Dr. Betsee Parker in fur!!!!!! Disgusting.

OP, what proportion of this forum do you suspect invests in non leather tack?

It was a startling outfit for sure  , almost as bad as one of the lady presenters in a poncho and grey fatigues! But considering Dr. Parker is rumoured to have given all the prize money to the Danny and Rob dog rescue, I’d be pretty surprised to find out it was a real fur coat. More likely faux, albeit still a (IMO) bad fashion choice.

About the same proportion that gave their prize money to an animal welfare operation. To the tune of 202k.

Not to spin this thread off in a completely different direction, but if one has inherited a fur coat from a relative, what would you do with it? The animal is already dead and the coat isn’t any less useful.

Who knows whether the coat is real or faux and where she got it, but the only boutique I have ever seen that has anything to do with fur coats is focused on restyling old furs for new owners.

I thought Tori only won $52k? Plus whatever amount A Million Reasons won (maybe 3k?)

Danny and Ron’s Rescue was also the big winner in the Charity Challenge class at the previous horse show. So their total prize money for the week was something like $202,000. That will pay for a lot of dog food and vet bills!

Wow, that’s great news!

Good Lord, seriously? Yes, BP’s coat is a real sable. She has some health issues, and when she is cold that coat works the best to keep her warm. She wears it all the time in the winter. If you have never worn a real, well-made sable/mink/coyote-fur coat, you have no idea how wonderfully warm they are! Beats the heck out of any other winter coat. There is a reason people wore fur for thousands of years! I have 2 mink coats, and you will have to pry them from me in the winter…

Sell it and buy a horse.
(Or, depending on the fur, a rental property that will bring in the board bill on a horse.)

I could not watch the video of a raccoon dog being literally skinned alive for its fur. (They are dogs that look like a cross between a chow and a malamute and they are frequently mislabeled so consumers don’t realize they are wearing a dog.)
Or the video that had multiple skinned animals in a heap, still blinking and vocalizing.
I was traumatized enough by the horrified comments.

Whatever cow made my saddle was assuredly not killed like that.

What about all of the competitors in leather boots?

Touche. This was excellent.

Ooh, how do I find a place that does this? I inherited a mink coat from my grandmother and it’s way too big.

I’d wear it, be nice and warm, and think kind thoughts about Aunt Eleanor!

It was a beautiful coat and inappropriate for a horse show.

This. When you show in synthetic bridles, saddles, boots, etc then you can throw stones.

For heaven’s sakes. I really hope people never sit around judging my clothing choices. Who cares??? I think I actually trust my fellow humans to care about more important things than my coat…

I am with meupatdoes, and I haven’t seen the videos she mentions, thank goodness.

Wearing fur says something about your beliefs, and I have a strongly held belief that I won’t do something that causes an animal unnecessary suffering. Yes, I wear leather, but the rest of that animal was used. With fur, the only reason the animal was killed was for its fur. I can live with other ways to stay warm in the winter

Along these lines I try very hard not to eat factory-farmed animals. I live in a rural area so can get local beef and pork (some of the cows are on my farm, in a leased field).

Everybody has different beliefs, and I am not saying that mine are the only way to be. But I would never, ever wear fur.

SMF, sheep have wonderfully fluffy coats, are very edible and can live out healthy lives in green fields. No reason not to wear their fur - YES you can  if you care to.

I am fully with you about factory farmed animals.

How were the chickens that made your morning eggs raised, how were the cows that made milk for your cheese kept, and what happened to their calf, and don’t even get me started on goat milk, those poor little billy goats are worthless ( can buy them for 50 CENTS each, not per pound when in season, cheaper then easter chicks!)?

I can not imagine why the animal would need to be skinned alive. Having skinned animals, it is not a one minute job, it takes a while. Aside from the cruelty aspect, it has to be much harder to do with a moving screeching beast. I can not imagine that is a commercially viable option. If it is, that is completely utterly wrong - IF!

I really get the point about leather everything about horses. Face it, most of us adore quality REAL leather.

Glass houses and stones…

I inherited a mink stole from my grandmother. I can’t imagine wearing it, but only because I wouldn’t feel like me in something that fancy.

Yes…I’d be really surprised if this was a real practice rather than something done to prove a point. Why skin animals when they are alive? Aside from how cruel it is, there are teeth and claws and stuff to contend with.

OP, there is a great discussion going on this on the OTHER forum.
