Detanglers - Calm Coat vs. Show Sheen and the like!

I am always hunting for the best detangler/coat spray to both condition and repel dirt! I have tried MANY brands out there, and so far here’s my feedback on them…

Show Sheen/Laser Sheen - They work temporarily but seem very drying to the hair so they aren’t my favorite. I’ve also found they don’t seem to last very long.

Cowboy Magic Detangler - I like this for manes/tails BUT it also dries them out after not long. I actually use Biosilk serum (people product) in her mane and tail and it works similarly but without drying!

Calm Coat Detangler and Shine - Now, I LOVE this stuff!! It works better and for longer than the Show Sheen/Laser Sheen, AND it doesn’t seem to dry out her hair either!

BUT here’s where my question comes in…I thought that the silicone ingredients in Show Sheen, Cowboy Magic, and Laser Sheen was what was drying about them, but after hunting around I finally found the ingredient list for the Calm Coat and it has “Silicone Emulsion” in it. But it doesn’t seem to dry her coat out like the Show Sheen does! Anyone happen to know why/know the difference?

No, but we use Vetrolin detangler, silicone based also and it has worked wonders in our horses.

Just one more option.

Yeah, I forgot to add that one to my list - I’ve tried it as well and found it’s similar to Laser Sheen…it works alright but is drying.

No idea.

I’ve had great success using Healthy Hair Care

I’ve heard of that brand but haven’t tried it yet! Does it do a good job with repelling dirt too?

Also, what types did you try? Because I bought the lanolin concentrate once and I didn’t like it…it gunked up her tail and didn’t do anything to repel dirt. It was this stuff that I tried: http://www.sstack.com/product/Healthy-Hair-Moisturizer-128-Oz/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=paid_search&utm_campaign=paid_search_google_pla&scid=scplp518340&sc_intid=02035&gclid=CIDRq7jepc4CFYY0aQodL4gPyA

I use Vetrolin shine, but only once every two weeks or so.

Haven’t found it to be overly drying when used a couple times a month.

I should probably just list all the other stuff I’ve tried and didn’t like

Works alright for detangling but not repelling dirt:
Canter Mane and Tail
Mane N Tail detangler
Infusium 23 (the people product)
Eqyss products

Repels dirt but too drying on the hair:
Cowboy Magic
Show Sheen
Laser Sheen
Vetrolin Shine

Builds up in the hair and makes it messy:
Healthy Hair lanolin concentrate (and yes, I mixed it correctly)
Ponytail Ready to Roll spray

I know I’ve tried others, but I can’t remember them all! I’m always on the hunt for the trifecta - detangles, repels dirt, and conditions!

I don’t think Vetrolin Shine is drying at all. It’s my favorite.

EQyss detangler I find to be a little better for moisturizing the mane and tail roots, but it is not as long lasting in the detangling department and does not repel dirt.

I’ve been using human argan oil treatment. I got a small bottle of the Organix brand for $8 from the drug store. Makes the mane and tail really soft and detangles at the same time.

To detangle tails: coconut oil. Buy it at the grocery store.

It actually does not attract bugs or ants or flies, which was my fear.

I rinse it out, but you can leave a small amount in the tail hair.

I’ve also used human hair conditioners and rinsed those out.

I’m a fan of the E3 products- they have vitamins and argan oil in many products.http://www.elitehorseproducts.com/products/14-detangles-shines.html

UltraCruz Equine Detangler or UltraCruz Equine Polish

I just started using Ultra Magic Detangler and LOVE it. It makes their mane SO soft and doesn’t seem as greasy or attract dirt like many others.

Absorbine Santa Fe used to have a detangler that I loved, but it seems they’ve discontinued it.

I also like Canter Silk, I guess now it’s called Canter Mane and Tail conditioner, by Carr & Day & Martin.

unless you’re drenching the horse 24/7 in spray, i wouldn’t worry about the silicone in any spray.

another vote of confidence for Vetrolin - I love all of their stuff.

i really like Effax’s ‘Super-Star’ Shine:

It smells lovely unlike the window-cleaner smell I get from Showsheen, and I’ve noticed it makes them slick but not slippery.

Canter Mane & Tail is the top one I’ve run across!

Dreamcoat is my hands down absolute favourite. Amazing for the body to repel dirt, does not build up and smells divine. The detangling properties are not quite enough for my horses tail (super thick), I use cowboy magic there every couple of weeks to help brush it out.

Dreamcoat does make a mane & tail version but I have not had a chance to try it.

I feel like Show Sheen smells better than it used to fifteen or twenty years ago. Vetrolin Shine is my favorite, though. I use it once or twice a week and don’t find it particularly drying.

Shown sheen gave Cloudy and Callie that funny stuff on their hind legs. So I quit that the first summer that I owned them.

I use chia seeds from getchia to give my horses omega3s. I would use the Buckeye omega product but it made C&C blow up with fat within a few weeks.

Hattie is even more of an easy keeper than Callie was. So she and Cloudy get their getchia seeds daily.

I like this, It is available in most drug stores and Target.
