drugging hunt horses

I’m concerned by the number of horses I see being drugged in our hunt fields. I think it’s unsafe and shows poor horsemanship. Has this always been going on, or am I just now noticing it? I refuse to do it. If your horse can’t hunt without being tranquilized, maybe you need a different horse. Other disciplines forbid drugging. I think it should be forbidden in foxhunting competitions. How do other foxhunters feel about this issue?

What do you consider a “foxhunting competition”?
One that passes over your bridge?

“I’m concerned by the number of horses I see being drugged in our hunt fields.” I am curious how one sees horses being drugged in one’s hunt field? Would you please describe?

One post.

No idea where she is from.

Refers to :“foxhunting competitions”. When have you ever heard that phrase used by a person who is in the sport?

A troll.

Ignore.

“foxhunting competitions”

Isn’t that where people take their foxes out to a prearranged location, release them, and the first fox to bring back a food item wins the competition?

I think I overheard my neighbor talking about one he went to last week.

“I am shocked and appalled! Shocked and appalled about alleged drug use among foxhunting horses! Why can’t they be like us stock horses and just crack a cold one?”

Well, I for one would like to know the Snobbington Hunt’s position on this issue.

Houdini and I were planning to contact the secretary about capping with SH this year. But we weren’t told there would be a competition. If there is, we’ll have to reconsider.

I mean, like, dude: competition is such a buzz kill.

The Snobbington weighs in!

We at the Snobbington Hunt recommend that all new members be aced as part of their first few hunts. They’re horses are usually fine; it’s the riders that line up for their ace shots just prior to move off. Like a flu shot line; they are given them free of charge. We find we like them better that way. And they talk less too!!

It’s like pro baseball and steriods…If everyone is doing it in “competition” it evens out the playing field.

Uhhh, I’m still confused. What “competition” are you talking about in the hunt field? Best dressed? Prettiest stock tie? Biggest flask? (I’d win that one, I am after all, Italian).

:lol::lol:

Would this be instead of, or in addition to, the stirrup cup?

The North American Field Hunter Championship, for instance, is a yearly competition we take quite seriously. There’s no need for all the disparaging comments. It was an honest and sincere post on my part.

Unfortunately it has little or nothing to do with hunting. Play acting for the racing crowd is fine if that’s what you like, but don’t confuse it with hunting.

Whoa! I beg to differ with this statement. Sure, there’s the final day with the mock hunt for the crowd and the final evaluation of the team, but don’t sneeze at the week of judged hunting at 5 different Virginia fixtures before that!

I know several foxhunters who have competed, and one who won the championship, and I certainly wouldn’t disparage them as foxhunters with this kind of comment.

I think anything that brings foxhunters, racing folk and spectators together in a positive manner is great.

:: assumes the two-point and wiggles out of breeches, baring bum :: Ready for my shot!!

But what about all the drugs? The concern is about “the number of horses being drugged in our hunt fields.” Do the foxhunters and the racing horses share their drugs, or do they bogart?

My horse is a Saddlebred, so you know he keeps his stash to himself.

De ja voux all over again

I know we’ve had this topic before. There are people who would never ace their horse to hunt and others that do. I personally have never done it although I have aced for other things (Like outriding at Rolex on a green horse).

There are a few who use it in our hunt but they are few. Sometimes it is used to get a horse over their first hunt jitters or a horse that has a particular issue.

I see nothing wrong with a small amount of Ace. I have not seen that it affects a horse’s ability to hunt or his coordination. In some horses it makes them safer as they seem more able to focus on their job and there is less jumping around.

I agree it should not be used in “fox hunting competitions” such as the field hunters championship. I don’t know if any competitors are using it.

Bless your heart. You so clearly know nothing about hunting…

If you genuinely want to know folks’ take on the issue, a simple search will reveal to you many threads where it’s been discussed at length. But honestly, it doesn’t look like that’s why you are here.

Equibrit, I do disagree with you however on what I fondly refer to as the intergalactic field hunter championships. I participated a few times in the 80s-90s, mainly because it was a steal for hunting, $70 got you five days of hunting in a row and some mighty fabulous breakfasts to boot. And folks do take the ‘competition’ part of that seriously, as I discovered when my $700 quarter horse was named to the finals on the first day of hunting…lots of daggerish looks at me the rest of the week by folks on five figure thoroughbreds…

OH my goodness!!!

Ohhhhh, that CarrieK!!! She’s so quick to drop her drawers! But tis not needed dearie!! Ace shots are given IN THE ARM of course!!! Like flu shots! Clearly YOU’VE never gotten one…ahem!!

Disparaging!!! Nothing about the Snobbington Hunt is disparaging!!! :stuck_out_tongue: Well…at least as far as I know… what does disparaging even mean?..But I think we need to give Carrie K a free cap for mooning us! What do ya say fellow members?!! And Equibrit? I’m thinking we will give you your ace shot in the butt after all…
We here in Ole Virginny take our field hunter championships very seriously.
Drug free for sure. I didn’t say flask free…drug free!!!
And Ain’tmisbehaving? In ADDITION to the stirrup cup! Can’t believe you even asked!!!
