Drafts in Dressage!
Mine is pretty light - DTW/TB on the sire side and Clyde/TB on the dam side - so 1/2 TB but not really (genetics does not work like normal math). He is 16.3 and about 1200lbs.

ETA - your biggest hurdle in breeding a full draft to a warmblood may be finding a stallion owner willing to breed to a non-approved mare in their registry.
I have noticed a lot more warmblood stallions willing to cross breed in recent years. Certainly not the likes of Quarterback or De Niro, but still some nice stallions.
The only problem have with drafts and crosses is finding bridles and boots etc for them. DH’s full draft has a custom bridle because all the draft size bridles I found online were awful. And it’s hard to find non scotch bottom horseshoes in size 9.
The Belgian cross I ride is half Dutch. His warmblood side must have been refined because he got a normal head. But my oh my, his 3XL bell boots just barely fit. His feet are lovely, not platters, just BIG.
Size 9!!! Wow those are big. Do you have pics of your oversized horses?

Mine is pretty drafty with a huge head but can fit in oversize bridles…with an extra hole punched into the very end of the noseband.

So you requested a picture of our Perch/KWPN cross—and I can’t figure out how to post that because I don’t have one of those accounts for storing my pics. Anyway—here is a video instead. It’s from over a year ago—and I am riding (please do not judge—I rarely ride this guy and hopped on him only a few times before this show) but it gives you the perspective of his size. As you can see, he’s a lot more appropriate for a 6’4" guy. And you can see his flashy coloring (although his unusual shape in the top of his blaze is covered up by the ear bonnet). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVh3jICkgCs
Holy crap!! You look like a junior rider on him! He’s a BIG boy… and beautiful. I love his chrome. He’s perfect for anyone whose hobbies are basketball and dressage.

I’ve got one Too!

Miss Mare is 3/4 Tb and 1/4 Percheron I think it is a great mix. She is too heavy but so level headed. Only doing first level currently as we are in need of saddle that fits. She can take a joke pretty well: for some reason i thought I could hop on her bareback this week and stroll around indoor. After 5 minutes of hopping up and down trying to fling my self over her back from the 3 step mounting block while she stood like a rock I gave up .
Here we are last fall at small schooling show https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xta1/v/t1.0-9/12144885_911344652235739_8995767060612542764_n.jpg?oh=b6466b53ffd70b8e987e971a45d75673&oe=572E2DFE
Oh other posters I love your drafties!

Do you mind my asking what your horse’s name is? You are riding at the show grounds that I do most of my showing at, and I feel like I recognize the horse, but I can’t put my finger on it.

Not at all! His show name is: The Big Lebowski  and his barn name is (of course) The Dude (or just “Dude”). We bought him a couple years ago, and his name at the time was Duke. Maybe you knew him then? The reason we changed his name was because my husband started to just refer to him as “Dude” (because that’s what guys call other guys) and then it kind of stuck. Once that became his barn name, the show name was a no-brainer. Heh, heh.

Oh how funny- mine’s show name is The Dude Abides! I often just call him The Dude

I believe, that the Fjords, Haflingers, Gypsy Vanners, etc. are considered draft ponies, they are great for many things, are very versatile and all around, also good with children when supervised.

The Sugarbush Draft “cross” is just that, a cross, it is NOT a recognized draft breed as they take several different breeds, both lights and draft, and cross them, not sure what they are trying to do as the original ones that the founder had were Percheron/Appaloosa cross, tall, loud spotted and heavy boned often times. Until it is recognized, wish that they would be called a cross, as it is a misconception to the general public who does not know anything about it other than the romanticized version of this cross.

Draft horses do excel in many areas, but some, while they can execute the moves and have the balance and skill, you really need to take into consideration the bone mass, how well they move, what the concussion does to their joints, legs, their sheer mass of muscle, etc. A cross with a light horse or a warmblood then draft I have seen some amazing resulting foals who go on to have great careers in the dressage field or hunter/jumpers.

lrish draught stallion owners tend not to require mares to be registered as the IDHSNA will register any offspring of a RID and inspect them if desired.

Sophie’s dam supposedly was by Falke out of a Connemara mare and no one is willing to confirm that

That’s just perfect! I love that sort of thing in a world where things are sometimes ohhhh so serious. He looks like a blast to ride. Is he comfortable? I’d imagine having so much horse to sit on would either be really comfortable or make it really hard to get your leg in the right place cause there’s just so much of him. It might feel like when I got on my first lesson pony that was wayyy to big for me.

I’ve posted pictures of my DHH x hackney/clyde cross on the eventing forum, but here he is (with my event trainer on him). He looks like he is going to be a fantastic dressage horse, although I bought him as an event prospect. (Although his dressage trainer has already claimed the ride at Rolex lol!) He is on the small side, not quite 16 hands.

My draft is a Cleveland Bay cross. He is as honest as they come. Last year was out first year out showing and we debut at 1st level. We are working towards 2nd level and hope to make the jump to second this year. He has an unbelievable temperament and work ethic. He’s about 16hh and fairly heavy. He tries his little heart out every ride.

And I do recognize his name now! I will have to make a point of seeing him if you are going to show him at all this coming summer.

Very cool.

Pictures below of my draft cross. He’s a Shire/Appendix quarter horse cross

I have a Clydesdale/paint cross we just started at 11 years young. My plans when I bought him were eventing or foxhunting, with lower level dressage as a backup if it turned out he didn’t jump. But he is jumping so far, taking to everything wonderfully.

Very cute Farys! I’ve only ever seen one Cleveland Bay and was very interested in what they’re like as a breed. He had a beautiful trot and walk. I didn’t get to see him canter.

You all have beautiful horses. I always expected most of the draft crosses to be very tall, but it seems some of them are even under 16h and that seems to be just as prevalent as the taller ones.

The bridle is by Saber Leather but the brow band has been switched out for a Dobbert brow band.

Thanks! I’m pretty smitten with him. I would say his strongest gait is his canter. He is quite short coupled which makes collection very easy for him but he tends to get quite tight so we have to always do lots of stretchy work. Oddly enough though his extended trot packs quite a punch too!
