Corgi Destroys Every Toy!!!

I have a year old Corgi who is an awesome dog. Smart, well mannered, loving and adorable. He has one habit I need help with. He is a chewing machine. He constantly destroys toys…like in 20 minutes of receiving them.

He destroyed a “tough chewer” dragon my german shepherd had for years. Shredded it. We bought him a few toys designed for tough chewers…claimed to be indestructible. He had it opened and yanking the stuffing out in like 10 minutes.

It’s getting expensive. He never chews stuff he isn’t supposed to, thank goodness…but I need suggestions on what to get him to keep him happy. We do have a kong he hasn’t destroyed. Also, soup bones raw seem to keep him entertained for a while. He loves squeaky toys so I was hoping someone would have suggestions for us!

Attached is a photo of the toy destroyer for reference! Thanks in advance! http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c345/Jamie2337/IMG_2610.jpg

Bones and kongs. My dogs are toy destroyers too. The only non-kong toy that has lasted is a length of nylon lead rope (I only use cotton)…they play tug of war with it and it’s going on 6 months now.

Only toys that my destroyer has left intact are those mentioned above and these:

Picked up some supposedly tough toys at the pet store the other day. It took him ten minutes to completely eviscerate them. My other dog is bereft that all of his toys have no squeakers or stuffing. I usually pull out the stuffing and squeakers and leave them for the dogs.

Destroyer will pull and pull at a seam until he hears the satisfying “rip.”

BTW, Jeffers has them cheaper:

ANTLERS !

I have two powerful chewers. I found only a very few toys that they wouldn’t eat holes in and destroy in a matter of minutes  Then a friend suggested antler chews - and boy what an overwhelming success they are!

Our big dog started with a large deer antler which lasted a short while, but not long enough (although when it got too small for her I gave it to her little sister, a 9 lb. JRT). We got the big dog a large elk antler for Christmas. She loves it and hasn’t really even made a dent in it yet! The elk is more dense and better for the really enthusiastic chewers I guess.

Anyway, we are thrilled with these chews. They can be a little expensive but you can get them online for less. We’ve just gotten them at our local pet store so far.

I especially love that the antlers are all natural, not treated with chemicals and toxic materials (and come from the USA and Canada). And they don’t splinter like bones can (so they’re very safe). They are the “perfect” chew toy and the dogs love, love, love them.

Gumby and Millie (Pembrokes) are 1st class toy destroyers, too. Only toys that have ever lasted were a kong (neither of them like that much and don’t mess with it often), and a red rubber barbell that we got when Gumby was a puppy 11 years ago. It has withstood the abuse, but is getting weary  We recently did get two toys, a ring and another barbell, PetCo “tough chewer” or something like that, and they have both lasted for several months even tho’ they both get hard use. I looked for them at the last PetCo we were in, and could not find any more of the same type toy. :frowning: We gave up on anything stuffed, with rope, or soft when Gumby was a puppy.

A word of caution - keep an eagle eye on even the hard rubber toys. When Gumby was about five, he chewed off a piece of a hard rubber toy. It got stuck in his intestine, and we had to have it surgically removed  He did ok, but it was touch and go for quite a while - chunk did not show up on regular x-rays, only barium x-rays, so it was a bit before the vets knew what was making him so sick. Very scarey.

Here is a link to see the toy destroying machines…

We also have gotten the antlers for both of them, and they do chew them for a while before they lose interest - guess it isn’t as much fun to not be able to rip something apart.

The Hard boiled softies are great - but only the blue egg part. My toy-eating machine loves it - but had the cover off and ripped to pieces within ten minutes.

The rubber egg part is nice though - it rolls when he bounces on it and gives off a lovely squeak that wakes everyone within ten miles. He thinks it is delightful, especially before 7am.

I can’t get my corgi to be even remotely interested in toys… unless there is food in it lol. My lab on the other hand sounds exactly like your guy. We’ve given up buying him stuffed toys as he can put a hole in anything in under 5 minutes. I too have a kong, I’ve also gotten one of these: http://www.dogsgonuts.com/?gclid=CLrpgvCS5K0CFU2b7QodaiE00g in the stick variety. These toys have a lifetime guarantee… if you ever see red you ship it back to them with $5 (to cover shipping) and they send you a new one.
My biggest issue is that the lab isn’t as interested in the indestructible toys as he is in the ones that he can tear to pieces lol.
I also currently have something similar to this: http://www.wayfair.com/Zanies-Monkeys-Fist-Knot-Rope-Dog-Toy-in-Multi-Color-ZW848-ZAN1185.html?refid=FR49-ZAN1185_5045686&PiID=5045686 but with super sturdy rope and it had a shorter handle. Yes he can tear it up but it’s lasting much longer than most of the other destructible toys.
They also get the soup bones and also antlers.

well, the OP’s aforementioned destroyer is an absolute heart stealer, so i’d say the chewing is a trade-off…lol…corgis are soooooo photogenic

i have two large and one small destroyer…L.L.bean has some large bones made of some sort of flexible, indestructible material (not hard like kongs, gives a good workout to the jaws)…i got them in the store, so dunno if they are available online, but the retail stores are popping up all over.
they are about 12.00 each, but mine have been here since spring, and the only survivors in a lost list of casualties

your corgi is so cute!! I have a chihuahua cross and he has chewed eveything soft I have gotten him. But he loves his Huck from West Paw Design - and I see that they are sold out–

good luck!

My Corgi is almost 2 and destroys most everything. I have yet to try the Antlers but have heard good things. I did get her the Marrow bones and those have lasted her a long long time and keep her happy. She has no interest in Kongs or rubber type toys. Only ropes ( which last maybe a week if I’m lucky ) or the bones…

Hardly looks like it could do much but I have a Corgi and understand! Too, too cute!

Thank you for all the suggestions! Where do you all find the antlers?

I love West Paw Design for toys. I haven’t priced antlers, but I know I see them in the In The Company of Dogs catalog. I also use a lot of Planet Dog rubber toys. I had a bad incident with ingesting a stuffed toy plus the stuffing a few years back, and after that I’ve been really leery of any stuffed toys at all unless I am literally right there. Good luck with the puppy - so cute.

Hi Jamie,

Your puppy is just adorable!

I’ve just picked up antlers at a local pet store but the prices online are much, much better! You can find them everywhere online. Pet Edge is a large online store and I’ve done business with them before (great prices on all kinds of pet products). They have antlers for really good prices too.

The size you need is based on your dog’s weight. The pet store cautioned me to take it away once my dog had “whittled” it down to too small a size for her (don’t want any choking). As I mentioned earlier, the deer antler I got first was whittled down in a few weeks - but no splintering or breakage at all. The elk antler seems much tougher and is lasting much longer.

My dogs adore them.

You’re lucky if only toys get destroyed! Our youngest corgi is only interested in what she can destroy, and she has destroyed alot of things. Things with squeakers are only of interest for the 30 seconds it takes Lilly to remove said squeaker. She’s been more destructive than any of the many labs we have had.

Thanks for the suggestion about the antlers. Now I need to find something the other 2 corgis WILL play with. If they can’t eat it, they have zero interest.

My guys like the antlers lots as well. I have noticed that they last longer if you buy the round ones rather than those that are cut in half length-wise (with the marrow type stuff showing). Both my feed store and my pet store have them.

They have great toys, and the rate them by “chomps.” So 5 out of 5 chomps is really durable, 1 out of 5 is NOT for your boy. A friend has a lab that is a mighty chewer, and we buy his toys here.

well, first, I suggest you make a distinction between “chew” and “toy”. A chew is something the dog is expected to gnaw on and possibly consume, basically a “food item”. A toy is something the dog plays with. Which may include ripping it to pieces, yes.
I usually keep the toys put away except during supervised play time, and provide chews for chewing time.

Lurker venturing out here.

I agree with Wendy’s sentiment. My dog was an epic toy destroyer also. And she loves soft stuffed toys. She’s very sensitive to verbal commands and reprimands, so I was able to teach her to be more gentle on her toys. As soon as she sat down to really “get to work” on a toy (either by standing on it and pulling out stuffing or getting it between her back teeth and gnawing on it) I would “EEH EEH!” and then say “don’t destroy it.” The eeh’s would stop her in her tracks every time. She didn’t get to play with stuffed toys if I wasn’t around to supervise. Eventually she learned that those two previously mentioned behaviors were not allowed.

I decided something had to be done when my mother got her two new stuffed toys for Christmas last year and Maya proceeded to destroy them both in front of her within 15 minutes. My poor mother desperately wants a human grandchild, but has to settle for the four-legged kind–so I have to make it as easy on her as it can, lol!

Now, we have a living room covered in (intact) toys because they all last so much longer. Some of them even have holes from normal wear that she hasn’t pulled the stuffing through yet. She was able to connect the reprimands to only the destructive behavior and still enjoys her toys, she was never afraid to play them.

However, when another dog is over and tug of war is played, I have to expect some casualties. The poor stuffies just can’t hold up to tug of war.

Edited to add: Now we can just give her a reminder of “don’t destroy it” if it looks like she’s getting a bit too destructive with her toys.
