a good dog overall, just not the right fit for you, but you will find the right fit! (Luvmyhackney’s foster does sound perfect!)

My elderly neighbor had a Maltese/bichon type dog. When it passed away, he got a black lab puppy. That dog is now huge, and he walks him with 2 harnesses and even so, has to make the dog sit whenever something exciting comes along (such as… anything, really). I felt bad for the guy.
I went from Std poodle to mini poodle and he used to joke this was the right move and he should not have gone the Lab way . Fortunately, he moved to his son’s neighborhood and the son will be handling the dog.

If anyone on this board wants to add to their collection of canines, she literally is the easiest dog in the world, just needs boundaries and continue working on her place command and down command. Plus what ever else you want to teach her, she’s very smart and highly food driven but not obnoxious about it.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from you.
Just wondering how you and this good dog are doing?

I have officially adopted him. Gave it a lot of thought. Though leash walking is still challenging he has so many good points. He is clean and well behaved in the house, non destructive and does not steal anything. He is very clingy and follows me from room to room and always lies at my feet.

We have fun in my arena where I can let him off leash. Recall 100 % at full speed. Scared me at first as I expected him to wipe me off my feet but comes to a screeching halt with a sit beside me. He has learned to “sit and wait” until i move to the far side of my jumps and clears a three strided combination with good form ending sitting in front of me.

His eyes are very expressive and he listens attentively when we have a conversation. It is extra work as I still have to keep him on leash for potty breaks as I am afraid to let him loose. He is not thrilled being alone in my dog run so often I will sit with him and read.

I would worry about him if he had to leave here and adjust to another change in his life. He is very sensitive. I wish i knew how and why he ended up at a wildlife shelter as a stray.

Yay!!! Congratulations!!!

And

He is very sensitive. I wish i knew how and why he ended up at a wildlife shelter as a stray.

I adopted a female stray GSD from a rescue a number of years ago. She was already spayed, was housebroken and otherwise wonderful. She was apparently found in the woods in Michigan and brought to Ohio (where I was at the time.)

Turns out she was A) incredibly athletic and could scale the highest privacy fence in a jiffy and B) highly sound-sensitive. Yes, gun (and thunder, and fireworks) shy. If she was living in a wooded area in Michigan, I can imagine exactly why she was running.

Enjoy your new permanent pooch!!!

I have pictures on my phone but don’t know how to transfer them onto the computer. I will try with my camera. Unfortunately I haven’t learned how to navigate my new computer as far as transferring pictures. But I will give it a try soon.

Thank you all for your interest. It does get lonely on the farm at times though I do have good friends IRL.

Not starting anything political but it is depressing what is happening all over the world including global warming. Have been having difficulty coping with the heat lately.

Congratulations on your new companion. :hugs:

To transfer pictures from my phone to my laptop, I connect the phone thru the charger cable to the laptop and a tab shows on laptop asking if I want to connect both.
Clicking on it gets me to my picture album and on the menu there a place to click on Iphone.
That shows me the phone pictures on the laptop, I click those I want to transfer, click above on the transfer button and there they show up on my photo library on the laptop.
Then I post them here from that, as I did above picture.

Something similar may work with yours, try that?
