Lady A - back to Stonestreet, her breeder

Wonder who sheā€™ll end up going to. The BH article mentioned Curlin as conjecture.

That had to have been pretty amazing to be there during the auction for the hammer price on her.

Wonder how Lady Eli will stack up when she hammers down. A bit of an uneven comparison as Lady Eli is in foal to War Front while Lady Aurelia is open since she raced this year.

I will confess that while I like watching the ā€˜futureā€™ in the yearling sales, the breeding stock sales in November show seem to really show where to focus if youā€™re interested in breeding (yeah, duh  ).

When is Lady Eli scheduled to appear?

She is hip #111 today at Keeneland and the sale starts at noon. Sheā€™ll probably be in the ring sometime between 2 and 4 pm (there are lots of outs.)

As always, I was impressed by the handlers in the ring yesterday. Some of those pregnant mares were huge, and not pleased to be there. It seemed as if there was one man who did most of the evening. He must have been exhausted by the end of the sale.

There are a lot of outs this year. Do you have any insight into that LaurieB?

Stopchargingmaria was a featured mare on Foal Patrol last year. SCM had the courtesy to foal at a convenient time, and a lot of people (myself included) were able to see SCM 18 born, and stand within (I think) 30 minutes. We were able to see her growing, going out and romping in field with Mom, etc.

Will be following her future closely, and I hope she is successful. I feel like an aunt.

Lady Eli 4.2M to Hill N Dale.

Given what Lady Aurelia went for, thought Lady Eli would go for more than $4.2M considering in foal to what seems to me to be a ā€œpopularā€ stallion, War Front.

For the more knowledge, Iā€™d be interested in conjecture (I know thatā€™s all it would be  ) on why Lady Aurelia open went for more than Lady Eli in foal??? Is choosing your own breeding worth $3.2M?? Or is LA that much better than LE on paper?

Lady Eliā€™s laminitis struggle would give me pause if I were spending millions for a broodmare. I donā€™t know if it would affect the people who are actually spending millions though.

Not sure that it had anything to do with driving the price up, but Banke said she would have gone to any price to get Lady A back.

With the prices the way they are for the top mares, Iā€™m guessing that some owners who might have sold a mare or two and shopped for others to replace them, are opting to hold on to what they have instead. You might be surprised by how many people ā€œplayā€ the sale like itā€™s a game and love the action of the turnover. But at these prices, it begins to look like real money.

Also, the entries for this sale closed 3 months ago and lots of things can change in the meantime (mare aborts or is sold privately, for example. We had a mare entered later in the sale and sold her privately last month.)

The biggest difference is that Barbara Banke was buying out a partnerā€“so she was bidding 50 cents on the dollar. Lady Aureliaā€™s actual price is much less than it appearedā€“and also less than Lady Eli sold for.

LaurieB, thanks for the answer. Yeah, I saw the comment in BH that Barbara was willing to go even higher than Lady Aureliaā€™s hammer to get her but didnā€™t really understand the cost difference between the two mares (one of which was a two fer in foal to War Front (top covering sire). Yes, if you look at half the $7.5M down to $3.25, definitely less than Lady Eli.

Wonder why Lady Aurelia when to auction unless the partner absolutely wouldnā€™t sell directly to Barbara. Way too confusing for me

LaurieB, if you owned Lady Aurelia, who would you breed her to?? Curlin? Tappit? War Front? Iā€™d have to get someone else to make the breeding decision for me  Iā€™d probably be totally imprudent and use Kittenā€™s Joy

I would guess that selling at auction may be necessary to obtain ā€œfair market valueā€ in a legal sense. The mare is a large asset.

Sorry. Iā€™m answering a question that wasnā€™t asked of me. :o

skydy, thatā€™s the same answer I would have given. If the partners canā€™t agree on a price, the auction ring will do it for them.

As for who I would breed Lady Aureila to, I will have to give that some thought.

skydy, no problem and to both thanks, hadnā€™t considered that angle to get a fair market value (which truly isnā€™t what an appraiser would suggestion but what someone is willing to pay  ). And now we know what Barbara Banke would pay

The BH article though Curlin would be who Lady Aurelia would go to based partly on connections reasons.

Just curious of the more knowledgeable and if budget was no concern, who would you send her to  Always fun to see what others would do without the financial constraints.

Will also be interesting to see if both Lady Eli and Lady Aurelia pass on their ability as it seems many of the great race mares on the track donā€™t always pass it on.
