Hear is a question. Do any of you ladies have a problem with the crotch seam in your jeans irritating you? This is driving me mad!!! It could be the way my saddle is throwing me back or it could be the jeans… It almost feels like the seam is hitting in the “you know what”… Jeans or saddle? i am a small woman and use to ride in a abetta 15in. trading up to a 17 abetta gator. Love the saddle but really… this is annoying! I ride a gaited horse and ride for long hours… answers please!!!
Ditch the jeans. They aren’t meant for riding. The seams will rub you raw. Get real riding britches, or some nice Kerrits schooling britches. No seams in the “wrong places”. Problem solved.
so you think it could be the jeans? They have that bulky seam in the crotch. I have ridden for years and it has always bugged me. I don’t ride with to many women so have no one to ask. The men i ride with , well you know, don’t think they could answer this. Some woman i know said hers did that but she just got use to it! NOT
Yes it is the seams - not all jeans are created equal in that respect either. Some have the double seam on the inseam, some have it on the outside. I think Wrangler makes jeans with the double seam on the outside.
Also you can get jeans made out of comfortable stretchy material. It looks just like denim, but it stretches. You can find them at Wal-Mart. Just make sure the the inseam is not a double one.
I’ve ridden in jeans for ages and never had a problem. I usually buy Levi’s for riding. But the way you are built, the way you sit, the fit of the jeans and/or the fit of the saddle may make a difference I suppose.
Yeah, some women don’t have an issue, some do I suppose. I keep thinking my saddle might be to wide for me. Hard to say… the jean seam hits ride in the wrong place. I rode today and it drove me mad until I repositioned myself in the saddle and jerked the seams out of the way! God! i love being a woman! lol
levi"s are ok I rode most my life in them. Wrangler are horrible. I now ride in real riding pants Kerrets are great. Albiet i was afraid to wear them in front of my friends…they are so comfy so I got over the embaressment

Agreed. I’m another one who’s never had a problem with jeans, even 30 miles/day riding.
If you think it could be the saddle, have you tried one with a narrower twist? A lot of western saddles have a wider “men’s” width twist. What about bareback? Do you notice it then? Could help to narrow down what causes the chafing.
I rode in Wranglers (the men’s version, incidentally) and never had a problem on long cattle gathers.
The seams on most “fashion” jeans are all wrong for riding. The posters above have it right – look for jeans with the double seam on the OUTSIDE of the leg, not the inside, and you should be fine.
Or use purpose-designed breeches.
Try these if you like to ride in jeans:

They are the only ones I can use in my dressage or jumping saddle without being miserable. When I went on vacation trail riding in Portugal during cool weather they were awesome.

couldn’t have said it better myself.
I had that problem for YEARS. Drove me nuts, and I couldn’t ride in jeans under any circumstances. Didn’t matter where the seam was.
Then I learned that I was riding with my lower back arched (think “hunter rider”) and was sitting on my crotch (not the best position). After I changed my riding position, stopped arching my lower back & tilted my pelvis back a little (think sitting more on back pockets) I noticed the “seam problem” completely went away! Now I can ride in any pair of jeans I want. Makes me feel like an idiot that I spent years in discomfort when I could just change my position a little.
I ride western and in jeans and have no problems. I always buys jeans with 2% lycra, otherwise forget it. Perhaps that is the difference. I buy a brand made by Style & Co., and available at Macys. Fashion jeans, but comfy as can be.
I’m confused though. You state you are a small woman, but ride in a 17" saddle. Could it be your saddle is too big and you are moving around quite a bit?

That is what I think has a lot to do with it! I thought this saddle was the trick! But no! I tend to think it is the saddle. I am going to try different things. Maybe switch jeans and try my smaller saddle this week.
ditch the jeans and try some pants actually made for long-distance trail riding. You’ll wonder why you stuck with jeans for so long.
Being a re re rider of a certain age (I’ll never see 55 again) I discovered issues with jean seams when I got horses again four years ago. I rode in denim leggings and exercise pants before making a permanent switch to breeches or tights. I will NEVER ride in jeans again. Also, sheepkins seat savers are the bomb for crotch and butt comfort.
I usually only ride in jeans in the winter, and then they are Levi’s 515 boot cut jeans, that have a little bit of stretch in them. I’ve found that they need to fit right, to not be annoying, so the idea of having a pair of bigger jeans for riding got thrown out the window.
I have a ton of breeches from my dressage days, but have found in the last year these and love them for long trail rides:

Then, I was at Dover a few weeks ago and found these denim Goode Rider breeches on the sale rack:

I tried them on for fun, because the denim was so soft and broken in (I have to admit that I’ve usually thought denim britches to be a bit hokey and not my thing) and I liked the full seat. And OMG, they fit me like a glove, and are the most comfortable pair of breeches I’ve ever had on. I’ve ridden in them a few times now and LOVE them. Plan on keeping my eye out for others on sale…
This is the reason the properly designed breeches are made with no seam under the leg and thigh. They were usually custom tailored also. The seam down the front under to the back should not be a double seam. The old fashioned breeches with the pegs on the sides were made that way because they did not have stretch fabrics then.
We have some fantastic riding pants these days. Look for the ones with a single seam under the leg and no doubled seams in the crotch. I hope you can find a solution and if you do find pants that work, let us know where to find them.
kind regards,
L
I wear men’s Wranglers and haven’t had a problem. My rides vary from 3-7 hours, two or three times a week. I do use a sheepskin seat cover, though. Maybe that’s the reason I don’t suffer.
I ride English in Levis or Wranglers and don’t have the issue with the seams as those are made to be ridden in. I despise breeches and just do not feel comfortable in them. My designer jeans however I won’t ride in as they have the seam on the inside and yeah that just doesn’t go well. They do make jean style breeches and I will be trying those to see if I like those any.
