Yes, the temperatures are mild – but we DO get a lot of rain, and driving wind, which in my experience leaves horses shivering if they do not have shelter or proper blankets. Very different than the “dry cold” horses experience in snowy regions. Last night we had down pours, and periods of BB sized hail – not sure what weather the north bay got, but I was glad my horse had a shelter and a proper blanket to escape the hail. – Its hailing again this morning. I am 45 mins south of GGF. It may be dry there at the moment, but their region experiences more rain and cold than mine.
This morning it was 32 degrees in Petaluma.
It appears that some of the horses are being kept in small pens without access to natural shelter, and those pens WILL turn into very deep mud in no time. Those living in the pens would have no place to escape the mud. No place to lay down and rest that is not soaked. It just isn’t the proper way to keep a horse.
Do those photos really depict proper horse keeping? What about all of those buyers? Do you think THIS is what they picture their $10,000 weanling living in?

I could have gone a lifetime not knowing where they were dumping their human waste. This photo of their dogs made me absolutely cry! http://www.ratemyhorsepro.com/userfiles/images/jillpic14.png
What a horrible picture! I hope the dogs are also seized and given a chance at a happy life full of freedom and food…holy moly…Is COTH running stupidly slow for anyone else this morning? Insanely slow. I am not going to quote an above post because the page will probably time out before it loads but the point I want to make is it doesn’t really matter what weather conditions we as horse people think is ok for a horse to be without access to shelter if the local laws require shelter. You don’t get to violate the law because you think it is nice out.
^^^ I thought it was just me. Yes, COTH is VERY slow, glitchy this am.
According to the article the woman who owns Rising Star who bought all of those horses from Jill, now owns Romantic Star and Jill’s lawyer is representing her also. It bothers me extremely that such a person would support Jill Burnell in the first place and has not done anything to get Romantic Star out of there. She shipped a large load of horses out of Jill’s to her new, huge, multi million dollar (in appearance) farm on the eastern side of the country earlier in 2012. If you actually OWNED Romantic Star; why would you be leaving him in Jill’s questionable care in California when you, obviously have a lot of money and the means to have extremely nice facilities. ? None of it adds up. If I had the means to buy such a stallion, you can bet your buttons he’d be on a truck to me ASAP so I could drool over him in my own care.

^^^This! And, yes, CoTH is driving me crazy today. Just going from one page to another it’s taking 3 or 4 minutes.
Let me clarify that I do NOT believe the way Jill is keeping her horses is right. I’m appalled by it. I just didn’t state it quite right in my previous. I wholeheartedly believe the law (shelter) needs to be followed. I just don’t think the weather in the area with the lack of shelter is what should be focused on because each area will have different tolerations in terms of weather and shelter…often with just a handful of miles between. The focus here needs to be the law, the animals, and the fraud.

I don’t believe for ONE SECOND that Romantic Star was conveniently “sold” just before his seizure by the Humane Society. Especially without a single peep of this sale from either side.
Also if you were buying such an animal, would you not have some sort of vet check? How could you not know that the poor horse was in such dire straights? And how angry would you be if your new horse was attacked by another stallion AFTER you had purchased it before you brought it home? Wouldn’t you be furious at the lack of proper and safe housing for said stallion?
And if all of this was indeed true, why would you agree to use the exact same lawyer as the woman who has wronged you in a horse sale? If I bought a horse that was seized by the Humane Society after I bought it and before it shipped to me, you can bet that I would be taking severe legal action against that particular seller.
Shady, shady…
The photos are mind numbing. Regarding the bicycles - somewhere along the line it was mentioned that the husband hoards bikes and bike parts and one building on the last farm had a storage building filled with them. The hay that was visible is not protected so when it rains - I guess it just gets moldy. Those poor big dogs stuck in those crates - should be removed immediately.
She’s amazingly managed to duplicate her last “laboratory” of filth at the last farm - at this farm!
As far as the stallion owner who purports to have purchased Romantic Star. It shocks me that any stallion owner would want to move any horse - better yet a stallion from a situation like this - where there is one stallion that sheds - without a strict quarantine before shipping. I never cease to be amazed at this horror story. My heart aches for all the horses caught in this ponzi scheme gone bad.
And judging from what she has as fencing - is it any surprise that one of the stallions jumped in with another stallion?

Even I, as a backyard wannabe, keep my horses in blankets or rain sheets in these conditions, and have them either stabled or with in/out access. These are almost identical to the weather conditions in the Bflo, NY forecast for the next two days. If I said that I had my horses out with no blankets or shelter in that geographical region, I can imagine what would be said.
I do the same as you; my horses are out 24/7, blanketed and with very adequate and cozy shelters. Our night temps are due to get into the low 30’s in the next few days, and we’re on the coast.
Equilibrium questioned the reasoning behind my posting of temps for the GFF location. It was to give people an accurate reading on winter weather conditions, so they can decide for themselves if the horses need more shelter, blankets, feed, etc.

I think you maybe confused with the woman at Rising Phoenix in MO who bought a lot of horses from Jill. Unless I missed another large group being sold to someone. FYI on Rising Star’s FB page on Dec 17? it mentions news of possibly a new stallion.
So it seems by yours and other posts that you prefer the stallions to go to the humane society and “hope” that they land in a professional home rather than see someone who can do right by the stallion purchase him?
Hmmmmmm
(I do believe on her post it says she was arranging shipping, not at all strange it might take 10 days to do this)
and before you ask no I am not related to or even know Rising Star, just have seen their stallions and impressed with their operation. (this disclaimer seems needed for anyone who seems to disagree with certain posters)
Again, you can’t decide it is ok to violate the law because you think it is nice out!

Has it been figured out what the shelter laws are in that area?
for those interested, this is a weather station very close to JB’s farm - around here a few miles has pretty big differences in temp… so you can click on this and get relatively accurate conditions - normally if you look up Petaluma you will get either the Petaluma airport (very different weather) or Santa Rosa (again very different)

Exactly. Why? why? I questioned using the same lawyer right away as something very fishy… and according to her website RS is in Florida… there is internet in Florida so I am very surprised that nothing is being heard at all… I don’t buy any of that sale either… and now WHO owns the other stallions, because…
and because Coth was so slow earlier, I could not reply to the question about the statement re lying about the property. I only wondered if anyone told her the permits would be easy to get… that she could live in a trailer, etc. Remember she was kind of in a hurry to move so did not take time to check or just assumed she would push through…

Laurie, I just want to clarify that i was only addressing the concerns of two folks who seemed to be really worried about the weather. So i posted the weather and how other horses live around here…It’s not meant as an excuse etc. just facts.

again with a SO jumping on someone that would put the stallion in a better situation? Just thoroughly makes me question motive. Are you now going to post that Rising Star is not qualified to manage a stallion exposed to a shedding stallion? I don’t know of your farm summit, but are your numbers low and you don’t want competition?
these are the posts that really fry me and as SOOO many have pointed out will work out very well for Jill in trial. “see even when I tried to sell my stallions the COTH gang managed to squash the sale by frightening potential owners that the stallions will carry on the negativity i created” If you that are posting the “huff and puff” can’t see that you are blind.
I’ll go back to lurking as it’s clear MHS is on the case and there are some prominent people who want the stallions to thrive and succeed.
I wasn’t accusing. Take away the never ending rain here and this country would be Nor Cal. In this country you have to provide shelter too. However, it can be natural such as hedging. It doesn’t mean everyone has to have a fancy place. I have some hedging and if mine lived out it would be acceptable. But I can’t let horses stand in that ground 24/7. I would have them out 24/7 on better ground. In the summer they mostly live out. Dry lot during the day with a couple hours in away from the flies and back out evening. They have access to forage constantly and a mix of getting out of the elements of their choosing. But I do bring them in too. And as it never stops raining they have rugs too.
Like Laurie says, you don’t get to choose not to have shelter because its nice out.
