EHV-1 at WEC Ocala - is it real

I saw varying opinions, and a COTH article- wanted to know the latest. Thanks.

Another thread here EHV1 Outbreak in Ontario/Quebec/ All over

It is in Ocala but not on the grounds of WEC or HITS.

assume there is exposure at WEC for your horses’ safety. it is at a farm with horses that go back and forth to WEC. whether the confirmed case was there or not (which is the subject of much debate) it doesn’t matter because exposure was possible.

Considering it stays on surface for 30 days and horses typically don’t show symptoms until 14 days after infection, I would be worried.

This makes me really nervous. Am I right in thinking that any horse that has been at WEC over the last few weeks could have potentially been exposed? And what if those horses leave or have already left? What if they’re now at HITS or WEF or Gulfport?

Yikes, it can take some time to show up so I am thinking a lot more horses who have shown there will start popping up.

In PA now https://www.chronofhorse.com/article/ehv-1-case-confirmed-in-chester-county-pennsylvania?fbclid=IwAR1IAE0xyxp670ZPbS1f7v6mTDl5Ka_VmWjnsQmeDZ_JyPZbc2634MdAsYs

The article said it wasn’t connected to exhibiting the horse, but who knows.

Right, hard to know with how easily it can be carried around and how long it hangs around.

It’s in Virginia now also according to the equine disease website posted earlier.

Some barn owners in Wellington believe the EHV-1 is in Wellington already and are taking security measures at their barns seriously.

Oh shoot… it’s all over. Wonder if Rolex will run.

Nooooo. This is like Groundhogs Day only its Covid for the poor horses. We didn’t learn anything? We’re just going to allow people to ship out of Florida and not even try to get ahold of this? Really?

My local vet sent out a nice long notice to all their clients because we’re quite close to WEC.

This statement was concerning to me:

“Some horses have what we call latent infections which means they have the EHM virus but it does not cause the disease until a stressful event (such as showing or trailering) or their immune system becomes compromised.”

Sounds to me like some of these horses at WEC could be ‘silent carriers’ of the virus and without actual outward symptoms, could be shipped home to many states where they could
come down with actual full blown symptoms. Guess this is how it spreads so easily also and seems to just pop up out of no where.

Most horses have been exposed to EHV1 at some point in their lives (something like 80 percent are carriers). It can be latent for years before they suddenly start to shed it. And they can shed it without being symptomatic.

The Vet’s in the articles from Europe and Ontario seem to say the strain going around has worse symptoms than they normally would see. So that’s concerning.
