Day Trip Places to Trail Ride in Georgia/E Alabama

Since my trailer is being built as I type (YAY!), I’d like to start lining up places to go this year.

I already know of Cheatham Hill in Marietta, Kennesaw Battlefield in Kennesaw, Hard Labor Creek and MacIntosh State Parks.

Where else can I go that’s good for a day trip? Thanks!

Rooservelt in Pine Mountain? Boundry in Douglasville. Boundry doesn’t have a lot of trails but they are there.

I ride at Boundary Waters in Douglasville about once a week. Not a lot of miles of trails, but they are very well maintained and there’s plenty of parking. My friend and I are conditioning for endurance rides, so we will do some of the loops several times. I guess we end up doing about 15 miles in all. I almost hate telling other folks about it so it doesn’t get too crowded.

I have also heard good things about Talladega in Alabama. And there’s Dawson Forest in Dawsonville (although be prepared for lots of gravel there).

Glad you mentioned that. I should have mentioned that Rooservelt is VERY rocky on some of the trails. The creek trail and the lake trail aren’t bad at all but the coyote, cowboy and overlook your horse needs shoes.

Chicamaugua National Military Park in Rossville (just south of Chattanooga) has excellent horse trails.

Thanks for the tip about Boundary Waters. I drive by it every time I go visit Freebird down in Sharpsburg and had no idea there were horse trails there!

Any word if the trails along the Chattahoochee River in that area ever got “off the ground?”

Gravel doesn’t bother my Clyde-X. I’ve ridden her over some horrid rocks, sharp gravel, etc. without a wince or chip in her ROCK CRUSHIN’ feets. Amazing feet, really.

Chocollocco (sp?) in Talladega Nat’l Forest near Heflin AL- lots of trails, not many if any water crossings so very little watering opportunities.

Fort Mountain is beautiful but lonnnng stretches of the trails are rocky. Like softball sized rocks strewn all over. just doesn’t make for pleasant riding.

You need to ride at Pigeon Mtn. It’s really gorgeous. Google Pigeon Mtn Georgia for more info. Lots of horse trails. Near Menlo, GA.

We should meet at Boundary Waters sometime!

I think the new park along the Chattahoochee (in Coweta County) is still in the planning stages, but it is supposed to have horse trails. There are a couple of sections of the trail at Boundary Waters along the “Hooch”.

Oh I’d love to RM!

And you’re always welcome to come by me for the Silver Comet Trail time. Granted, the barn ain’t fancy but we’ve got stalls if you need, water, a fridge, etc. (alas, no potty :frowning: )

Plenty of parking room and easy access to the SCT down the hay field fence line. The off-path wood trails are good for conditioning since they can get pretty hilly.

I live in Carrollton. Is Boundary Waters Off 92 by hwy 166?I have tried to ride there but it was closed. Newnan has a new set of trails set to open in July 2010. Carrollton is supposed to open some more by heard county, hopefully soon. We ride at MacIntosh quite often and talledaega. Berry college has opened some of their trails but you need a pass. They are nice trails. WOuld love to meet ya’ll this spring. I am learning how to drive a trailer.

I forgot about Daust park. It is on the other side of newnan.

Never heard of that one and I’m near Newnan. Can you tell me where it is and what it’s like?

Dauset Trails

PJ I have not been there yet but heard about it from someone else. Then I found an article about it in Lifestyles magazine. Dauset is located in Jackson it has 17 miles of trails. There is also a nature center and old farm. The website is www.dausettrails.com. Where in Newnan are you? I am in Carrollton, maybe we could ride sometime!

I’m about fifteen miles on the other side of Newnan from you. I’m heading out to Mcintosh in just a few min.
I would love to meet you and maybe ride with you. Will pm you when I get back home.

Sounds like we need a south/west side of Atlanta COTH trail ride.

That’s a great idea! It would be fun to meet more people!

Sounds good to me!

We could also swing by and grab Freebird… she’s in Sharpsburg at Shady Creek Farm (www.shadycreektrainer.com) - That barn has some nice trails on it too.

Keep us posted about the Heard County trails coming.

I will. I think they may open next year. The paper had a lot of info about them so hopefully it will announce when they are going to open.
I am going to check out Boundary Waters tomorrow!

That would be fun! Be nice to be able to put faces on people, too.
The weather today was beautiful!! Started off with a t shirt and sweat shirt and had to come out of the sweat. Typical pretty Sat at Mcintosh, lots of joggers, little kids, people fishing and a few bikes and dogs. I really prefer Mcintosh during the week when sometimes you have it all to yourself but it’s great on the weekend for a green horse. A section of the trail that I was fond of is closed. The narrow ditch with the sloping clay sides. Anyone know if someone got hurt there? I’ve known of a couple of horses that tried to walk the sides and gone down but they weren’t hurt. They’ve got tape around that section of trail and it looks as if they’ve put logs across the ditch.

LOVIN this weather! Hallelujah!!! Got a nice 2 hour ride in on the SCT yesterday morning. Just a few cyclists and two joggers out that early. It was great!
