I don’t have any photos from the class, but here we are afterwards.
I was there by my lonesome, sleeping in the tack stall.
Or my second or third guess.
Are you referring to a specific stallion? Different stallions often require a different number of straws per dose to meet the minimum requirements for PGM (progressive forward motility). This is true for both fresh-cooled semen and frozen semen, and a stallion may need different numbers of straws for each - say, 3 straws per dose for fresh-cooled, and 7 straws for frozen semen. The number of required straws can also vary from collection to collection, from one breeding season to another. There is a science to it and good stallion managers are very careful to do all they can to ensure semen is collected and processed and shipped in a way that helps ensures high quality semen is delivered to the specified address at the appropriate time. There are also pretty stringent requirements by the EU for semen being distributed throughout the EU, and although USDA doesn’t have such strict requirements, good stallion managers in Europe usually adhere to the same EU protocols when processing semen for export elsewhere.
Is this (bosal rein) a breed show phenom? I’m not quite sure what you mean…
Are they really thawing it? I could be wrong, but I thought the technician would take a slice from the frozen straw and immediately reseal the straw and place it back in the nitrogen canister.
@oldernewbie, thanks for sharing that video! I don’t think I’d seen the full version of it before. My little Half Arab palomino is scheduled to be bred to Zee Kahili (this year’s Supreme Champion sport horse in hand) in 2024.
KWPN and KWPN-NA are mother-daughter registries. No difference in the rules. Though they of course had to construct rules for Hunters here as that’s just not a thing in Europe.
The judges at the keurings are from Holland, so they’re judging to the standard in Holland.
Now ADHHA? Yes, their goal is a high stepping horse. The put much less emphasis in the rest of the body. The hind leg is VERY important in KWPN breeding.
Been there done that kinda an oxymoron!
Ok, definitely a whole lot difference in what’s on the ground though (in CDE, can’t speak for the carriage/fine harness side), although I was part of a conversation where a top CDE driver who had a soft spot in his heart for the older high stepping Dutch horses referenced the US as probably the last place you can find x lines (x being some old style dhh whose name meant nothing to me). But that says a lot right there and it’s nothing new, we breed for something that was going out of style over a decade ago…
I’m hoping eventually they’ll incorporate a combined driving sub-direction as the breeders who are aiming for CDE horses are definitely looking for something completely different than the fine harness types. And as a result, when the CDE bred horses go to keurings, they may not do as well as they’re being judged against a fine harness standard. It’s been very educational to go to the keurings and see the differences, even within the singular breeding direction.
There’s so many variables in finding a good CDE horse, nevermind a pair or team that as a practical matter it may never be as effective as their other breed directions. I imagine that has some impact on the decision. Also there’s a great deal more variety in breeds used in driving, which is already a small market comparatively speaking.
He was clearly the judge’s favorite, both in hunter type and dressage type. It was fun to watch him exit one night after a victory pass when he stopped right before the out gate and did a nice spin! Definitely a using horse! Your foal should be wonderful!
Gawd I hate that particular affectation.
For me, it’s right up there with the pro crawling up a hunter’s neck to pretend they’re being jumped out of the tack.
I have a long story about one of her dogs. The dog was lost in transport to its new home and it ran away. Took days to find it but she didn’t come to help find it. A woman found the dog in terrible condition. The way she treated that woman and the person who the dog was supposed to go to is insane. This was the event that pushed me over the edge with her. I blasted her on Facebook regarding the situation and I couldn’t care less what her response would be. Of course she threatened me with a law suit if I didn’t stop. Uh huh honey, you just try to do that with your law degree (that she doesn’t have).
Thank you!! The Renai. That is it.
It’s known as ‘rolling’ yes?
But… ya’know… it’s just that ‘one bad person’ responsible for all the dramas and her predicament, right?
Uh huh… by name of Kate Shearer.
I’m not familiar with that term.
If you get them before they’re completely messed up, they move very nicely once rehabbed and conformation appears to change (because it’s not so much conformation as a training travesty that puts ALL the wrong muscle on). If you don’t get them before they are mentally and physically bent to the weird shape - it’s a long, hard road … but often there is a nice horse within if you take the time with rehab.
