Dressage breeches: looking for recommendations for “straight” body shape

I really need a few pairs of new breeches and would love some help finding ones that might fit. I’ve always had a more “straight” and less curvy body type, but since I hit a certain age, my waist is even less well defined, even though I haven’t actually gained weight. I have pretty skinny hips and butt, and as a result, many breeches - including most of the ones I own - that fit well in that area are uncomfortably tight in the waist.

Does anyone share this body type and have recommendations for (full seat) breech brands/models that fit well and are comfortable? It’s so difficult to tell just from looking at pictures online! I tend to prefer technical fabrics and silicone dots (or similar) for the seat/knee patches, and a mid rise, but I’m open to any suggestions!

You don’t happen to wear about a 34 do you? I just bought two pairs of Horze Callie breeches in a size 32 (Euro 44) and they fit in the butt but are too big in the waist. I was thinking the would fit someone who needs a 34 with a straighter build through the waist and hips. Other Horze breeches I have tend the same way, but still nip in a little more at the waist.

Romfh Sarafina

No I wear a 26-28, and in Euro usually a 42 which is different from your conversion (maybe it’s that many of the Euro/Italian breeches run small), so unfortunately yours won’t work. But Horze is actually a very good thought! I used to have some B Vertigo Tiffany breeches, and as I recall they had this kind of fit. I’d forgotten about them! Thanks!

I actually have tried the Sarafina, and I know many people love them. But they have a traditional full seat, which I find bulky and uncomfortable. I just don’t have a lot of butt, and the extra material of the full seat bunches in the crotch and at the fold between my butt and thigh and causes rubs. This is the main reason I’ve come to really prefer the silicone grip breeches.

I really like the Pikeur Candelas–built for us who are more athletic types (straight up and down). I find they are true to size. I think you need to add 12 to your regular US size for the euro size (so if you wear a 28, you would wear a 40).

I have a similar straight build, and the Sarafinas looked like flares on me.

My body is straight and long waisted, so need to be careful with sufficient rise in otherwise fitting size 26. I usually opt to go to 28 which can leave me with baggy knees and butt, so silicone grips usually work better unless the legs are too wide at the knees. Premier Equine UK has generous waists. I bought size 28 and could comfortably go down to a 26 - unfortunately the return cost to ship back is very high.

Samshield Diane breeches. They have pleats in the back that help adjust the fabric to you below the waist.

They are expensive in the US but about half the price if you order from the UK/EU. Royal Equestrian and Hypostore frequently have sales on previous season colors.

These definitely look worth a try! I am going to order a pair. I’ve never had any Pikeur breeches.

I have a lot of different brands of Italian breeches - Animo, For Horses, Ego7, one or two Equiline - and I have found generally 40s to be quite snug, even when I was very comfortable in US 26 (now I’d consider myself between 26/28). For all those brands except maybe Animo, mine are all 42s. Maybe someone else might have chosen 40s - I don’t like feeling like my breeches are a sausage casing lol - or maybe it’s my particular shape in the Italian cut, or maybe it’s that those Italian breeches really are cut small, but whatever the reason, that “add 12” conversion doesn’t work for me!

Edited: but Pikeur is not Italian is it, so maybe the 12+ will actually work!

I’ve often wondered about Samshield! Their show coats look so nice too. I will look into these, thanks!

I also add 14 for most Italian brands and find +12 to work well for true EU sizing like Pikeur. Samshield uses French sizing which is one size larger than EU so adding 10 for them works for me.

I have the same build as the OP and the older Sarafinas fit me well, but the newer ones (with the silicone seat) don’t fit as well. Same with the Romfh Isabellas. I did just buy 2 pair of Cavallo (Camille?) with a silicone full seat which are great. They are more like tights in the fabric, but with the nice structure of a tailored breech. The waist was also stretchier than most, which helped keep that snug while not having a baggy a$$.

Maybe Calima? I don’t see a Camille! I wish these brands had a page with a guide to their breeches explaining the difference between each model, including the fit. It’s so confusing if you don’t already wear them.

There’s also the Calypso Grip Mobile and the Christina Mobile, which both are described as being very stretchy, but the names don’t sound much like Camille…

Maybe you guys don’t wear your pants as tight as I do . They fit me great, nothing else really compares. I also prefer silicone but I’m never going to find that close of a fit in anything else. I’ve tried SO many brands.

In fairness, I also come from a long line of flat-assed women. :joy:

I bought these:

Wouldn’t have purchased them if I hadn’t been able to try them on but now they’re my faves!

Have you tried Pipers from SmartPak? I’m not a “straight” body type and they don’t work for me AT ALL.
