Custom fitting a man's cubbing coat?

My man’s 36S cubbing coat arrived yesterday. The sleeves are too long, as I expected they would be, no problem getting them shortened.
However, while the coat fits well through the hips/body, it is too big through the chest. The shoulder seam is right where it should be, but under the arms there is definitely too much room/material.
Is this something that can be tailored to fit me better? Or should I return it? I do like it and it is a great color/pattern.
Even if I spent $$ for the tailoring, it would still be a good buy.

And hopefully I can find a decent tailor down in this area. Or, I might have to go to Richmond  to find one.
Thanks!

#1 - What is a cubbing coat ?
#2 - you might appreciate some extra room when riding.
#3 - you don’t really need to be a fashion plate when covered with crap and mud.
#4 - are you trying to fit a man’s jacket to a woman’s body ? - that’s a bit more complex.

Equibrit,

Manydogs is new to hunting. She came for the CotH hunt and participated as an enthusiastic car follower. we are welcoming her back for the next one as a riding newbie.

Hence the search for a coat. She will be trying to re-shape the man’s coat to fit a ladies shape. That does require a very competent tailor. The arm holes can’t be made smaller. Sleeves can be taken in, but then one can’t add all the layers to stay warm. It is annoying to have the fabric in a too tight sleeve grab one when jumping or leaping banks.

Manydogs, what style did you get?

Aha. It would surely be far less $ and trouble to buy something like this;

There is any number available on ebay. just type “hacking jacket” in the search box.

It
Is an rj classics. The more I think about it, it will be going back. I will try it in with layers. eBay has few and far between that will fit me.

Wicker so looking forward to the hp weekend.

Can you tell I’m typing on my new iPad? Lots of mistakes.

No wait!!

Whoa ManyDogs! It’s still a good idea! It’s not hard at all to tailor a jacket. Always easier to take in from a larger to a smaller size. A good seamstress can do it. Yes the shoulders are usually too big and sleeves too long. Not hard to remove the sleeves and make armhole smaller IF its really needed tho’. I LIKE the extra room! Especially for my fat upper arms.!! :winkgrin:Sometimes they can take in the center seam running down the back to decrease the upper room and create a thinner waisted effect. I’ve done it myself and have bought dozens of mens coats and done this. Remember a LOT of “tailoring” can be done by just moving the buttons over too. Talk to some seamstresses first to see what they can do before you return it. Remember this is unisex dressing so if it looks “tailored” and “sporty” it works. Mens coats are usually made better quality imho too!. I prefer them…maybe I’m built more like a man !!! Unisex!! Remember that!!

Manydogs,

We develop well-muscled and toned upper arms from all the grooming and riding. Wait.
It 's from observing our grooms, whilst we lift the picnic hampers of repast into the vehicle. Noo. Try again.

Lifting the champagne and the caviar from the silver trays as we gallop by…

in our minds!:winkgrin::lol:

I bow to the collective wisdom of my fellow HPs and will see what I can do to fit the coat better. It is a gorgeous wool and will look so ooo loverly with either by Ders or my browwwnnnnnn field boots.

Ahem I am developing upper body muscles by grabbing the tops of my muck boots to pull my feet out of the mud. DH scraped away some muck from the paddock today and of course under it is pure red clay.

Custom fitting man’s coat-update bahahahaaa

Watch out Horse Country catalog!
I did as the HP Divas recommended, and tried on the coat/jacket with a sweatshirt on. Amazing! It is now just right except the sleeves. Yahooooeeey! Put on browwwnnn field boots, my warm cordoroy style ariats, said jacket, and gloves…so DH could see where all the $$ went-

durn online banking website spills the beans every time!

“Cubbing”

It’s “Cub Hunting”

JMHO of course!!

No !!
It’s “coat hunting”!!!
Or “seamstress hunting” !!!

We ladies of the Snobbington Hunt DO like Whickers imagery however…thank gawd she’s one of us. Who can lose with members like that!!
wooooooo hooooooo! 'cept for one thing…ahem…MY horses always spook at silver trays so doing the champagne/caviar grab can be…tricky!!

Wateryglen,

If you have your groom take horse treats out to your steeds everyday on a silver platter, they won’t spook at the stirrup cup. Actually they will seek out the trays.

Make sure it is sterling silver. Horses In The Know can tell the difference between sterling and silver plated. Anyway, you have grooms to polish it so it doesn’t matter.

ManyDogs I’m glad the coat now fits. But should you ever need a seamstress who can refigure any type of hunt coat or hacking jacket to perfection, drive up to Warrenton, and see Inga at Warrenton Custom Fashions. She does all the alterations and buttons for Horse Country.

Of course you can also stop in at Horse Country and save all that shipping! and take your new coat directly to Inga for a fitting.

So glad you’re going to make it into the hunt field!

Thanks for the info, Kryswyn-I don’t think I need much of an excuse to head up to Warrenton.
Thanks, too, re the hunt field. I am seriously looking forward to the experience!

Alas, Inga has retired and Horse Country was desperately looking for a new seamstress to recommend when I was there in November.

They have one now and I’ve got her card around here somewhere. But you can call the store and get her number.

Hmmmm, I’ll be up there in March. Hmmmmm.

But, Valentine’s Day is sooo much sooner…

You Do want it for this season, hmmm?
