And the new rule has now been put on indefinite hold.

I am so disgusted that this has been put on hold…
I’m rather disgusted that this has suddenly become another reason for the Trump Haters to fume and whine.
Where were all you fumers and whiners back in the '90s when the Clinton Administration created the “self policing” system that you now so loudly decry? Absent, if memory serves. When I was part of a small group to challenge the failures we were truly walking in the “wilderness.”
How many of you lobbied the G. W. Bush Administration to alter the system to make it more effective? Not so many, as I recall.
Three years ago how many of you Obama Lovers lobbied his USDA to do something? None, if memory serves. Not until the infamous PETA tapes surfaced, which actually don’t have anything to do with soring but rather Mark I Mod 0 cruelty, surfaced did we hear from you. Your faux moral outrage was non-palpable.
Then people in USDA/APHIS who had for years watched these horrors were able to get the “ear” of the political class at USDA and get a new set of rules. Sadly, those rules are now on hold. I don’t like it but that just joins a long list of things I don’t like. So, as with some many things in life, I have to suck it up and live with it. And write to my representatives telling them to back the PAST legislation and to pressure the Administration to release these rules.
Maybe these rules will be implemented as proposed and maybe not. Time will tell.

it’s not the only thing; this is a result of the trump admin requirement to review rules since the election. EPA just stayed a pile of rules; APHIS stayed its lemon rule; a bunch of other agencies are withdrawing rules all over.
i work in a regulatory lawfirm; this is wreaking havoc with our ability to advise our clients.
personally, i think most of this stuff will be back up within 7 to 60 days. i look at the Fed Reg every day; when i see they’re re-published i’ll post it.

It’s exactly the same thing every administration does. You have the same problem every lawyer has when an administration changes.
My comments are mostly directed at [those] who suddenly discovered “soring” when Trump issued his directive.

You’ll be pleased to know I’ve been upset about soring for decades, Guilherme. The first time I saw a TWH show in person rather than just pictures or statues I was horrified.

i will have to disagree; i’ve been doing this for 20 years and have never seen wholesale withdrawals and stays like i’m seeing this week.
and don’t get me started on the EPA gag order. at least Ag un-gagged itself this morning.
as for soring–i have fond memories of calling and yelling at my congressbeings over the years on this. “No, horses not courses. here’s the bill number— no, HORSE protection” and whinnying into the phone…
Who says we haven’t been upset over this issue for decades? Who says we haven’t been fighting for it? when it FINALLY got done, Your CHUMP decided to stop it.
Never underestimate the power of millions of snowflakes. They routinely paralyze cities, including Washington DC.

:lol::lol:
The actual tiny crystalline water snowflakes, yes.
The political ones, not so much. Those are so prevalent, no one really notices. There are protests in this town almost daily. It’s no big deal if you live here.

^^^This! Thank you!!
At one point (70’s-80’s?) we thought the fight was won when inspections were started…not so much. I am very skeptical because as long as these horses win and feed their owners and trainers egos this will go on. When you live in a small world and see the same things everyday, these things become normal regardless of what they are…
Trump has not been involved in the TWH or Big Lick issues. He doesn’t have a Secretary of the USDA confirmed yet. Of course he puts it (and other legislation) on hold.
Let me ask you this…would you sign any contracts or documents without reading them?
This is the thing. If ASB’s just used “a pad” I don’t think anyone would have a problem with Saddlebred shoeing. But they don’t. Many times they are stacks of pads and wedges, looking very much like TWH stacks.
So if 4-5 inches of pads are illegal, why wouldn’t 2-3 inches be illegal??
Bad argument.
The saddlebreds that have the 2 inch stacks are few and far between. There are no 3 inch stacks on saddlebreds. Most saddlebreds show with 1 inch or less.
You are finding the few “old timers” and the backyard trainers that are using old and outdated methods on their horses. Ask ANY saddlebred trainer nowadays and they will tell you that “less is more” and that the “good ones go light.”
If the industry was prevented from using their 1 inch of pad, then you would see people growing a longer hoof on their horses which would be more detrimental to the horse.
interesting.

Stack of pads? Take a look at any picture of WGC Along Came a Spider
Too much foot? Take a look at any picture of WGC Our Charming Lady.
These are wins in recent years, at the VERY top. No excuse for putting a ridiculous amount of shoe, foot or pad on a horse. None.
As I said… a few Old Timers.
Also as far as the legislation, it turns out that Trump did not put a hold on this. He had nothing to do with it.
If you look on the Federal Register, it shows that APHIS pulled the rules prior to publication so they never even made it to the stage where Trump would put a hold on it.
I called APHIS and spoke to them. They pulled it for “further advisement.” I have a feeling they are going to wait. Once they publish “final” rules, they are locked into it. I think they are waiting to see how this administration is going to work before they submit anything final.

This is not a long foot or too much foot?? It sure is to me.
As stated, My charming Lady is the exception to the rule. Modern trainers are of a different mindset. You will occasionally see a three gaited or fine harness horse with a longer hoof as those divisions don’t necessarily have to show as much speed at the trot as a 5 gaited or a pleasure horse would, so you will occasionally see some of the “old time” trainers pack a bigger shoe or longer hoof in those divisions.
The modern mantra is “the good ones go light” and with the exception of Along Came A Spider and Our Charming Lady and a couple of others, the big shoes and tall hoof walls are usually not even placing at shows because they tend to be too labored looking.
INSTEAD OF LOOKING AT THE SELECT PHOTOS AD EXAMPLES offered, how about looking at the entire industry.

Go to “show proofs” and pick any show and take a look. You will see that I am right. Most ASB and Morgan horses show with a smaller hoof than in the past. The trend is lighter and faster on shoeing. The longest hooves and biggest packages will be in the 3 gaited and Fine Harness classes.
The Arabians have gotten just as bad, with the clown shoes and wedges. If the trend is toward lighter that would be awesome…and a law would have no effect on those breeds because they would already have eliminated the packages.
