buy the tractor supply brand called Schmidt. they are just as nice, and in my opinion even nicer and very very durable and quite warm. they are about $30.00 cheaper.
I also find carhartts rather stiff & bulkyā¦years ago I purchased a used snowmobile suit on Ebay which really works for me. Very wind resistantā¦zippers on legs and all the way down the front, easy to wash and cheap!
I have a Carhartt jacket that I bought this year, as this is my first real winter. I got the traditional jacket in black for $89. Itās SO worth it!! I couldnāt have survived these past few weeks without it!
I bought the Carhart uninsulated bib overalls in the shortest length I could find (still have to roll them up once). I pull these on over my jeans, then pull a fleece pullover on and top with my Aussie oilskin jacket. I love this combination, as it keeps me warm and dry, even in very cold wind or rain. I have only had the Aussie oilskin for a few months, although I have wanted one for decades. I wish I had broke down and bought one years ago, as they are incredible.
I used to have Carhart insulated coveralls for winters in Michigan, and they were fantastic. We had one set for several people, so that was motivation to get dressed for outside chores first!
the bulky/stiffness of the carhartts goes away after a little bit of wearing them.
LOVE my Carhartts! Actually, just got in from spending all morning at the barn doing chores in temps in the teens/single digits wearing my heavyweight lined black Cahartt overalls.
They keep me super warm in any cold weather. My mom bought them for me back in 2002, and they are still going strong, even after many winters in the barn. Very worth the price!
I have the Carhartt womenās coat, and love it. Itās not even just a barn coat anymore, I wear it all winter long. Itās the only think that TRULY blocks the wind, so I find I donāt have to wear as many layers underneath. And it wears like iron obviously, itās a few years old now and looks brand new still.
Loved my Carhartt vest that lasted 15 years until it finally got a tear. Think I may go for the coveralls next, now that Iām old enough not to give a hoot what folks think I look in 'em!
Love Carhartt!
I love my bibs. Not sure I could deal with the coveralls, but the bibs are wonderful⦠Iāll even ride in them. Iāve also got several coats and vests, of course.
I have the Carhartt insulated bibs and insulated winter gloves. (and a lined hoodie zip up that works fine most of the year too) I donāt have their barn jacket, but am considering one. I have 2 barn jackets, older, beat up but work fine. Maybe this winter Iāll finally break down and get myself the Carhartt jacket to match the bibsā¦so I can be more fashionable.
So they have socks? Do tellā¦didnāt know that!
Do they make socks in small sizes? The āsize rangeā styles donāt work so well for me because the heel part ends up halfway up the back of my calf.
I bought a Schmidt coat and absolutely love it. Itās the warmest coat I have ever owned. Afterwards I went and looked at the coveralls but TSC didnāt have something to fit me. I think I would have to order them to get them short enough. I sure wish I had some this past week!!!
We love them, would have a hard time working outside without them. Husband has a very old pair, fully insulated overalls. I had to special order when the kids were small, but they had the overalls to wear. Snow pants just canāt take the abrasion of farm chores, shred quickly. They got progressively larger sizes as they grew. DD was wearing sonās last pair before he reached adult size just recently. However we found a SALE last week and she wanted the PURPLE overalls. I think they are Berne. Loves them. Hard choice between Carhartt baby blue and purple, but I said I wasnāt washing them every week, so purple it was. Has the Carhartt sweater type jacket over. Below shows her with overalls and her Christmas present, Dutch Belted calf.

You need to try the ovealls on, see what fits best. They do come in short, regular and longs.
I could not wear the Schmidts, bib came up and hit my chin! Fit nice till I bent over. They have a different bib cut up around to body that is nice and warm, but even with my bib shortened, just didnāt work Body length was too long for the sizing, which I needed for leg length. Gave them to my taller brother, unshortened the bib and he wears them all the time. Says they fit great keep him warm and he is outside all the time in winter.
Carhartts fit me fine, no bib problem even with adjusted short straps to prevent the dreaded ādroopy drawersā. Mine are fully insulated, in mens sizing. New lines for ladies, which many say are better shaped for females. Some pretty new colors, but baby pink just hits me wrong as barn wear with all the dirt I get on my clothing.
I always wash them a couple times before daily wearing of new ones. Hang to dry, prevents shrinking of cotton material and extends the long life more. Washing does take a lot of the stiffness out, so wash more often if they bug you.
Husband hates when he has to break in new coats, says everyone (farmer, outside workers) KNOWS he is āa rookie just wearing the clothesā if his Carhartts are not badly faded!! But he has to get a clean one for his job almost daily, he gets very dirty. So he has several going every week that get weekly washing. He is really hard on the jackets, so they donāt last as long as the overalls. Outside workers around here could not survive without their Carhartts in winter.

Thinking about a pair of carhartts for the barn, do you wear them? Why or why not?[/QUOTE]Heck yes.
Lets see, I have two pairs of insulated coveralls (with detachable arms courtesy of my mother in law and her fancypants sewing machine) two pairs of the insulated bib overalls, and numerous jackets.
I get dirty and cold at work so I like to have a spare pair in the truck, a pair in the wash, and a pair on me.
Of course, horse people donāt usually like their vet showing up in carhartts so I tend to only wear them on cattle calls but Iām 75% cattle practice so it works out.
YES!
I have a carhartt jacket that i live in all winter long. they are so easy to maintain- and can take a beating. Its going on 4 years now, and looks the same as when I bought it. The only thing i donāt like is riding in it- too bulky.
my barn manager just got the schmidt brand overall type things from our Dels Farm Supply (owned by TSC)- she LOVES them & encouraged me to get some. I have not yet, but they are cheaper than carhartt so if i take the plunge, iāll go there first.
Mine are PINK!
I donāt need to use the insulated overalls much here in Texas, but the last few days they have been a life saver. Warm, warm and the overalls are easier to move around in. My friend in KS wears hers riding!
Rodās Western Wear had the pink ones @$60. Spendy, but much cuter than the puke yellow/brown color!
I have a full body suit- could be Carrhart, but Iām too lazy to go downstairs and check the tag! Iāll be putting it on over a couple of layers in a little while to head to the barn and ride. High of 32 today. I do feel like the Michelin man when wearing it, but it keeps me warm!
Got it on sale at the feed store at the end of winter some years back. Have another couple of camo suits that I share w/ hubby, that I have used for decades. Very useful for foxhunting, put 'em on over your hunting clothes and it keeps everything clean til you are ready to get on.

I have got to show my husband this!
His Carhartt jacket was getting really worn so we got him a new one last year. But he wears it to the office and still does chores in his old one!! We call the new one his "Sunday-go-to-meetinā " Carhartt.
I have 2 Carhartt coats, one that fits like a normal jacket and a huge one that I keep a wool hunting shirt inside. My coveralls are Schmidts because they fit me better but I like them just as much as the Carhartts.
Wardrobe by Carhartt
Iāve got a grey Carhartt barn coat that Iāve worn for 10 winters now. Itās a bit longer than waist-length, comes down to a little past the pockets on my jeans. Itās a little frayed around the sleeve cuffs but otherwise, great!
I also have a ādressā royal blue nylon shell Carhartt waist-length jacket that I wear for riding and going to the feed store, etc. Shorter length makes it more comfortable for riding. Iāve had that one about 5 years, looks brand new.
Lastly, I have a set of brown Carhartt coveralls that I use when Iām plowing snow with the tractor, or using the snowblower in a storm. Iāve had those a LONG time. A little too bulky around the barn, and much too bulky for riding, but for their designated purposeā¦theyāre great!
Mr Jeano and I got the hooded sweatshirt type carrhart jackets years ago and he wore his out, replaced it and I am jealous because now they have handy inside pockets. They are kinda water resitant, hay doesnt stick to them, and they are warm and windproof. I cant justify the bibs or insulated coveralls for the few days a year Iād wear them here in GA (well, most years. This year seems to be the exception.) If I lose some weight Iād love to get some of the jeans, nothing wrong with good tough canvas pants.
I hate hate hate the carhartt jacket I have. HATE IT. Iām 5ā2 with a meduim build and I get cold really really easily.
I have the warmest lining you can get, the one thatās cut so it covers your butt.
I literally have to put long underwear, lopng sleave t-shirt, polar fleece sweatshirt, a normal sweatshirt and a down vest on to even think about being warm for a little while.
The weight makes my back hurt.
I will never buy another cawrhartt jacket. Ever. Iām not normally one to complain.
On the otherhand, I really really like my carhartt bibs. Winter riding britches and the Bibs are so warm.
Those combined with my Hot Pink Plaid Columbia Snowboarding coat = Warmth. (along with several underlayes and thin down vest, depending on the cold, wind, chill)
I live is Southwestern Ohio⦠So it doesnāt even get That Cold here⦠but it does.
