Equine nutrition: Thrives food

http://www.thrivefeed.com/ThriveIn.html

Someone talked in really good words about this company. anyone has experience to share ?
I can see most of the dealers are in Texas…

Thanks !

I use Thrive and in my opinion, it is the best horse feed on the market. I’ve used it for several years, in fact one of my horses has only ever had Thrive, and they are all doing excellent. Most dealers are in Texas because it’s made in Texas.

Honestly I can’t tell from the webpage what makes them different from any other quality extruded feed. There is a whole lotta huff n puff but no obvious claims about ingredients or nsc that I can get at easily on my phone.

Ok found the ingredients. Looks like an alfalfa soy meal etc pellet which is a reasonable thing but not new or unique.

Says non GMO grains but doesn’t have grains in it. The only two ingredients that could be GMO are the alfalfa and the soy.

No statement on NSC which I would always want to look for.

Probably a fine lower starch feed but not unique and perhaps overhyped and over priced.

Ooops missed that! Zombie post!

Just thought I would share my experience with Thrive Feed. Didn’t mean to pick such an old thread to respond to. To Garythesquirrel and Scribbler, thanks for the warm welcome [edit]

So JBob, you joined COTH just to come here and PIMP this food? Well, Bless Your Heart!!

I fail to see what’s wrong with pointing out my observations on the feed, which is that it looks like a decent alfalfa soy meal pellet, probably lowish NSC but doesn’t state it, and not that unique in modern feeds?

If you are familiar with COTH you will see that folks are analytical of everything. That’s why this is such a good forum for learning things. If someone more knowledgeable in equine nutrition than me chimes in to point out something especially wonderful about the feed I will stand corrected.

If you look at past threads on new niche market feeds you will see that they tend to be scrutinized pretty closely.

Not to mention it was by a beloved, sadly missed  poster.

My apologizes Scribbler. I’m not an expert on feed by any means. I’ve tried several brands and Thrive works well for me, nothing more, nothing less.

Glad the feed works well for your horse’s. I feed a 14 percent calf feed, cheap horse loves it. And looks fabulous…
Curious how much does the thrive feed cost per bag?

Not to mention you (JBob) bumped a thread posted by a beloved, and sadly missed poster, who passed away 4-1/2 years ago…

Quite a lot

(Note that’s a 40# bag, too)

The NSC of both the regular, and the LNSC feeds are listed in the ingredients lists - 27% and 16% respectively. No thanks, and still no.

But the LNSC is something I wouldn’t feed not for the NSC which, at 16%, is reasonable. It’s nutrient content is too low, and not necessarily balanced in ratios.

It’s definitely an over-hyped and WAY over-priced feed. I am constantly amazed at the number of people telling others to free-choice feed it until they slow down. Yes, even the 27% regular feed

There is SO much bad “science” around this feed which is even more off-putting. Things like, NSC doesn’t matter with forage-based feeds, only grain-based feeds.

Sorry, I’m not following this. What is LNSC feed and where are you seeing the NSC percentages? I haven’t seen any ill effects, but I need a fairly low NSC feed, What do you recommend.

I think you’re thinking of Total Equine Feed. Totally different feed. I am referring to Thrive Feed.

You’re right, I am totally thinking of TE!

But, my thoughts on Thrive are the same - over-hyped, over-priced, bad science press.

The NSC is 24%.

It’s not fortified, and it’s not balanced in and of itself. Neither of those things make it a bad product, but it’s not the second coming that Dale wants everyone to believe.

Here’s a longer thread on this product - the original post is pretty old, and it got dragged up a few times, so ignore dates

Whut? You need a low NSC feed, but you don’t know the NSC value of this stuff you’re touting, which is 24%?  :frowning:

(Protip: 24% ain’t “fairly low” NSC)

How do you know the NSC is 24%?

Not touting, relaying my experience with it. My horse does well regardless of whatever the NSC is. First I’ve ever heard it was 24%.
