Cornet Obolensky, if not, Argentinus or Arko III?!

Hi Hi!

I have made a decision to breed my mare, first time ever! Yuppie

But this is where all the headache started – it’s exciting but the more I look into a choice of stallion, the more I get confused and undecided on what to go for! I must say, one of the most valuable information I’ve managed to get a hold of was on this Forum! So I thought I may as well throw all my ideas, worries, and questions out there, hoping someone can provide me with some more information.

A bit about my mare: sire line: Goodman – Graf Grannus – Grannus; dam line: Ramina – Ramiro – Raimond. She’s very tall at 172cm, rather skinny and fragile. She seems to have difficulty building muscle; particularly her hind is not as strong as I would like to see it (any errors ever made in a jumping course are with her hind legs). She’s been successful in jumping competition so having observed her, if there’s anything I’d like to correct is to add more flexibility in bent and agility in the show jumping course. One thing she does certainly possess is a wonderful jumping technique and unbelievable power.

Here are few pictures of her:

My top choice is Cornet Obolensky but semen seems to be rather limited and I have had trouble ordering it (my mare is stationed in Poland). I am waiting patiently but not sure my mare can hold off much longer  we seem to be slowly approaching end of breeding season. My 2nd choice is a tie between Argentinus and Arko III – Argentinus seems to possess that muscular built that she is lacking but having Ramiro and Grannus already, might be too much adding another “tractor” to the family? Arko III on the other hand has obviously more of that “elegant” blood line from his dam line that could potentially create a nice result? But I have heard negative comments on quality of his semen + the fact that he doesn’t have any renowned offspring puts me off, slightly.

Is Cornet worth the wait? If not, would you go for Argentinus or Arko III?
OR MAYBE YOU HAVE SUGGESTIONS FOR A 3rd CHOICE among renowned and proven international sires?

Many thanks in advance!!!

Argentinus is one of my all-time favorites, so he would get my vote : )

What about Lordanos, more and more offspring coming up and some already internationally. Check out the homepage of stud Sosath in germany. Semen maybe easier to obtain and certainly cheaper than Argentinus plus for sure more rideable than Cornet Obolensky offspring…

I am a huge Cornet Obolensky fan! I wanted to breed to him this year but it is so hard to get semen. He is such a hot commodity right now!!

Thank you all very much for your contributions!

I know there are lots of experts voicing their opinions on this forum. Could you please kindly post some suggestions in the context of my mare?

That would be extremely helpful as my head is spinning at the moment from all these choices

Is it worth the wait for Cornet? I haven’t seen any mention of Arko III – shall I scrap that option?! I am happy to invest in Argentinus, just need to work out if he’s a good match for her.

Look forward to more posts!!! THANK YOU

Indeed Agentinus and Cornet Obolensky are quite formidable horses… but what do you think of a mixture between their characteristics and those of my mare (tall, rather skinny + sire line: Goodman – Graf Grannus – Grannus; dam line: Ramina – Ramiro – Raimond).

My head is spinning at the moment from all these choices and I would really appreciate some expert opinion on the matter!!!

I have used Argentinus semen and would not suggest it in this situation. Since he has died the semen is extremely expensive, and fertility was always very poor. You are far better off going foal shopping and buying a top quality Argentinus foal with the conformation, sex and type that you like. In fact, you are better off calling the studfarm first and asking what they have for sale, or looking at the foal auctions in the fall.

Even though Argentinus has not made any great sires yet (made great sport stallions, but so far no great breeding stallions), I would like to try Arko III because he is just such a special jumper and has a great mare family. There is no pricing, availability or data on the doses in America yet.

We just bred a mare to Cornet Obolensky 1 week ago. The doses are small (4 straws), so I don’t think it is an easy or cheap breeding. He could require multiple cycles for a pregnancy.

Breeding is not for the faint hearted.

the first question you should ask yourself before making a stallion choice is:
what are you breeding for?
a foal for yourself or for sale?

if sale is your goal go for cornet.

if you want to keep it for yourself and later on ride it yourself the next question is:
how good/experienced are you riding/jumping?

if i was to breed a jumper for myself cornet would be out of the question, argentinus and arko probably too hard to get semen/pregnancy.
plus, none of them would compliment to your mare’s back/topline.

actually, my first idea was lordanos and it made me smile when i read kareen’s post suggesting him, too.
greatest ridability and mind, super scope and skill, probably a good match to your mare/topline, to add more swing in it (which is probably the reason you ask for improvement of flexibility in bent)

anotherone having produced great foals (closed up and engine working even in trott) and super ind and ridability himself is light on (happens to be a lordanos son)

bloodline total outcross to your mare.

backing up on the R in your mare and known to be of lighter production (typewise) easy handling, cear double talent is rockwell, succesful in S dressage and jumping, can be ridden by kids. best semenquality, easy to get by.
can be found at a.m. webside, too.

my favourite at that stallion station however is rockforever, another doubletalent and super foal and type maker. bundeschmapion (or vize champoin i believe) in dressage but jumper, too.
pedigree purest jumping, the “R” doubling up and complementing your mare to the favour (since no heavy heritage in these stallions) with landstreicher as 2cd sire adding type grip and lightness.
i have never used or recommanded stallions from that station but since it is close by i get to see lots of their progeny and can tell how they “function” under saddle. and they do. given what i have seen from rockforever’s get the last two seasons i have become so curious that this year’s foal inspection at that station is a firm “must” im my calender as i would even consider that stallion a double oriented sire for one of my mares (i never thought i would…)

again:
my recommandations refer to a foal you want to keep for yourself building on ridability and gaites/double talent - a horse that’s hopefully fun 7 days a week under saddle, not just at horseshows when a professional rides him for you.

Rockforever ? Please look at him from the behind if you see him next time. Saw him at his licensing and was really taken by him, than saw him at his first BC where he was good and was sitting so that I had all the horses from behind. I reember fairly well that that was the moment to cross that stallion completely of any long list for any of my mares. I saw him a few years later again watch closely from behind and could not reversemy decision. A great stallion in the side view though !

Lordanos

WOW! Thank you so much everyone for all this extremely useful information!!!

I am now thinking… LORDANOS!

My intention certainly is to bread a foal to keep. Seems like this guy has an amazing character and I must say, my mare isn’t the easiest to deal with, particularly during competition when she gets extremely excited and loses her mind. Even though you can say she is rather experienced by now, having competed for few years, we often observe her nervousness in combinations with two or more fences. She then tends to lower her rear and knock it down with her hind legs. She demonstrates incredible technique on single jumps, particularly oxers – she’ll jump over anything you put in front of her but in combinations she tends to lose her composure.

I’ve contacted the stud already about Lordanos, no issues with semen and from what I’ve read about him, seems like a great fit for her! Particularly since it will be our first attempt at breeding her so I wouldn’t want to complicate things any further, ordering lower quality semen.

Anything more to add about this stallion? Any more comments? Suggestions?!

I’ve always liked Lordanos, wish I’d been on the stick years ago about him! Good luck!

Lordanos semen is great quality, and has never caused reaction in any mares I have known. I am talking frozen semen. Good luck, and have fun. I think I have some videos of him on his page, if you haven’t had a chance to see him live. He is also very very level headed. The Sosaths will take good care of you.

How tall is he?

Flipping this conversation around, who would you bred a Cornet mare to in order to put the rideability back in?
Edit to add: Would Lordanos be on that list?

Lordanos

We inseminated my mare yesterday with Lordanos  fingers crossed!!!

Thank you all for your advice!!!

o.k. Ilka than I as the first mentioning him want to see the foal next year - promised ???

I have bred to Lordanos, and the foal is just gorgeous. He is only a yearling at the moment, but he appears to have a lovely movement, very athletic, and the friendliest little boy I have ever met! He has got a very pretty face too. His name is Ludger.
I have one mare in foal to him again this year, and will use him again next year. We have a fair bit of his semen in storage.

The photos don’t do him any justice!

Alexandra - PROMISED!!!

Rachel, Ludger is such a gorgeous looking little guy!!! This certainly reassures me in my choice. Do post more as he grows up
