DeNiro

I have always admired this stallion but recently heard someone say he was considered “a man’s horse” in Germany implying his offspring were not an easy ride.

Anyone have DeNiro offspring? What were the results? Rideability? Gaits? etc?

In about 10 minutes you can watch Donarweiss being ridden by a young rider (girl) at Gladstone.

He’s all I know of DeNiro, but man is he a cool little horse.

I’ve always heard that they are very rideable & more on the willing side.

Deniro is such an incredibly successful sire of FEI level horses, I’m seriously considering breeding to him next year. Does anyone know how good his frozen semen is?

I have not used his frozen but heard from a reputable semen broker that it is very good.

don’t forget her horse has feiner stern in it too:)

“a man’s horse”

Based on ??? temperment or mass of horse? They can be a bigger bodied horse and not every petite woman would want that. Is that what it means?

Temperment wise… I knew of one who was a fabulous mare in terms of talent and movement but mean as a snake. Of course there’s always questions about how a horse is raised, who the dam line is, etc so use it as a data point but don’t base your opinion on one data point.

Donnerhall produced exceptional temperament in all of his sons and daughters. It is what made him the celebrated sire that he was. That and the fabulous talent that he sent forward.

DeNiro himself has sweet temperament, very ridable. He was and still is a very gifted talent at dressage and started showing Grand Prix at 7. This proves just how rideable and trainable he was - - A horse with “difficult” temperament/rideability will not be able to progress that quickly because too much time is spent arguing with the rider. DeNiro, on the other hand, was very easy to progress up the levels of dressage and, in fact, found the difficult FEI movements relatively easy to master - he won his first Grand Prix test at 7, the same year he made his GP debut. The Trakehner family in DeNiro is notable for rideability, specifically Absatz.

If he has any offspring that are difficult in temperament, it would be a rare occurrence and I think it could be very safe to say it may have come through the mare or been a result of poor handling.

I have had him in the tank forever but have been afraid… this year, bred my 13 year old mare to him… she never takes first try… she has been an every other year mare… Yes… it was a true gamble but what the heck.

She had large colt at side and we have a confirmed heart beat on a 1 dose breeding… I declare a miracle!!! obviously semen is good.

I am thrilled with the pregnancy and am hoping once again… (as usual) for a filly.

Which horse has Feiner Stern in its pedigree?

My trainer has had a few DeNiros to start. All were exceptionally easy and good under saddle.

We have a De Niro mare in our barn and she is easy in every way. She is a career broodmare but her MPT in Germany gave her good scores for rideability, character and temperament. I’d take 5 more just like her in an heartbeat.

well I appreciate the feedback. I was so happy with my pregnancy and then my bubble was burst with the rumor about not being an easy ride. phew… still excited.

Feiner stern is on the damline of a Deniro that reportedly is not an easy ride.

Oh heck. If you ask enough people, you can have your bubble burst again and again for naught. Keep the faith and don’t worry. Be happy.

pfft people will say anything about any bloodline and so much of it has to do with the mare and/or poor handling rather than the poor stallion. This is how reputations are made. Many of them false.

De Niro is such a great stallion that for the most part he has defied any bad reputation. I love him. Especially mixed with Weltmeyer. It’s a classic cross. I’m considering him for my Alabaster mare actually, would be interesting to have the double cross to Akzent II/Absatz …

De Niro is arguably THE most successful Donnerhall son- above Don Schufro, Don Frederico, Don Primero etc.

Deniro ----> Delaurentis

I know Delaurentis (by Deniro) is known for his own good temperament, and my Delaurentis gelding is as sweet, willing, and sensible as they come. Heck, I’m excited FOR you

My mare had a 2003 Deniro filly. She is now doing PSG with her amature owner and did well at regional championships. Nice nice mare.

They can be bigger bodied. And they can be somewhat lax in their pasterns. Not bad but something to watch for.

Based on what I’ve seen some can be small some can be big.

My De Niro is a cuddle bunny and very easy to work with. He has always had a good work ethic, and is very good under saddle. He is comfortable to sit and is a real trier and eager to please. He can lean on the bridle, esp. during downward transitions, but he was ridden in draw reins for several years, so that may have contributed to the issue. We never put draw reins on him now, and he is learning to go off the rider’s seat and hold himself up. The trainer loves him - she has around 16-18 horses there in training, and she says my DN is among her top 4 favorites.

Canters on the De Niros can be less than stellar, and they can be a bit stiff in the topline, so that is something to consider when selecting mares for him. His production record is hard to beat though - there are a BUNCH of De Niro offspring at international GP, and he is also showing up as damsire on a lot of really nice horses. This is one of the rare stallions that can sire premium foals, exceptional broodmares, approved stallion sons, as well as wonderful amateur horses AND top international horses for professionals.

This!!!

It will be a great cross Cheryl! Fingers crossed for a healthy DeNiro FILLY!!!

During the breeders orientation class, I talked to Dr. Christman about DeNiro. Dr. Christman thought that DeNiro would turn out to be even more important than Weltmeyer. That is saying something, considering Weltmeyer’s success.
