Dutch rider Adelinde Cornelissen eliminated in dressage: Horse's mouth bleeding.

If you find a picture of Steffen Peters riding Ravel in the same manner as Parzival is being ridden, you direct me to it and I’ll also say it’s disgusting! Oh wait, you won’t find a photo of him being ridden like that because… he’s not ridden like that!!

And if it were a German, he would have already been given some sort of drug to stop the blood flow…

More schooling photos available here. http://st-georg.de/bilder_popup.php?objekt_id=8357&next=2

Yes, that was her YESTERDAY. We haven’t seen any pics yet of this morning’s warmup AFAIK but I’m sure they’ll surface…

There’s not really anything to see. Beautiful test, did the halt-reinback, then they rang the bell and everyone looked confused.

I’m sorry, but yuck. Maybe I am a know-nothing, but the photos of this horse and the Swedish horse just make me nauseous. This is not harmony, and it is not “happy.”

I hope whoever ends up on the medal podium in dressage does not ride their horse this way; that would be a travesty, and I don’t care what country they ride for.

The “bit lip” was the Dutch version of the truth.

The horses look lovely in the arena, it’s the warm-up that is the problem.

I’ve been around horses and different competition disciplines the majority of my life and I have never seen a horse bite his lip.

No one said anyone punched him in the mouth before he went in. Even if he did bite his lip, why in the hell would he have bitten his lip?

Maybe it was during the angry chomping at the bit!

I wouldn’t be all that surprised if he did bite his lip/tongue - it’s the rare rider at this level that is going to bloody a horse’s mouth accidentally, whether they use rollkur or not.

I definitely don’t support her using rollkur, but I think it’s certainly likely it was a random lip/tongue bite. She’s a pretty experienced competitor who likely uses rollkur a decent amount at home - I’d guess she knows how far she can go without getting a bloody mouth. And I’d imagine Parzival’s mouth is relatively toughened to this sort of work… But hey, it’s possible.

As to how or why it happened, perhaps the horse has a busy tongue (can lead to accidental bites before the ride) or got startled before the ride and jerked his head funky or slightly hit something while messing with the bit. I’ve seen horses accidentally bite their tongue (more than a lip), so I think it could happen.

Exactly. Obviously quite a disobedient and unnatural little scroll.

I remember when my biggest disappointment was that someone I knew polled with a PVC pipe.

I’m confused as to how a horse could bite their lips…tongue sure, although even that is rather strange because of the way that the bit sits on the tongue.

I’ve never seen a horse do either.

Jesus. And these are supposedly educated horseman. Makes me sick.

Well, I have a VERY clear photo of her with the blood prominently showing. It was sent to me by a professional photographer who is there. I am waiting to hear from him if I can release the photo.

I do want to make it clear that the photo shows the blood but not WHY there is blood. And while I am NOT a fan of Rollkur, I HAVE had horses bite their tongues while being ridden and bleed a bit, so I am not ready to condemn this rider for brutal riding based on this incident.

Here’s the video: http://www.paardenfun.nl/plaza/video/weg2010/viewvideo/47/wereld-ruiter-spelen-2010/adelindecornelissenteamdressuurmp4.html

I don’t think anybody’s really disputing that there was blood in the horse’s mouth. The judges at C and E both saw it - it wasn’t just one judge.

The issue is causation.

here are some pics…
http://www.dressage-news.com/?p=8328

it does look to me like he is bleeding from the front of his mouth since the blood is not up in the corners etc

eta: just watched the video - since she rides with all her weight pulling back on the bits i wonder why this hasn’t hap[pend before?

We merged two threads on this topic into one.

Thanks,

Who [edit] are you mbm to criticize how she rides??? [edit]

that video brought tears to my eyes. The rider handled it as graciously as anyone could. Sure, there may be more to this story but for now my heartmost feelings go out to the Dutch.
