Dog Show time!

well here we are again, first week of February, and looking for the dog show. I am looking on the internet, and see the agility, which will be on Saturday, broadcast on Sunday on Fox regular channel. But I cannot find the Big Show. Any ideas? I know the dog lovers will know where it will be.

The breed judging and TV coverage is next week, Monday and Tuesday the 11th and 12th.

Supposedly we get a live stream for agility last year. Westminster dropped the ball last year on that one. Somehow, I keep seeing things saying it starts on the 11th, yet it starts on the 9th. I wasn’t eligible but I’m the co-breeder on two dogs entered and own the sire of a third.

well, I think we can live stream on line can we not? I tried doing the day classes last year, but it was difficult, and since I really know nothing about the individual breeds. The show just brings sad memories, but I cannot seem to leave it alone.

There are links to the breeds info on the Website.
Not at all user friendly, but its there.
They’ve also dropped the ball on Social Media.
Not 1 single post on their FB page yet.

Breed classes are held alllll over the Tri-State area making it impossible to be a relaxed spectator until the actual group judging at The Garden.

I could hop a train and be there in an hour but I don`t want to go by myself or be travelling alone at night.
Penn Station and my local station are where you DON’T want to be alone at night.

My former BO breeds Swissies and her juvenile bitch is showing the breed classes.

The Masters Agility Championship is being shown on FS1 (Fox Sports 1) Sunday 2/10 starting at 9:30 pm Eastern.

The show itself is on FX1 next Monday and Tuesday. It starts on FS1 Monday 2/11 starting with the “pre show” at 7:00 pm and the show starting at 7:30 pm.

@Larksmom thank you for starting this thread. I have watched the show for years but this year I hadn’t even thought about it for some reason, so I’m glad you posted this and reminded me.

Go to the WKC home page for streaming and TV coverage info: https://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/

You can livestream the breed classes online and also watch them afterwards, which is what I usually do, just to see more dogs of the various breeds.

It’s interesting to realize that sometimes there is only one dog in a breed class, that the Breed winner in the Group judging on Monday or Tuesday night is actually the only rep of its breed at the show.

For Westminster all the breeds are shown at Piers 92/94. Then groups at the Garden. Personally I’d rather see the breed judging if I was going to choose only one.

Here’s the judging program:

FOX Sports will televise a program on both Monday and Tuesday afternoons (1-4PM) on NAT GEO WILD that will include live filming of breeds exhibited in Rings 8, 9 and 10 from 1PM - 4PM and earlier taped segments of various breeds in ALL rings from 8AM-1PM.

Thanks S1969! I found this in there!

^^ I actually posted it for Irish Ei’s because she may be confusing the specialty shows over the weekend with Westminster judging. There ARE breed classes all over the tri-state area (or, at least a lot in NY) leading up to Westminster, but they are technically not part of Westminster. With that many dogs in town a lot of breed clubs hold independent shows over the weekend. Looks like a bunch at the Hilton Westchester in Rye Brook, some at the New Yorker, and some on Long Island.

If you are a fan of a specific breed and can’t make it to Westminster itself, you may be able to find a specialty (single breed) or single group show over the weekend. These are generally open to the public as well, and free. And you’ll usually see a lot of other dogs, not just the Champions entered at Westminster.

Here’s a list you can check. http://infodog.com/show/catalog.htm?../11/19&typ=SPC

Oh, this is better - a judging program for the Rye Brook show - Gordon Setters, English Setters, Irish Setters, Dachshunds, Vizslas, and Dobermans. http://www.raudogshows.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/WGS-SATURDAY-2019-JP.pdf

Can’t seem to get the toy dogs from the New Yorker to give me a judging program…maybe the site is overloaded right now.

Woot! Starts today!

Sporting breeds show tomorrow so I’ll be watching then but I’ll probably pop in on a few breeds today.

My dog’s breeder will be showing the littemate of his dam; and a bunch of my other dog show acquaintances will be there. Only a few in our breed, as usual, but it will be fun to watch. I’ve already picked who I think will win, but hoping for an upset. I like to root for the underdog. Literally.

doggone it! I wanted to see the corgis and apparently they have already gone by, so now I am watching the junior handlers.

why do some dogs pace? I saw an Aussie shepherd do it this morning. I would think that would be seriously frowned on at this level. My dog paces. Why do they do that?

It is frowned on for almost all breeds. But usually it is just that you started at the wrong speed. A dog will often pace at a speed between a walk and a trot. If you correct it quickly, though, its usually forgiven. The handler may have been nervous and didnt notice.

Some dogs with poor conformation pace more often. But almost all dogs will pace at a certain speed.

It is very unlikely to happen with dogs/handlers that show a lot because they practice.

that is interesting. I do see it almost every year, and the ones I think of most doing it are aussie shepherds, and shetland sheepdogs. My dog loos a great deal like an Aussie shep without the coat.

and for junior handler, are they judging the ids or the dogs?

They judge the kid only. Although it is a lot easier when they show a nice dog. And many of them show retired specials, so they are well trained in the show ring.

I like it when a junior goes in with a puppy. Sometimes judges will reward the kid that had to work the most. I like that. My daughter did juniors…for a while. It’s a strange competition. Sometimes I think they reward thw wrong things…or handling that would not win in the breed ring. E.g. moving your dog at the wrong speed.

Junior Showmanship is judging the handling skills of the kids. Different breeds are presently slightly differently, and individual dogs are handled to show off their best points and minimize their weak areas.

All Junior Handlers have to qualify by winning during the year preceding in order to be eligible to compete at Westminster, so all of these kids are generally accomplished handlers. Some train their own dogs, some have parents involved with dogs who let them show an already trained and finished champion, some buy dogs who are retired champions.

they all looked like they had poise and most were better turned out than the adults sometimes are.
