Dress Code for showing - probably dumb question

Sure - no discrimination based on sex

Slightly tangent, but can a woman wear a tie instead of a stock tie if she wanted?
Yes, or even a bow tie (if she wanted). There is no division by gender for attire, in the rules.

I’ve wondered why more women don’t wear a regular necktie. Especially because there are so many complaints about “having” to wear stock ties. Even though many people don’t realize they don’t have to. I guess people just don’t find the regular necktie on a woman with a jacket to be an appealing look? Annie Hall? Too dated?

Personally I like the tie on men. I don’t find the look of an open collar, with a coat on over it, to be an appealing look. It’s not allowed and I wouldn’t like to see it become an approved option. It’s preppie to me, and kind of slouchy looking. I picture someone named Chipper or Biff, on a dock in the Hamptons.

I don’t know if I’d like the look of the “stand up integrated collar” in place of a tie on a man, either. But I don’t think it enters into the picture because manufacturers are not even making shirts like that for men, that I have seen. Maybe jumpers wear them? To me it looks a little like a Nehru jacket. Or the tab-collar shirts that were in style in the early 80s.

But an open collar and a jacket IS against the rules for dressage - I agree, it is kind of sloppy looking, like the person forgot to finish dressing. If you wear a jacket, you wear neckwear.

All the shirts I have seen w/ the “SU integrated” collars have all had ruffles on them too - great if you are long and thin, but not so great for those of us who are short and busty. And most men won’t want to sport the ruffled look  Personally, ruffles just remind me of nightmare ironing projects from highschool…

oooo it does look weird for a guy with the stand up collar only. http://www.equino.com.au/shop2/img/p/91-411-thickbox.jpg

Ah, yes I hear you on the ruffles thing. There are actually a number of simpler designs, generally like this: http://www.dressageextensions.com/romfh-ss-tempo-show-shirt/p/64392/

So the rule book says “stock or tie or integrated stand up collar”.

WTF is an integrated stand up collar? I have a show shirt that zips up, like a mock turtleneck, w/ loop in the back to hold stock tie. Is this good enough? I would love one less white thing…

Or do I have to buy something that has ruffles or otherwise looks like it has a stock tie?

Then there’s the following question: Will people still wear stock ties even if they don’t have to? Am I dodging tradition by being cheap or lazy?
I believe the “integrated stand up collar” is a nod to the newer hunter/jumper show shirts with the snap collar rather than the old ratcatcher. They look much cleaner than the zip up shirts.

I always wear a stock tie, especially over a zipper shirt. They were once mandatory and I prefer to keep wearing one. I think they look better around the neck than a zipper shirt. Of note, there are a hundred light-weight and even velcro stock ties these days.

Truth is, the judge isn’t staring at your collar so you can probably get away with alot if it looks “clean”.

I’ve now lived in two states with regularly “waived jackets” and I’ve noted quite a bit of leniency on the part of the judges. I used to scribe alot and judges cared less about “busting” the rider for garment infractions than judging the ride in front of them. That said, I evesdropped on one judge who used turnout as a factor in breaking a tie (collectives turned out to be identical, too).
