Dr. Betsee Parker in fur!!!!!! Disgusting.

Anyone who says they saw that get up on Saturday and wished they could be as stylish as the good “doctor” is lying. Every one of us gasped in embarrassment for her.

I really don’t care about the fur thing. I have fur on my winter coat. Meh on that one.

I don’t know Betsee Parker either, but think she looks gorgeous in those photos-- and the coat is unquestionably a work of art.
People’s taste in art is, of course, highly subjective.

Honestly guys - all this fashion criticism is bugging me a bit. Just seems a bit petty to be calling someone out for fashion choices different from what we might choose for ourselves.

I say this as someone who has always dressed in my own way, and who has been repeatedly stunned by people’s suggestions that I could be “so pretty” if I’d just wear more make up or spend more money on clothes. I mean, seriously?

I don’t know Betsee Parker at all, but I do know that she donates a lot of money to charity, and makes a point of retiring her old show horses instead of throwing them away. To me, that’s what’s important. Not how she likes to dress.
This times a thousand.

Sounds like you were there.

Would you say this to her in person?

Probably not, because that would be rude. Why, then, isn’t it rude to post comments like this on a public forum?

Oh fur goodness sake, what a lotta fuss and flyin feathers over nuthin.

Someone would hava fit if’n she wore a bikini.

Wait, wait. Someone is upset that a woman who owns horses who participate in a sport that is ostensibly based on the hunting of animals who are made into fur coats, is wearing a fur coat as her horse is being presented with an award for said sport? That’s an interesting perspective.

LHU, “Dr” Parker’s doctorate isn’t in divinity. Her Reverend is an MDiv from Harvard, a perfectly honorable and prestigious degree. The “doctorate” is an honorary one from SUNY:

Thanks for posting the links to the photos - the one with the groom is the most telling - she’s donned in full length fur w/ a white hat() and the groom is there w/ a short sleeved polo and shorts… go figya. I’m not gong to say anything about the styling suffice to say that an afternoon with Stacey London might help

So much of what’s being said is so hateful. Why is it appropriate to critique anyone publicly that way?

A lot of it is jealousy I think. The women is nice, genuine and charitable. On the outside she looks like the perfect human being with a perfect life. So some people need to latch onto something “out of whack” and completely tear her down.

you know sort of like “OMG see she’s NOT perfect! Ha told you so!” No matter how miniscule.

Um. When Lillie won the Maclay and they called for her mother to come out and partake in the picture-taking, Pam was wearing a full-on Old-Skool mink. Don’t remember any hue/cry about that.
That being said, everyone defending the wearing of fur because it’s warmer make me laugh. I don’t recall seeing climbers on Mt. Everest wearing a mink coat. I think it gets pretty cold up there.

The difference between the cost of a mink coat and a down coat is substantial. The down coat will keep you just as warm, if not warmer. I think wearing fur is a statement by the wearer that says “see, I can afford a mink coat.” Nothing wrong with that, though. Just be honest about it.
Also Florida =/= Mt. Everest.

When there are PALM TREES in a photo, perhaps we could give the whole, “But in Sibeeeriiaaaaaa” argument a rest.

A lot of threads on COTH turn very rude, very quickly unfortunately. It’s sad.

On a different note (not related to what you said)
Betsee does a lot for the equestrian community which I think is great. I don’t care what she wears.

Personally, although I would love to have as much money as she does, I wouldn’t want her health issues.

You know what I see when I look at that photo? A really nice horse. What the hell is wrong with the lot of you?

Someone related this thread to the view of hunters as a dissuasively elitist sport. I don’t think it has anything to do with it. I went to a private girls’ school, showed the As for years… And I’ve still never seen such a dense gathering of acrid jerks in my life. Congratulations, you should feel very happy with the depth of your characters.

Indeed, it’s important to mention - do you think she’s illiterate? Would you honestly want anyone to read about themselves the type of vitriol written on this thread? I live in a different country, so perhaps I’m unaccustomed to your cultural practices down there… Is tearing people to shreds a sport for many Americans? :disgust:

There is a lot of snark and nastiness on COTH. There are also a lot of very nice, very well meaning people.

I’m on a lot of boards and this one has by far the most trouble with rudeness. Interestingly, the ones where it’s mostly men, the people there don’t take themselves so seriously. People don’t get in nasty arguments. They may disagree, but threads don’t go on for pages and pages and get derailed like they do here.

Definitely ulcers.
Lord I needed this.

I thought it was a beautiful coat (the fur controversy aside) but it wasn’t well tailored for her. A darker (brown) felted cowboy hat would have pulled the look together better. The look definitely could have worked…jeans and boots, etc.

I find it funny that no one commented on the fact that Lilli’s mom wore a full length mink.

I have a mink…given to me by my mom. It is out of style but it is warm warm warm!! She gave it to me after my kidney transplant so I could be warmer while I started to walk my dogs again and do short stints at the barn while recovering.I love the darn thing, but I rarely wear it unless I am going somewhere where I am certain other people will be wearing fur, or at least have the class to not throw red paint at me

Not always and in all respects. There are such things as educated and uneducated tastes, people who do and do not, for example, understand and appreciate principles of design, technique, etc. The cut and arrangement of pelts on that coat is quite wonderful.

I also have a mink, inherited from my mother. It’s not my thing, so I’ve never worn it. But my mother told me on her deathbed that if I sold it, she’d come back and haunt me–and while I don’t believe in ghosts, God or the hereafter, I do believe that if it’s possible, my mother would surely find a way. So I dutifully pay the cold storage fee every year. Good thing I’ve never shown up at a horse show in the dang thing.

You must not be on the iDig Gardening forum . The political nastiness is so bad over there I rarely visit even for gardening topics anymore. Those men put CoTH in the dust.

I don’t get it. Horse shows, horse races, etc., are not exactly events with dress codes, nor are win pictures moments for which anyone (aside from the presenters, perhaps) specifically dress up. People are invited “come as you are–now.” So an owner (especially one suffering from acute cold sensitivity) might well show up in a fur coat, while a groom arrives in short sleeves and pants. This is supposed to be an impromptu celebration, not a fashion-show.

IMO, this entire thread makes Betsee Parker’s critics look “disgusting,” not her.
