Day 354 mare is showing no signs of being READY

Today my mare is sitting at day 354. She is not a maiden mare, this will make her 4th foal. With the exception of last year she normally goes at about 354 days (2 weeks past her 340 mark). Today she is showing no signs that she is even thinking of going anytime soon. Unfortunately she is a mare that doesn’t bag up until hours before she foals so milk testing is out. She isn’t showing any of the normal edema that she normally gets on her belly and isn’t acting her normal “I’m thinking of spitting out this baby” self. She is also bred to a much bigger stallion this year and I was expecting her to be absolutely miserable right now.

I guess I am curious as to how many of you have had seasoned mares go past their normal due date this year? I am so frusterated! This is the foal that I have most waited for out of all my foals. This one was bred specifically for a keeper horse for myself.

Lots of mares going over this year. You are still well within the normal range.

had one that went 363 days this year that went at 332 last pregnancy and another that is at 340 days in a day or so that is just starting to think about bagging up.

Have had 13 out of 15 mares so far this year go 354 or more days this year. One went 368 days! Makes for a looong foaling season.

I have no babies due this year, but being only 14 days over “average” is no biggie. If you go to the Equine Repro website, they have an on-going poll (meaning several years) where folks put in the confirmed gestation of their mares.

Only 27% of the mares hit the “average” of 339-350 days. Almost 21% went 371 days or LONGER.

My longest mare went 385 days.

Kyzteke if my mare goes 385 days I think I will strangle her and just be done with it. I’m kidding but why is it always the one that you are most anticipating that takes the longest? A friend of mine bred to my APHA stallion (took her 3 years to get her mare in foal not the stallion’s fault) and she went 368 days. They were absolute basket cases.

'Cause they are mares and they can. Sometimes I think they LIKE to drive us crazy…

My mare is at day 376. Maiden, fat, very small bag. I have no clue what she is planning. Mare last year went 365 and 400+ days.

Derby Lyn Farms - Don’t say that to me. This is this mare’s 4th foal and she has never gone over 354 days until now. Today makes 356 and she is showing no signs of being ready to give me a baby. She is also carrying very high this year. I hope that doesn’t mean that she is giving me a colt.

My single pregnant mare finally foaled at 374 days. She had usually foaled near 340 days, except for the last foal which was a 2011 foal at a little less than 1 year.

This year, her filly was born quite thin and weak. With excellent care - helping the foal stand and nurse regularly until she had gained her strength - she was fine by 24hours of age. Her IgG was very good and mama’s good colostrum quickly allowed the filly to gain weight and energy. The placenta was less thick and healthy looking than years past.

Four out of five of our mares went significantly past their “due dates” this year, including a mare whose first two foals were born at days 335 and 332. Last month she foaled on day 353.

Plan a vacation. That will nearly guarantee she’ll go.
I was just reading about Tish Quirk having to foal out one of her mares at the Del Mar Fairgrounds where they were evacuated to because of the fires. They are masters of inconvenience.

Well it was pouring down rain this morning and when I got up I was thinking I would have a baby this morning because of the rain but nope no baby. My sister is currently in labor and we were joking around that now it would be a race and my mare would foal while I was at the hospital visiting her

I have lost count, I am at day 377/378 and she is definitely foaling today. Tons of wax there this morning and she is very uncomfortable. Big change in her vulva too. I thought she wasn’t going to give me any signs because she is a maiden. Thankful she is showing signs and I am not working this weekend!

I kept thinking she would foal in one of the storms, or at the full moon. But nothing until now. She will show you the signs. Sorry to say you will have many sleepless nights to come.

Good luck Derby Lyn Farms!

OP, do you have a photo of yours?

My mare had a filly around 3am. All went well. Mare didn’t have any sort of bags until this past week. She had filled in a little with bags about 3 weeks ago, but didn’t even look like there was milk until this week. Hang in there!

Congratulations Derby Lyn Farms!!! Still waiting here. VirginiaBred I haven’t taken any photos of her since Mother’s Day. I will take some when I get home today and post them. She isn’t showing any signs that she is ready to give me my foal :frowning:

Thank you!

Ok here are pictures taken today day 359. I hope I can get the links to work.

well… she certainly isn’t “hanging low” is she?

A large stallion, you said?

Hang in there. She doesn’t (IMHO) look like anything is happening soon, but then again, it IS always a crapshoot.
