EHV1 Outbreak in Ontario/Quebec/ All over

Good article.

Do wish they’d talked more about the timeline. My understanding is that they spike a fever (at least sometimes?) a few days after infection. That goes away fairly quickly and the symptoms start a few days after that. Hence the importance of taking temperatures twice daily if you think there was a chance of exposure.

I remember the 2013 outbreak well. I was a BM, we had two horses at HITS and 14 horses at the south farm in Ocala. We were walking back from the office and saw them trying to load a neurological horse on to a trailer.
We were several barns away, and were always careful about keeping our horses away from others. But decided to load ours up and quarantine them. We stayed at the farm in Ocala for several weeks taking temps 2x/day. Luckily everyone was fine. Got health papers in order and shipped everyone back to Ontario, where we again quarantined everyone. I lived in the upstairs apartment at the farm in Ontario and used the side door for several weeks, I didn’t even set foot in the main barn. I only dealt with the horses who had come home from Florida.

*Edited to add that we quarantined voluntarily, as did many other barns. We weren’t ordered to quarantine by the authorities.

No indication of the type of EHV-1 in the article.

Between Covid and EHV1 I can’t believe they are still making plans for the World Cup Final. Does anyone think realistically it can or should go ahead?

Does anyone have further intel on the LA case? There’s so many big barns here with multiple trainers - and the circuit at DIHP is in full swing with tons of horses going back and forth.

Does anyone know if there have been more cases in Ontario or are we stabilizing?

The link above shows 4 more cases, foals aborted.

Also more news here

They talk about one of the horses who got sick at New Bolton on the latest Heels Down Pod Cast.

A friend of mine in Europe shared a post from a barn that had been at the Sunshine Tour then went on to Qatar. I guess they found out about the positives in Spain after they left, horses were tested at that time and negative. 2 weeks after being in Spain, a couple of the horses developed fever and came up positive.

That’s the tail end of the usual incubation period right? Seems like a long time for horses to be moving around potentially thinking they are in the clear.

I will need to ship my horse cross country in the coming weeks/months and unfortunately the approx $10k for totally private charter in a rig I trust is a bit out of budget for one horse.

@IPEsq This is one of the reasons for diligently recording temperatures twice daily while at a show and afterwards. My understanding is that they can spike a fever briefly a few days after exposure and then go back to being normal for a number of days until becoming symptomatic again, this time more violently.

Thus you can catch things sooner if you’re good about taking temperatures.

The extended lockdown applies to all countries that have international scheduled events through April 11—Austria, Belgium, Spain, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Sweden. The FEI again strongly recommends that all national federations in mainland Europe cancel their national events in order to minimize horse movement.
