Does anyone else make this sort of hay thing?

I’m looking for a way to contain loose hay in a stall that is not a net & takes up little to no floor space. This thing looked perfect:

But it’s backordered through April.

Has anyone seen something similar out there? I wasn’t able to turn anything up.

Or have other ideas?

I have seen these online but pffft, they don’t ship to the US https://www.nosebagz.co.uk/product-page/Hayfeeder

Maybe there is a distributor over here though.

I have also seen it done with a rubber ring mat https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/205265695495125744/

Love that first one! Exactly what I need. Wish they shipped here.

Any other time I’d be all about DYI-ing it, but just really need a ready made solution this time.

Thank you for the ideas!

Isn’t that about the same as the ones that go in a trailer? Like this https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/professional-choice-trailer-corner-feeder-1684

Unfortunately, the trailer bags are much smaller. I’m looking for something that can hold more hay.

What about this one?

I really considered it, but I was worried about my horse putting his front feet to stand in it and getting stuck or ripping it off the wall, so I ended up with a Portagrazer - I love, love, love that thing and it can travel with the horse to a show or a new barn.

I saw that, too! It looks neat but I really don’t want to take up floor space. Your concerns about it are also really valid.

I also thought about a porta grazer–I’ve eyeballed them for so long!–but still have the floor space issue & I’m really trying to give the horse totally free access to hay without restriction. I just need something to keep her from walking it all over the stall.

Tarp? Old blanket?

Yeah, I thought about it. This time I just really need a ready made solution that I can install easily & not worry about. Normally I’d be all about getting creative, or tracking down a company to fabricate something.

It looks like this is just novel enough to be unique to Schneider’s, at least in the US, which is a bummer! I’ll probably just keep raking hay back into a pile and grumbling about the stuff she ruins :stuck_out_tongue:

I really appreciate all the ideas!

So for my older horse who I can trust with hay nets…I use a 4" hole hay net from SmartPak on a Hay Chix free up feeder. It doesn’t slow him down much and he doesn’t waste all that much hay (still some waste, which I toss over the stall wall to another horse). I used my own hardware to install the Hay Chix rectangular hay hoop using large carabiners and O-rings - I like to be able to easily remove the hoop and replace the hay net if needed.

We use hay hoops from Big Dee’s. If the hay net is too long, we zip tie it at the bottom and cut the excess off.

This is the only one I could find.

I have used these in the past: High Country Plastics Corner Feeder. Worked great to keep my messy warmblood from dragging hay all over. Added benefit was I could mount it just a little higher and that kept my mini mule (his companion) from eating too much out of it. It didn’t take up much floor space as it is kind of tapered toward the bottom. Not mesh, so you do have to clean out the dust and stuff that falls in the bottom. I was able to buy from my local farm store so didn’t have to deal with shipping, which would be spendy.

I don’t see how it would prevent waste. My horses would just grab a mouthful, and let it fall onto the floor as they ate.

Could you get somebody with a heavy duty sewing machine to make one for you out of shadecloth? (Like the corner feeder in the Schneider’s link)

I did think about this and even had an old style hay net hung up for a day, but this horse has a lot going on and I just can’t risk more catastrophy with the chance she’ll put her foot through it.

Oh, that’s really interesting!!! I wish it were bigger, one of the comments says it only holds two flakes. But definitely something to consider. Thx!

Hmm. I want to avoid taking up floor space but maybe something like this could work. Do you happen to have any pics of it in a stall? It’s so tough to get any idea of scale.

I couldn’t find any of it in a stall, but did find one from when it was installed on the overhang area. We were getting ready to put in hoof-grid so I took “before” photos. The area shown is about 10’x12’. The feeder is up high because at that time, it wasn’t being used for hay (we were doing hay nets as I had to soak hay for my then-laminitic guy) but was his “toy box” where I kept all the jolly balls and such he had in his paddock. Gave him something to do, hunting through it.

I haven’t uploaded a photo since the new software change, so we’ll see if this works. :crossed_fingers:

Looks like it would be fairly easy to make your own? I am not " handy" like that but someone who is sure could.

Might not even need anyone who sews. Just get a sturdy grade of shadecloth, cut it larger around than needed, roll the edges under to give it thickness and strength, then just nail it to the wall through the rolled edges.

@horsepoor thank you so much for the pic! That’s really helpful. I’ll check in with my feed store about cost and give it some thought. It’s a little different than what I had in mind but might do what I need.
