This popped up on my Facebook feed. Pretty cool news!

As excited as I would be to be working with a horse like that, I’d also be worried about how much scrutiny I’d be under from armchair quarterbacks everywhere.
Boy, he looks like a war horse with that short thick neck. Love his coloring! I’m excited to see who gets him and what they do.
I wonder if he is still entire, or if he was or will be gelded. Gelding sounds like a good idea. No point in passing on failing race horse genes (even if his mom and dad were great). And might make him more manageable.
I’ glad he is getting the chance for a 2nd career.
The article states that he is now a gelding.
What a big powerful dude! I remember reading that John Shireffs said that he had a pretty tough personality. It will be interesting to see what he grows up to be!
there have been several posters on COTH who have raved about their Bernardini horses as sport horses. This guy has a great future ahead of him
It sounds like he’ll be better suited to his new career, whatever it is. It will be interesting to see what they do with him.
It’s amazing the faith that people put in breeding horses, expecting success with their decisions. And even with the best care and training, this can be the result. A non racehorse.
It would be fun to give this one a try in jumping disciplines. That free shoulder movement in his mother was always encouraging for good use of shoulders over fences. I wonder if he has it too?
Good luck in your next career, Cozmic One! (PS, please don’t change his name when he gets to the shows!!!)
Right? I also wonder how one facilitates such a thing… Asking… for a friend…
halt, you don’t… look at all the Chromies who knew far more any any of his connections
Cozmic One’s saving grace is he isn’t as well known as California Chrome so the number of people scrutinizing One’s career should be fairly small.
I meant how do you facilitate with a major racing connection that you are interested in a horse after retirement without coming across as a complete nutter? Unless I am misunderstanding your response (which I think I am.)
The de Souzas are pretty well known…he is a managing partner of a big TB farm and has connections to start a conversation with the right people. I read somewhere it was being negotiated for a year. It wasn’t someone with a backyard farm wanting to take Zenyatta’s first born to a horse show.
I think I was more referring to the ‘oversight’ of the project and assuming the ‘facilitates’ managing that “scrutiny” rather than facilitating the purchase
Cool. Wishing much success to him!!!
I’m happy for Isabella, I don’t know her personally, but she’s had great success in the open shows and at the RRP specifically. All my KY-based friends love her and I think it’s obvious she and her team are a great choice to transition the horse. I think this is a great move by Coz’s connections, doing the right thing for the horse and sending him to someone very connected and capable, as well as a very public endorsement of moving sound horses on to second careers. They could have very easily (and quietly) thrown him in a field for the rest of his life and let him fade into obscurity. Instead they put him in RRP with a successful young rider. This is a deliberate statement and I love it.
Great move. I hope to see more of this.
Ive had some success with thoroughbredconnect.com. However, I did request both American Cleopatra and Cozmic One, and neither of them have worked out for me so far!:mad::mad:
:lol: So you’re saying I shouldn’t hold my breath for Bar of Gold. Drats!
I just got a Bernardini baby (well, he’s 9 now so not so much a baby anymore lol) a couple of months ago and so far I absolutely love him! He had 34 starts so we are on a slow let down/rehab but his personality is awesome. I wasn’t specifically looking for Bernardini lines but I happened across this guy and got a steal on him.
When I vetted him my vet made a comment about how he was in such great shape because he didn’t run his heart out. I wonder if Coz shares that same trait. Mine won a few but the last couple of years basically just came in last on everything. They can run but they don’t. ?? I look forward to watching to see what comes of Cozmic One (and, yes to the other poster, I would hate to be in the spotlight on retraining such a high profile horse)
@HiraethFarm - it’s hard to get them to run as hard as they possibly can. They either want to or they don’t. They might run really fast, but just not try their absolute hardest. Which is good for second careers since they usually don’t get hurt of suffer from the usual wear. I bet he is gorgeous, though, Bernardinis are usually good looking. Hope you do well with him!
