I will have to give that a whirl, as a fat braid is part of my issue.
Do you pull the added hair over into the braid (french) or under (dutch)? The pictures look like french, but some it’s coming in the side and not over like a french.

It’s a nice achievement to win best young horse in the jumper DIRECTION - or even second best young horse - so congrats on that.
However, if KWPN is truly calling that accolade “best young jumper,” then it is using inaccurate terminology. The horse didn’t go over jumps, so it isn’t “the best young jumper.” I know the KWPN inspectors are some of the best and most astute horsemen and horsewomen on the planet, but misnomers of that sort will only confuse the buying public. I would suggest they reevaluate how they describe that particular program.
I’m getting my mare’s foetus sexed this month. How does this decrease the chance of a pregnancy, any more than a routine 14- or 42- day scan?
Edited to correct my terminology for clarity.
I’m the opposite. I can do a tail, but never done a mane. I used to clip manes off to avoid braiding - the Australian braid!
I don’t think my TB would suit a zipperneck so I might have to pull out a finger if I want to look anything but a hillbilly at the next comp.
Tips for numptie all-fingers braiders?
Actually, serious question: Do people still pull manes? Or has scissoring become acceptable? I bought thinning shears but they have yet to be christened.
Yes!
In my part of the world manes are for sure pulled still.
I have more than one friend who gets twitchy if scissors or thinning sheers are mentioned and then will volunteer to pull just so that does not happen.
Your experience might be different.
I can only speak for my bit of the world.
IMO pulling is most important for hunter braids, and less-but-still important for the jumper type button braids. Dressage braids that are put in looser I don’t think it matters much at all.
That’s just me!
I really love my guy’s long mane. Might have to look at what the Arabian or PRE people do.
Thanks! “hunter” doesn’t exist here, outside maybe “show hunter” classes in either Ag / hack shows or Western as part of the english classes, thought I think the Ag / hack turnout is very close to the hunter-style of braiding.
Dressage here, so not too concerned with tiny nubbins.
I wouldn’t pull, then - especially if you’re doing hooded-type braids. The hair can be quite a bit longer as well, which I personally prefer the look of on the unbraided horses. Not long, but not ultra short.
I would say that is something you should discuss with Kwpn then
No you can literally get the embryo itself before it’s in a mare sexed and colored. By taken away a portion of the cells before going in the mare to do this it decreases the pregnancy likelihood. I can pull up the email from Dr Foss at EMS and post here if you do not believe me
Absolutely no scissors!!! Most braiders will walk if they see something scissored lol! Pulling is a must and if the horse hates it I just suggest doing it during dental or whenever it’s knocked out so none the wiser.
I can be very dense sometimes, but I am not sure why K is being corrected on her description of her foal award. It seems to be the way the KWPN labels them. They use the word “Jumping” (not jumper) at times but obviously they do not mean the foals were “jumping” at the inspection. They use jumper interchangeably in other places when describing the awards.
. Keuring Top Ten Awards is described:
“In addition to individual awards presented at each location on the annual KWPN-NA keuring tour, the KWPN-NA is proud to recognize exceptional individuals from the overall tour as our yearly TOP TENS in the dressage, jumper, hunter, gelders, and harness divisions, as well as IBOP, DG Bar Cup, and GES Cup winners. Click below to see the 2022 Top Tens, and congratulations to all!”
There is a PDF that shows:

Here is a great example of what I was trying to tell you before.
Your writing does not come across how I believe you think it does. Either that you are being rude and confrontational on purpose.
That person was asking for sincere advice/information. No where did they even imply that they did not believe you. Why slap them with “if you do not believe me I can prove it” instead of something educational on the topic they are asking about?
I have not ever corrected her on her description of foal awards so I am not sure why you responded to me here.
My post was about pulling manes.
Ahh, you mean an ET foal. Mine is el naturale, mummy and daddy had a tinder date and mummy walked away with a doggy bag.
We are just doing the scan-sexing at 60 days. The colour will have to be a surprise.
That’s gorgeous. Just what I want. Only no bows. I love the little bead in the tail photo you posted, might hide one in there.
I don’t pull manes, not when God invented thinning shears and razors. Or clippers.
It’s ok, I think we were at cross-purposes.
Katy is talking about sexing embryos pre-implant (I think?) from cells, which if it’s anything like the test they do for human fetuses with the big needle, then I totally understand why there is a risk to the foetus.
I thought she meant the foetal scan done at 60-70 days, where the vet looks for the physical structure of urethral tube (?) via ultrasound.
Maybe because this entire 1000+ thread has tried to discredit every aspect of my life down to my footwear. If it were a normal post I would not be defensive but here heck yes I am!
