F.T. Saratoga Select Yearlings 2018

Maybe it would not have taken you years to learn things if you went back into the barn area and spent time looking at the horses in person. Most of what I learned about the auction scene was from working for consignors all over the country when I was much younger. I had the benefit of knowing my consignment inside and out, and also looking at other consignors’ horses, and seeing the results. It’s a much better perspective than sitting inside the pavilion and watching a horse a minute go by.

I’d hazard a guess that gumtree spent plenty of time back in the barns, not just sitting at ringside..

I think the point is that a good student of horseflesh takes the time to learn, gain a LOT of knowledge and experience in all areas before dipping a toe in the water. This is not a business best learned by jumping in with both feet, unless you have many millions to burn.

the last thing I’d be doing is throwing shade at Gumtree, who BTW is probably one of the most seasoned and well respect TB breeders/owners who posts on this forum. Palm Beach woke up on the wrong side of the bed again it appears

I am literally dying over here.

Holy hell, that has to be one of the top ten most ignorant comments on the entire forum. Wow!

At least I’m not the only one

Oh dear, I am clutching my pearls!!

Yeah, I’ll concede that gumtree has years on me.

…and the fact that he was literally born and raised into Fasig-Tipton.

And as usual, you don’t get it.

Who would have thought that a thread about the Saratoga Select Yearling sale (and my enthusiasm for it) would turn into a Palm Beach ego trip. Let’s leave that behind…

I see that Shriek’s filly is hip #107 so she is up on the first evening.

LaurieB, I’ve watched your homebreds in the ring for several years now ( I’ll never forget that stunner by Arch  ). You are obviously not one to toot your own horn, but you have upon my inquiry, let me know if any of yours are selling, which is very nice of you.

I certainly wouldn’t blame you if you announced to the forum and the world that your homebred mare has a filly in the F.T.Saratoga sale, but of course you didn’t. Anyway, I think it is quite an accomplishment.

I noticed Shriek’s filly due to the small size of the Saratoga catalog in comparison to Keeneland September.

I see 9 Honor Code yearlings. (He did get some lovely mares) Five fillies and four colts.

15 by American Pharoah. One filly out of a full sister to Jimmy Creed. A filly out of Life at Ten.
A colt who’s damsire is Smart Strike and 2nd dam a full sister to Galileo.

The pedigrees at this sale are always impressive. I haven’t finished looking through the catalog yet.

Oh please, this whole thing was started by gumtree’s snide remark to me. You all need to get off your high horses - your smell is wafting across several counties.

oh my …

Someone’s singing Lord, kumbaya
Someone’s singing Lord, kumbaya
Someone’s singing Lord, kumbaya
Oh Lord, kumbayah

everybody! Grab a hand!

You thought his comment was snide? I am thinking that most of the rest of us here think it was bang on. I know that I do. You seldom make a comment that isn’t “down your nose” at we mere mortals. I would wager the ranch that Gumtree has forgotten more than you’ll ever know. And, he has the kindness and generosity to share it with anyone who can use a bit of help, on any of the forums- KINDLY.

I’m looking forward to seeing Hollywood Story’s Honor Code colt, as well as Artisanal’s and Flawless Diamond’s fillies.

Apparently I misunderstood your experience. From your somewhat strident opinions on this subject I thought that you were interested in the yearling sale, whether to watch or buy. You made it clear that you are not interested in either watching or buying, since yearlings are not your “taste at all” and since you have never bought anything under two years old.

Now you’ve changed your mind and are going to try to find someone to “put together a partnership or something” to buy a no doubt, very expensive yearling at the FT Saratoga Selected Yearling sale, which takes place less than a week from now?

18 outs so far. It is disappointing when favorites are withdrawn, none of mine yet, but it does happen. The Medaglia D’Oro’s are well represented on the ThoroStride videos.

You are calling this post a “strident” opinion??? Or is it the one where I said I’m a doer, not a watcher?

"I have not turned my TV on during the day since May.

IDK, finding that elusive G1SW is not as easy as spending the most money. You usually need to spend 6 figures, but there have been plenty of 7 figure horses that don’t so as well as those who cost 6 figures. Would love to see Mendelssohn come back and win the BC."

My back fields are 3 ft tall due to the rain and my crazy work schedule, and my first thought this morning was, “It would be so nice to have a couple horses graze that down rather than have to keep mowing it.” So yeah, why not a couple yearlings??? There are always deals to be done, especially at auctions with the RNAs.

I really like the American Pharoah out of JZ Warrior. Really nice colt in his video as well (funny to see a TB video with that much footage, we need more of that!). If anyone is looking to donate some money Ill gladly take it off your hands to add this one to the barn

“There are always deals to be done, especially at auctions with the RNAs.”

Given the fact that the best judges of horse flesh in the world attend the major sales. I did a study of my own around 15 years ago to see how well RNA horses performed on the racetrack by the end of their 4 year old season. I took all of the RNA’s from the Keeneland Sept sale. I think it was 2001. Can’t find the file without digging deep, maybe in a land fill. Don’t remember the exact number of horses. But there were Plenty to work with, the number high enough to give credible results.
I broke it down into; never ran, not named, only broke their maiden, claiming, highest and lowest level, allowance, stake, black type stake. final race record and money won. Yes, there was the ODD horse that did really well. A number of them paid their way all things being equal. But the VAST majority didn’t. Esp the high priced back backs.

Basically in the end the end it comes down to; “Do you feel lucky”

I like doing research, statistics. To get credible numbers it is laborious. Might be worth doing it again because buyers have changed and there is new generation of “eyes” inspecting horses. The foal crop is about half of what it was when I did the study. Much easier to do now using the JC mare produce app.
