Dressage attire guidelines

When did show coats get so short? It’s barely longer than a bolero. Pretty color though

what? it’s past hip length.

The days of melton coats halfway down the thigh have been gone for like, 20 years…

Page 16 showing “These are all examples of legal coats” - the blue coat in the lower left corner - the pattern looks almost identical to the one on the left on page 18 which is labeled "not subtle pinstriping or tweed pattern - not allowed.

If you squint when you look at them, you can see the pattern on the one that’s not allowed, but not on the legal one.

I agree, though, that some of these differences are hard to discern. You shouldn’t have to squint to decide whether it’s legal.

I think it’s going to be a nightmare.

:joy: picturing the TD squinting to see if the jacket is legal

Right… If there is one thing I have learned, it is that subjective rule-sets are an absolute nightmare to enforce with any degree of consistency.

I feel bad for officials. I wouldn’t want to enforce anything written in the current RB about attire.

It’s a real problem for many of us. The current short coats barely reach my hip bones and are incredibly unflattering. I wish there were some middle ground.

For us short folks I love the shorter lengths because they do fit better.

Agree. There are plenty of longer coats still available. Nobody will care if you go with a longer style. Whatever looks good on you will be fine.

and for those of us who are “torso challenged”.

That’s the problem - there really aren’t any more. I’ve looked all over for a new show coat and they’re all the same short length. I wish manufacturers would realize that bodies come in all shapes and sizes, and keep making different lengths.

They’re definitely not all the same length. My samshield Victorine is a solid 4” shorter than my pikeur Paulin.

Ebay is rife with longer coats like older Pikeurs, Eurostars and other high-end brands. Some are new. Poshmark is another source if you don’t mind used. The Pikeur Diana is lovely. I had one a long time ago an it was flattering, yet a bit long for my short torso Here’s one new, without tags:

I have a Pikeur Diana already, and it’s way too long. I want something in between! I don’t want something that comes to mid-thigh, but I also don’t want something almost a foot shorter. Picky, I know

I bought a nice Cavallo jacket and had it altered as it was a little too long. If you have a good tailor near you, your jacket can be customer altered. Mine turned out great.

No, you are not picky. Finding the right fit is hard. Ask me about the 20 pairs of breeches I own, all the same size, all a different fit.
