Yeah, I was thinking pick up a longer “out of style” jacket for cheap and have it altered/shortened. I also have a navy Pikeur Diana and plan to wear it again when we start showing 2nd level. I found out the hard way that the longer bits can get stuck between the cantle and silicone full seats when posting!
I don’t think people take advantage of using a good tailor to alter clothes, especially when you are hard to fit.
Most of these technical coats are very easy to alter too since they have partial or no linings.
(I do my own alterations)
Really? That’s good to know. I do use a tailor in town for most of my show clothes (unfortunately). But I took one look at one of the new tech coats for hunters, saw all those sewn-down seams on that stretchy fabric and figured my tailor would probably stab me with her scissors if I asked her to alter it.
Most, if not all, commercial tailors have a serger and/or overlock machine which is good for pretty much all fabrics. I had to add extra stabilizer for my SmartPak Mesh Piper sleeves but I wanted minimal layers and it’s a very fine fabric, so definitely possible at a tailor’s. It is a pain to unpick some of the flat-felled seams because they’re sometimes glued as well, but it’s usually possible. Remember it’s easier to take something in than let it out so size up if possible. And if you’re petite, the technical fabrics are a lot more forgiving than the older, more stable fabrics.
nice to hear! bulbous seams disgust me…
Thanks for the tips on alterations. Since there are no tack stores anywhere near me, I have to order and try on everything.
I feel like I may have achieved some kind of record for the number of tech-fabric/air mesh show coats I’ve temporarily purchased, tried on and sent back. Do they eventually send the Fashion Police after you, once you’ve done that a certain number of times?
My spouse was slightly horrified at the pile of coats I ordered when I upgraded from an old-fashioned wool-blend coat to the technical - after 14 years you’d think they’d be used to this. When it comes time for tails I’m on the fence if I go fully custom with Flying Changes or just buck up and do it myself (I can tailor with wool, just not sure I feel up for trying to mesh properly tailoring with technical fabrics)
I’m definitely going fully custom with Flying Changes for tails.
Thanks to everyone for the tips on alterations. I also didn’t realize that the newer technical or mesh fabrics could be altered well. Hell, maybe I’ll just get my old Diana shortened! It still fits like a glove.
I have a gorgeous Kentucky dressage coat that I bought years ago on ebay for peanuts. Alas, it no longer fits my much larger covid body but can’t bear to sell it, it’s that lovely. That Pikeur Diana on ebay is my size. Hmmm.
Go for it! You won’t find a classier coat and it can be shortened. The coat I had tailored was lined and you can’t tell it was altered.
I had one of those previously, they are very flattering.
I put in the minimum bid and it ends Sunday so we’ll see.
Good luck!
Actually, I think the Wonder Woman boots should be allowed only if “coordinated” with the Wonder Woman bustier bodysuit and tights.
And the lasso of truth… Mustn’t forget the lasso of truth.
And the bullet deflecting bracelets.
I kind of secretly want the Wonder Woman boots.
That’s exactly what I’ve been doing for a couple of years so I can use my favorite pads without looking like I’m an advertisement! As long as the tag/logo/whatever is only on 1 side is works perfectly.
