Dr. Betsee Parker in fur!!!!!! Disgusting.

Not always and in all respects. There are such things as educated and uneducated tastes, people who do and do not, for example, understand and appreciate principles of design, technique, etc. The cut and arrangement of pelts on that coat is quite wonderful.
I guess it’s just because I’m such a philistine that I have trouble equating a fur coat with the Venus de Milo. I also like Big Macs.

Also Florida =/= Mt. Everest.

When there are PALM TREES in a photo, perhaps we could give the whole, “But in Sibeeeriiaaaaaa” argument a rest.
It was cold. It was REALLY cold (for Florida).

I don’t know what her health issues are, but I get that she wanted to be warm. For a split second, I was jealous that she looked so toasty, because I was an absolute icicle there in the stands.

Let’s just say she has unique fashion tastes and be done with it. Fur is not some people’s cup of tea, and that’s fine. But it is for others, and we don’t know the circumstances surrounding this particular coat so we should just drop the issue. Ok?

This has got to be the most bizarre thread I have ever seen on COTH. A bunch of leather-boot-wearing, leather-saddle-riding, factory-farmed-chicken-chompers who chase foxes, poison mice, and don’t hesitate to gas ground hogs and shoot weasels are criticizing someone for wearing fur???

Fur is a renewable, biodegradable, environmentally friendly choice for apparel. A far better choice in many ways than a petroleum-based garment.

Fur-farms aren’t any more cruel than factory-farming chicken or feed-lotting cattle.

And you never know where the fur came from- maybe it’s from free-range sable that were killed for raiding free-range chicken coops.

I think we can guarantee that the sable weren’t skinned alive. Anyone trying to do such a stupid feat wouldn’t manage more than half a sable before needing a trip to the ER.

PERFECT!

I have an absolutely awesome fur hat.

That is all.

for once I absolutely agree with Wendy’s point and delivery.

I literally said out loud, “I can’t believe I just thumbs-upped one of Wendy’s posts.” :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I was in an elevator today going up to a job and a guy walked on wearing a black fur coat and a pair of fur mittens that, I swear, were about the size of a furry cat, and I couldn’t help but smile. I wanted to laugh, but I thought that would be a bit rude. It wasn’t the outfit, per se, it was thinking of this thread. I was wondering what the forum would say about him. But, he rocked those big mittens.

Peeking in from dressage land to say - I don’t have a problem with someone wearing fur. It’s not my cup of tea, but whatever.

But from looking at the photo of the woman in question - wow. She certainly gives the impression of someone with a serious self-esteem problem. What a statement she is making - “Look at ME! Look at ME! It’s all about ME!”

side note… a great deal of the early research in canine nutrition is a direct result of research into the best feeding practices for mink and fox.

In all fairness, this thread was started by and was the first post of a new member.

Was it Carson Kressly by any chance?

That’s probably the biggest statement she makes.

On a different note, how old is Betsee’s daughter? I read somewhere that she also rides, but am surprised we don’t hear much about her. Did she lose interest? Or does Betsee try to shield her from the media?

LOL, it’s super funny seeing her in that full-length fur coat, and the dude next to her in short sleeves and Capri-length pants

Really? I don’t get that at all. I see someone wearing a very pretty fur coat with a fugly cowboy hat. I don’t see anything about self-esteem. In fact, I image it takes a good amount of self-esteem or i-don’t-give-a-@#$% to wear a coat like that.

I came back to this thread in the hope of finally seeing a photo of Dr. Parker in the coat and hat, so now I have. She definitely has a, erm, unique sense of style. Her hair must be her “signature look” and I’m not sure what she was thinking about the hat, but I can tell you that coat was extremely expensive. My dad was always interested in fur coats (he never bought my mom jewelry but she always had a fur coat) and he taught me about them. Dr. Parker’s coat is about as pricey as they come, because sable is huge bucks and also because it’s just huge - it’s “wearing her” instead of vice-versa. You could get about two coats out of that many pelts! Anyway, it obviously makes her happy and I certainly can’t begrudge her enjoying the accomplishments of her beautiful horses. She takes great care of them and obviously supports animal welfare in other areas, too.

I did wind up wearing my fur coat today and yesterday and was darn glad I did. There truly is nothing warmer and I say this as a huge fan of down coats, too. I forgot to mention that I also have a traditional Russian coyote fur hat that came from Siberia itself; my mom bought it from a vendor on the Trans-Siberian RR. Talk about warm - you put that thing on and your whole body immediately goes up 10 degrees, no joke!

My Carhartt keeps me toasty warm, even in -35c weather, with just a thin t-shirt underneath. No need for fur. My saddles, boots, etc, probably came from what, 2 cows, that someone bbq’d. The leather is a by product of the food industry. Fur for fashion is wrong on so many levels.

Well, she is probably fun to hang out with and an interesting person. I’m not feeling the style but o.k., . . .

I cannot believe the majority on this thread are defending her decision to wear fur. Truly I am speechless.

I was in Florida, too. I certainly managed to escape frostbite without the aid of a fur coat.
