Thanks Daventry big sigh of relief for all the horses that their are people involved now that will see to it they are properly cared for.
Daventry, perhaps make your news/update a separate thread so that as many people as possible that have mares or foals at GFF get the notice and know who to contact.
Wow! Hopefully an good end is in sight for the horses!! Do we know which stallion was seized? I think someone mentioned earlier in the year that Romantic Star looked a bit rough.
This is an awful lot of horses for the local population to foster. If it gets that far, I hope they find enough people to help out.

They could even hold a sale (they are livestock after all) and could require that the potential buyers pay for a background check before being allowed to take possession.
How it was explained to me, the Humane Society is legally not allowed to sell any horses, hold an auction, etc. They can only be adopted them out. That was even after discussing the value of some of them. I was told they did not have the legal authority to do so, only adopt out. Too bad, if they were resold, at least the Humane Society would be able to cover the costs of some of their veterinary bills, feed, etc. after this is all over. That being said, wouldn’t it be nice if Jill stepped forward, agreed to comply and clean up her act, put them all up for sale herself and be able to pay off her own bills.
I know, easier said than done, but one can always dream.
Then I hope they will work out some way to allow adoptions outside of the local area. I’m certain that most people would be willing to pay the costs involved in doing a background investigation.

Here is a statement from the Humane Society:
“Animals can be adopted to anyone in any state with the right credentials and references. Animals cannot go into FOSTER care outside the state. This is a big difference.”
Sorry, got my wires crossed. It should also be noted that adoption is only a “what if”. At this point, everything is just under investigation.
Thanks for the clarification.

Thank god there’s an end in sight. The image of a pile of dead foals will never leave me.
No, I don’t want to see it, but are you serious??? And nothing was done then???
I’m so happy something is being done.
How many horses are we talking about here?
None of us really know. Estimates range from 40-70 - with it being said that some are being stashed somewhere besides this particular property.
I just hope the rightful owners of any of the leased/borrowed mares are able to reclaim their horses. Its a very sad situation for the animals.
Is the Marin Humane society accepting donations to help with these horses specifically?

YES! Currently, you can donate directly to the Marin Humane Society here: https://www.kintera.org/site/c.aiIOI3NLKgKYF/b.7653339/k.8C28/Make_a_Gift/apps/ka/sd/donor.asp?c=aiIOI3NLKgKYF&b=7653339&en=4nKxFFPfH3LGIPOiH2JDKMMtGnLRJSNpHgLMJQNoGdJKLUOEE
I have been told a special donation page for the Burnell horses is currently being set up. As soon as it’s live on the internet, I’ll let everyone know.
What kind of time frame are they looking at to get horses placed?
I know the legal system can take a while…but what are the possibilities on both ends? As early as (_) or as late as ().
These pics (posted links on page 118 of this thread) are of Grand Affairs 2010 foal “Rain Boots” I own her 2011 foal “Rioja”. These pics are shocking and Rioja looked possibly worse when he arrived to me. But wanted to clarify.
I just hope that the Marin Human Society listens to the claims of those whose mares Jill claims as “hers” though they may or may not be, and allows them to return to their proper homes. It is a very positive sign that something is being done, though. Good on them!

Everything is up in the air, and a lot will depend on what Jill Burnell chooses to do! According to the Humane Society…one step at a time Jill Burnell has been given until January 3rd to comply with the orders laid out by the Marin Humane Society. I can only assume that would be providing adequate shelter, etc., as many posters have pointed out that their new property is just a barren parcel of land.
This ends up going before a judge in January, if I understand correctly. Obviously, an owner can choose to fight it. I have heard Jill has gotten a lawyer. Not sure how though Jill can also try and settle the investigation as well. Not sure how that works, what is involved or what the outcome is. Can only assume it just means she would promise to build shelters and better provide for the animals?!? Unfortunately, I’m not a lawyer and don’t know much information on that.
The only way the horses would end up being available for adoption is if it went to trial, which could take up to a year to finish due to having to take the time to gather evidence, witnesses, etc… If the courts found Jill Burnell guilty of animal cruelty and she is convicted, for example, from owning horses for 5 years, then the horses would go up for adoption at that time. As of right now though, everything is just alleged, as it is under investigation.
In the meantime though, if they are seized temporarily, they would end up going to temporary local foster homes until the entire thing can be sorted out.
I am VERY happy to see something finally being done.
I had a thought last night…Has anyone tried reaching out to Mr Burnell and let him know exactly what his wife is up to? I have it on good authority that he is not aware of exactly what she has been doing. Don’t want to elaborate more publicly as to why I’m asking this, but will via PM.

Yes, but at this point, does it really make a difference which one it is? I’ve been told the poor boy is laid up in an animal hospital and they are estimating his recovery vet bills will be quite a bit. Hoping he toughs it out and gets healthy again! All the more reason to donate to the Marin Humane Society

I’m sure it will come out over the next few days or weeks…as I’m not the only one that knows.

Only in that some may have experiences with some of the stallions, and be wondering who. Thank you to those who PM’ed me. I hope that many COTHers are able to donate to help care for these horses, who all deserve better.
