Have been thinking about changing my dogs (a cavalier king charles and a maltese) diet for quite some time now. The cavalier has been munching on grass lately and I’m wondering if she’s not getting enough fiber or nutrients from her food. Both dogs are currently on Wellness Core Original.
Any suggestions? Are you happy with your dog food?

My Border Collie is allergic to just about everything so I am kind of limited to what dog food he can have. He is allergic to chicken which make it really hard because almost all dog foods have chicken or chicken by-products.
We have been feeding him AvoDerm (beef flavor) and he looks great on it. His coat is shiney and he is very healthy.
I switched to Taste of the Wild in January and have been very happy with it so far!
I was feeding Eukanuba before and while the TOTW bags cost more, I don’t have to feed as much food to maintain my dog’s weight, so in the long run it’s not actually costing me anymore.
FWIW, my dog was having some problems with not enough fiber too and my vet suggested adding some green beans to his diet. He get half a can per meal at breakfast and dinner and he loves them.
My Doberman is eating Wellness Core original, plus whatever veggies I’ve got around in the house.
He’s been doing really well, especially for a senior, large breed dog. The vet and I couldn’t be happier with his body condition. Though now that you mention it he has been going after grass this past week… I think that is just because we finally have grass after our crazy long winter!
Cannidae, the chicken meal and rice formula. I like the ingredients and being a college student I can’t justify buying some of the other pet store quality foods.
Solid Gold senior/weight management… when we first adopted my dog, she was 21 lbs (miniature dachshund) and her coat and skin were a mess. With the Solid Gold and actual exercise, she slimmed down to 14 lbs and her coat is silky and pretty…
I’ve got all my Cavaliers on Nature’s Recipe Grain-Free Salmon & Sweet Potato. They look wonderful on it.
Taste Of The Wild, though I’m thinking of switching it soon. Nothing wrong with it, but I’ve got itchy fingers to try another brand (probably Canidae, which he’s eaten before). Plus, and this is SUCH a little thing, but Jake used to have the absolute perfect poops, which would come out kind of pale and yellow and itty bitty, and they would dry out so that if you stepped on it, it would just crumble into dust (those kinds of poops mean the dog is getting absolutely everything from the food, so that pretty much nothing is left over for poop). Jake doesn’t have that on TOTW.

Taste of the Wild, 3yrs and going strong. We adopted our Pittie from the shelter with barely any hair and experimented with a lot of foods before we went grain free and she has never looked better. All 3 of mine LOVE it, drooling at feeding time love it and all of them look fantastic. I constantly am getting compliments on how beautiful their coats are and how fit they look.

Lab looks nice on it, not ungodly expensive, and he cleans it up well.
Have thought about trying TOTW, but haven’t yet. I like supporting a family owned company like Fromm though.
My old guy with cancer is on Evo because it has the highest protein of the grain free foods. He was diagnoses a year ago, and given 1-2 months to live. The only change I made was putting him on Evo, and after one year, he’s not only still alive, but he has more weight on him than he EVER has, his coat is nicer than it’s ever been, and he has so much energy he’s driving me insane. The down side to Evo is that it’s rediculously expensive…
The other dogs are on Canidae. I’d prefer to have them all on grain free, but I just can’t afford that. So, Canidae’s regular adult is what they get. They look good, have plenty of energy, and no intestinal issues.
I tried to get the cats on Evo, but they wouldn’t eat it. Actually, they won’t eat any of the higher end foods. So, they eat Friskies. I cringe every time I open a can, but cats can’t always be reasoned with. And they are more destructive than three large dogs when they are hungry.
TOTW. My dog loves it and she looks great on it. Plus a $25 bag lasts her 5 months, so I really can’t complain about the price.
My 3 year old boxer eats Orijen, usually the 6-fish flavor. It’s expensive, but he eats about 2.5 cups a day and weighs a trim 88 lbs (can see 2 ribs).
The crazy kitten eats Weruva canned and Orijen dry food.

Big fuzzy dog is on Nature’s Variety Prairie. Small fat corgi is on Wellness Core Reduced Fat. Both do very well on the respective foods. I also cook a big batch of ground turkey and chicken livers each week, and add a couple tablespoons of the burger/liver to their food for something more interesting. Fat corgi also gets frozen chopped green beans in the morning and a tablespoon of canned pumpkin at dinner.
Edit: And both of them have been grazing on the new grass like ponies. They love the new spring grass! I don’t think it has anything to do with them missing nutrients; they just like it.

Newman’s Advanced kibble with a little of their canned food mixed in. Two basenjis, 9 and 10, are doing great. It cleared up our girl’s red tummy in a week. Their coats are wonderful. I get it from SmartPak.
Taste of the Wild Sierra Mountain Lamb. I switched from Diamond Naturals Lamb & Rice and am really happy with it. Pricier, but like Lone said, I feed far less and they look WAY better.
TotW after lots of experimenting
I also use Taste of the Wild for the past 6 months of so. Was using Nutramax before after lots of experimenting with my allergy boy. Higher quality foods mentioned did not sit well but Nutramax worked though I wasn’t thrilled with the top 5 ingredients. Noticed him scratching again after years of Nutramax so I went back to research and tried Taste of the Wild salmon. Success!
My guys are also grazing like ponies on clover. I think it’s just the new growth yumminess. I let them have a little before dragging them away. Have had no GI issues from a little grazing.
