Dog throwing up with diarrhea and now blood

I just left my dog a the vet’s office for the weekend. He wasn’t feeling himself last night (which I thought had more to do with the 100 degree temps) and this morning around 10:00 he started throwing up, then almost immediately the diarrhea started. I kept an eye on him and checked his poop and vomit for signs of what might have made him sick (the things we do, huh?) and noticed blood…to me a significant amount. He would assume the position and he just dripped blood instead of poop. He was drinking water normally. He is a 42 pound 6 or 7 year old mutt and otherwise seemingly healthy. http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz258/dorim_2005/dogs/IMG_5056.jpg He is on comfortis and heartguard (last given last weekend). He ate his dinner last night (blue buffalo) and appeared to have a normal BM but just seemed a little depressed after dinner. The vet didn’t seem too concerned…was going to give him a shot of something for the nausea and keep him for observation. He didn’t think that he needed a bunch of expensive tests…yet

I realize it could be anything…but any ideas?

Sounds kinda like he ate something he shouldn’t have-could he have eaten something strange (to him)? Big chunk of rawhide? Bone? Stick? The blood, if red, I’ve been told, is coming from the latter end of the intestine, and comes from straining-its the blackish blood that indicates problems higher up, that is really worrisome. (Again, I’m so NOT a vet. Just my 2 coppers). Hopefully this will all pass-literally! We had a scare many ys. ago–Dummy (me) gave my Lab a big ol’ pork marrow bone, not knowing that they are very brittle when cooked…dearest dog puked and spewed vehemently for a few hrs, and then to cap off my monumental stupidity, I stuck him in the kitchen overnight without taking up the water bowl. What a lovely sea of yellow bile water I came down to, PLUS a very dehydrated doggie… Xrays showed a mass of pork bone in intestines, which we PRAYED would pass, since if not, we’d miss our own wedding! It did pass and Crash was our ring-bearer.

Hopefully you’ve heard something by now-fingers crossed for something not too bad (or expensive).

Sounds like HGE… very treatable Of course it COULD be anything (foreign body, IBD, neoplasia, pancreatitis, virus etc etc.) however symtoms that you stated scream HGE. Some cases can be treated as outpatients, but be prepared for a 2-4 day hospitalization with IV fluids, blood tracking and pain meds but generally these dogs recover very well. If he isnt better by tomorrow morning, I wouldnt dilly dally on getting your dog hydrated with IV fluids.

My dog used to get this from time to time, and always recovered. Usually she got into something like berries in the yard (I didn’t know Virginia Creeper even had berries!), and grapes or other fruit or too much rich stuff can do this too. Could your dog have counter surfed something, or maybe food disappeared mysteriously, or maybe someone slipped the dog something thinking it would be ok? Some people think it’s cute to feed junky stuff to a dog, or they could stumble on something on a walk or in the yard? And sometimes they just get a little virus that can do things too. Hope your dog recovers quickly.

What is HGE?
This dog is one of the most polite, well behaved dogs I’ve ever owned…he doesn’t counter surf and I’m pretty sure nobody slipped him anything. BUT I do have chickens and a pot bellied pig and, of course, horses. Horse poop is a particular delicasy to him which is why he isn’t allowed to just run the pasture without direct supervision. I’ve had dogs get nauseated with diarrhea before and sometimes after a day or so they would have small amounts of blood in their stool. Most of the time after treating with a little kao they were fine. The part about this that bothered me was that he threw up, had diarrhea and then blood dripping out of his butt all in less than a two hour span. That’s why he went directly to the vet immediately. I haven’t heard anything from the vet yet though…I guess no news is good news? I’ll be calling him later if I don’t hear anything by noon though.

hemorrhagic gastroenteritis!!!

Yep, its a nasty gastro enteritis. In a mild state you will get diarrhea with a few blood specks and in more severe cases, “raspberry jam poop”. Usually, they dont vomit other than initially, however the diarrhea usually lasts a little longer. Again, pretty treatable.

Pancreatitis could also cause what you described, as can a bleeding GI ulcer, a mass (neoplasia) or foreign object. Hopefully with supportive care throughout the weekend your pup will be back to normal soon. Keep us updated!

severe gastroenteritis is what I spent my $$ on after my dogs had a vacation at my friends house.

We had paint peeling gas, rumbly guts and cow patty poo with lots of mucous (sp). No blood though. He got an injection of dexmethasone, was put on metronidazole and came home with probiotics. Had to stay on a bland diet for 5-7 days as well.

it began to clear in about 36 hours, which is when I noticed an increased interest in food again.

I have no idea what caused it, could be he ate horse poop, dog poop, deer poop, someotherwildanimal poop, drank out of a nasty mud puddle, or was too stressed at being away from home or any combination.

I think it happens to a lot of dogs.

AND this is why I’m grateful to the vets in my life…they know how to fix my dogs.

Hoof trimmings can do that to some dogs.
All our dogs love hoof trimmings, no worse for the wear when they eat them, but we had a toy poodle that could not resist them and a few hours later started with the vomiting and on to those same problems.
We sure were watching her closely when there were some trimmings around.

I recieved a call from the vet just before lunch. He says that Buster did eat this morning and his poops have firmed up some. He said that he will know more this evening if he can come home. He was given sub-cu fluids and he has put him on a probiotic and antibiotics along with the anti-nausea medicine. He also said that Buster is not happy in the kennel and tries to slip past him when ever the door is opened. Buster is a great dog with people he knows…it just takes him awhile to warm up to new folks so I can imagine how uncomfortable he is amongst all the strangers. No matter if he can come home this evening or not, I’ll be seeing him…he must feel so abandonned.

Crap…vet called back and said that Buster still has dio. Dang, I guess he’s just fine as long as you don’t feed him. :(. I will go visit him this evening…poor boy.

Aw, poor Buster! He’s a cutie. No more vomiting and no blood in the poop, though, I hope?

Definitely go and visit - it’ll brighten his day for sure, though I know it will be very hard to leave him after.

My dog gets the vomiting poops every now annd again for no apparent reason. I just make sure he drinks enough, kao if he needs, and take him off the food for 24hrs, and restart him on plain poached chicken. Works every time!

Needless too say, if it lasted beyond 24hrs, to the vet!

That is my usual regimen too. But in this case he was at the vet in less than 2 hours from the first vomit because of the blood. I’ve never had a dog have blood in his stool that soon after the distress began. Normally a small amount of blood after 24 hours…ok but what I saw wasn’t small and…it was very worrisome. This first happened Saturday morning and he is still at the vet and will remain there at least another night.
