Drilll 'n Tap

How much extra does your farrier charge to drill and tap?

Nothing :D! LOVE my farrier!!!

I’ve had farriers charge in the range of 10-20$ to drill/tap all the way around, depending on the farrier, the location, etc.

$30 extra, but on the reset (if the shoes are still in good shape), he’ll tap the holes again and replug them for no additional charge.

Nothing.

4 shoes with clips and all 4 drilled and tapped. $100.00

And he does a great job, in fact another farrier commented on the job and the fact that he draws his own clips.

OH.MY.GOD. where is your farrier and how soon can I find him? Holy cow, Batman. Such a thing is $300 in my stupid area.

nothing.

Yeah, seriously? You folks whose farriers are charging nothing need to count your blessings! (Mine have charged about $25 extra, sometimes more–as in “per shoe.” And my present farrier is very good and fair and inexpensive, especially considering the time he takes. But my horse is in Loudoun County. :sigh:)

Most in my area including myself charge $20 extra per/pair.

I cannot understand doing it for free it takes time, and equipment the other non drilled/tapped clients do not utilize.

My farrier is $20 extra (total for all 4)

Nothing here also.

I have been a client of mine for years now and was one of his first when he started out here in Oklahoma. He does a great job and even does my horses when I am not at home. He just asks me if I plan on showing in the next 6 weeks or so and if I am, he drills and taps for me. If not, he puts regular shoes on. Plus he is very decent priced… especially here in Oklahoma.

Bobbi

$10 extra per shoe.

Actually I don’t itemize my farrier bill–I just write a check every 5-6 weeks. But the bill isn’t any different when there are stud holes vs. no stud holes, so I’m assuming my farrier doesn’t nickel-and-dime for these extras.

How long does it take for a farrier to drill and tap?

About a minute per shoe.

It takes my farrier longer than a minute per shoe. And I know she was relieved when I said that the 5 year old didn’t need them. Maybe there are different ways of drilling & tapping?

I do know that however she taps them, is by far the best tapping job, ever. My old farriers…I’d struggle to get the studs in and usually ended up having to re-tap the holes myself every single time before I could get the studs screwed in. It involved a lot of bad words on my part!

This farrier, though, I don’t know what she does, but those puppies screw in like a hot knife going through butter. I say a silent “thank you” every time I put studs in now.

20$ more.

So I pay 100 bucks for 4 clipped shoes.

the one time he drills/taps shoes I give an extra 20 bucks.

After that if he reuses the shoes there is not drill/tap charge.

He also does the best job of any farrier I have ever had.

I count my blessings every night for this guy. He’s great.

About a minute. . . and I re-tap every time I use them since my horse has a talent for packing dirt into the holes, even when I use plugs.

Not sure how the 1 minutes ones are done?

2 holes per shoe about 2 minutes to drill, tapping when done carefully so as to not break taps or put in less than stellar threads takes another 3, then I put in plugs so that is another minute.

Each shoe would take 6 minutes do 4 you have an extra 24 minutes. Add to that the cost of taps that break(occasionally), drill press, drill bits that break, loose the temper due to heat, plus the cost of tapping fluid, and plugs and the extra cost of hauling all that crap around and anyone giving it away is loosing money.

I have reasonable rates so I charge for extras I could see some who charge more “throwing it in” but to have good rates and include drill/tap is a poor business decision.

I can trim a horse in the time it takes to drill and tap for shoes so why should one be free and not the other?
