Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

Ah see - I even went looking for that on their site and couldn’t find it! I stare at a screen too much at work…

I hear you! It’s easy to overlook stuff.

If the PE cut fits my horse I’ll likely order addtl weights directly from the UK. If not I’ll probably try the Busse blankets in the plus size cuts.

SmartPak also has an “oversize” cut now but not yet in the 50 - 100 gram weights. But I did order a medium in that for my mom’s elderly draft. If it doesn’t get here before this next cold snap he’ll be dressed like a hobo in some of my back up blankets.

I have 4??? maybe 5… I think Busters and they’ve all been every bit as waterproof as the Titans!

This weekend I picked up one of my horses that I loaned out to a friend to keep her old man company. I knew he’d be scruffy, but didn’t expect to find rain rot under his coat. Sigh. Picked up an el-cheapo Amigo Mio on clearance at the feed store because I don’t want to deal with trying to de-fungus one of his nice blankets. Came out to a wet horse over his rump this morning. Most of the blanket seems waterproof but not over the hindquarters. Gah. At least it was a warm storm.

I too have been a diehard Rambo and was willing to spend the extra for fabulous fit, no rubs, design and security in the closures, breathable and waterproof. All that REALLY matters in a horse turned out in bad weather. Anyone who has kept horses on 24/7 or stalled knows they stand out in the rain sometimes. Just standing there. Cold, wet ears. I hate it. So super duper quality matters.

Here’s my 1680 and the Original w Leg Arches from a couple days ago. Soaked through into the liners.

During weather like this you really need a back up blanket to pull and replace if you bring them in to work or handle.

Can you post a pic of exatly what you ordered? They have several options. Thank you!

Alrighty, the Busse arrived yesterday. Here are the details:

Ordered here

https://www.equishop.com/en/winter-horse-rugs-up-to-500-gr-or-more/31543-busse-flexible-pro-250-horse-turnout-rug.html

On 12/22

I purchased the Flexible Pro in 250 g. This blanket also comes in 100 g and 50 g of fill (and maybe a sheet?) It’s 840 denier. This is a German brand, and they have other lines, but none with a higher denier. They also make a wug cut, and a plus cut, for thicker horses.

Here’s the website for the brand itself:

I paid $225 all in, for this blanket, the matching hood, and shipping. It shipped from Poland.

Here’s the horse in his 100g Rambo. He stands 16h and wears a 75" in Rambo.

And here he is in the Busse. Sizing is different–it’s back length? This is a 140cm. Which looks to be about the right length.

You can see that the drop is a little shorter.

The blanket has padding at the wither:

The tail flap is very generous (no strap for the tail inside the tail flap)

And it comes with a covered butt strap. It does have rings installed for leg straps, too.

The lining is this soft non satin fabric. It feels cosy, but also like it will collect stuff

Something that gives me a bit of pause is this weird dart on the neckline

Maybe it’s there to keep the blanket from binding around the shoulder? Unsure.

It’s pretty light and weighs 6.4 pounds. In comparison, this horse’s medium wug (different cut than this blanket, so not a straight line comparison) is 8.8 pounds.

Overall, it’s a nice blanket. It’s less of a copy of a Rambo than I’d hoped. We may be back down to temps that call for this fill next week, so I’ll see how it goes then.

Huh. I just realized the front closure is a little different than shown on the website.

Here’s what I have:

And here’s the site:

No second layer on what I got :-/

Thank you for the pictures.

If the PE cut doesn’t suit my horse I’m going to be trying those in the Plus sizes. I think the shop I sourced the 100 and 50 gram plus sizes ships from Austria. Which is just interesting to me

$359 for a 100g is hard to stomach. Stateline has some sizes under $300 but still that’s a lot.

So adorable all cozy and ready for the storm!

I’m looking to stock up on blankets as they go on sale, as my horses will be living outside 24/7 starting next summer.

For those who got the PE blankets, how would you say they fit? Average/normal/big/small?

I’m really surprised about the gaining popularity of PE on here. They’ve really lost popularity in their home country. Mainly due to not always being waterproof and being very very heavy when wet, and just in general. They take a long time to dry, quality can be inconsistent, and customer service isn’t great. I lived in Europe and heard this consistently over the years.

They do run generous, and I do own 2, a liner, and a neck cover, but they aren’t my “first string” and are back ups that mainly stay in storage.

I think I kvetched about it up thread but, earlier last week I pulled out the midweights and heavies. The heavy is ~20 yrs old and the midweight ~10. The midweight doesn’t fit him right anymore since he’s filled out so I decided I’d buy a replacement. $450 :scream:

I went with an Amigo, as much as I love Rambo I just couldn’t fork over an additional $200. I’m prepared to be fixing it every season… lol.

I know you didn’t ask this but because you mentioned being outside 24/7… if you decide to skip PE based on the so-so reviews, I don’t think you can go wrong with Rambo or Amigos. About 5 years ago I made the conscious decision to slowly replace the herd’s blanket with Rambos. It was painfully expensive, but worth it. I did it because I noticed that the only blanket[s] that I didn’t have to repair or replace or rewaterproof every season were Rambos. I also noticed the Rambos were lighter and just seemed to fit my horses better than their old brands (Northwinds, Buccas, Weatherbeetas, Schneiders).

My herd is TOUGH on their blankets. In addition to being out 24/7, they also never seek shelter when it snows or rains and they play rough with one another including biting/pulling each other’s blankets. They bathe in mud. I understand mud is one of the worst waterproof killers because the dirt gets into the weave and effects tension.

I mean brand new high dollar Rambo Supremes aren’t waterproof either it seems. So if I’m going to have to Nikwax stuff every season I might as well buy the $200 blankets instead of the $400 blankets!

UPS came through for me and my order is out for delivery today. I’ll check back in tonight or tomorrow with my preliminary fitting review of the PE.

Side note 1: I have insulated water bucket cozy things in my order too and am glad they are arriving in advance of this nasty weather

Side note 2: Aren’t you up near Chicagoland? I was looking at their weather forecast and saw a day next week with a high of negative 2!!!

I agree. My default has been Rambo, mainly. Now I’m like, what do I do? Why does it all seem a bit crap at the moment?

If I have to waterproof them, then I’ll absolutely choose the cheaper option that fits well. I still don’t love how heavy the PE’s get and how long they take to dry though.

It’s all bad lol!

I really love the fit of the Amigo XL on my horse but it’s pretty heavy (dry!) and the waterproofing only lasted a season in light use in a mud free paddock and while not as expensive as the Rambos, $315 for a no fill sheet set isn’t exactly cheap either.

I have a SmartPak brand blanket coming for my mom’s draft, it doesn’t have the fun V front clips but it’s supposedly an “oversize” cut. I’ll be interested to see how it does.

Are you familiar with the Busse blankets from your time in Europe?

I am familiar with Busse, because I have a few items from them, but I’ve never used their blankets and I don’t recall seeing one on person either. In general I’ve not had an issue with their products and haven’t heard any complaints. A friend as a few things from them too. I’d be open to trying a blanket from them.

Yeah, and we’re in the middle of a wicked snowstorm. I wouldn’t have made it home without 4wd. The drift in front of the door was a foot and a half or more. Ugh.

I mean, based on what I’m reading in this thread, you no longer “get what you pay for” with Rambo. My mare has a Rambo heavyweight, and it’s meh for how much I paid for it. I hate that it doesn’t have shoulder gussets.
