Dutch rider Adelinde Cornelissen eliminated in dressage: Horse's mouth bleeding.

The story that accompanies the photos of the bleeding states “Stewards rushed to inspect the horse and found that he had bitten himself on the underside of the tip of his tongue.”.

So the cut is on the underside of his tongue apparently. Perhaps from having his tongue pressed against his teeth? If she warmed him up in a similar fashion as the photos from yesterday, I could see that happening. Every pic showed his lips and mouth gaping open with tremendous rein pressure.

bort84, this is not to pick at you personally, but your statement:

She’s a pretty experienced competitor who likely uses rollkur a decent amount at home - I’d guess she knows how far she can go without getting a bloody mouth. And I’d imagine Parzival’s mouth is relatively toughened to this sort of work…
just makes me sad that people could be getting so used to this type of riding that they consider it no big deal.

ETA: I don’t mean to imply that you approve of this type of riding, since I don’t know you. The remark just jumped out at me.

Quote from Dressage News article:

Consideration could be given to amending the rule to allow for an inspection and if the injury is so minor that it clearly does not affect the welfare of the horse the rider could be permitted to show later in the event.

The FEI better not even CONSIDER IT.

Great to hear the judges are taking the lead with affirmative action.

Who the HELL are you mbm to criticize how she rides??? Seriously, you are a effing moron. You have been batsh&t stupid since the days when you said your horse Chase was bad because “he was in the womb wrong”.

that video brought tears to my eyes. The rider handled it as graciously as anyone could. Sure, there may be more to this story but for now my heartmost feelings go out to the Dutch.
Um, and you’re “batsh&t” rude. Wow, what a nut.

What are the judges taking the lead on? If the horse had blood on his leg he would be eliminated just the same.

^ Indeed I would hope they would. That’s what they’re supposed to do.

I would think it would be appropriate to let them ride again if the injury is minor, but I’d have a lot more sympathy if I hadn’t seen the other pictures of warmup.

Per the rulebook, if a horse has blood in his mouth or in the foam, it has to be eliminated. That would be the lead he was speaking of probably.

I don’t know.

Even if he did bite his tongue and all was innocent, that was a pretty significant amount of blood coming from his mouth. I have to seriously doubt that putting him back in a double bridle would be comfortable with a laceration that big.

If you find a picture of Steffen Peters riding Ravel in the same manner as Parzival is being ridden, you direct me to it and I’ll also say it’s disgusting! Oh wait, you won’t find a photo of him being ridden like that because… he’s not ridden like that!!
Actually, I saw a photo of Stefen riding Ravel pretty darn deep in the warm up area. Go to Edward Gals blog and you’ll find it.

Perhaps I’m blind, or oblivious, but I can’t find any photos of Ravel on Gal’s blog. Is this the link you’re referring to: http://www.edwardgal.nl/?p=11&id=646&l=NL?

I can’t find 'em either. You’re going to have to ante up with a direct link, Fish.

The 2010 Radio Show: Press conference regarding Parcival’s elimination. There is a photo of very small nick on his tongue, but he will not be re-instated.

(from a Facebook post - you can look up The 2010 Radio Show) - they have reporters there.

Per Adeline’s tweet: "all went so well… until reinback… parzival bit the tip of his tongue… the judge rang the bell… eliminated… end of competition… "

My horse bit her tongue while I was riding her in a snaffle schooling first level. It bleed TONS, but we could never find anything more than a nick in her tongue. Just one of those sensitive spots that can tend to bleed heavily.

I found this http://www.edwardgal.nl/?p=11&id=643&l=NL

The page I found with bunches of photos is hard to get to. Edward Gals home page, clicked on News -> Dutch leading after day 1 -> Clicked on Dutch page for pics and found this, scrolled down the page:

I’m probably reading too much into it, but upon watching the video I was really surprised by her reaction. She hardly glanced down at his mouth a couple times and then left the arena.

If it were me, and I was told my horse was bleeding from the mouth, I’d immediately dismount, unbuckle the noseband, and try to assess the damage.

I just think her reaction was inappropriately nonchalant…almost like she wasn’t all that surprised.

Just shoot me now.
