Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

You gotta wonder how much of this is going on and no one knows if they’re not checking. I ONLY thought to check with the recent shock of my not yet 3 yo Supreme not waterproof. I did not expect to find this today and am pretty much horrified.

I’ve had my new Supreme 1680 for 2 weeks. Of course it’s 33° and rainy tonight. :unamused:

Exactly. I’m expecting another rainy spell this weekend and will be monitoring my Amigo XL sheet closely. While I can rewaterproof, I’m not interested in paying that much for the waterproof to fail that fast.

FWIW, the Rhino + the 3 Amigos (lol, pun unintended) I bought last year are all still perfectly waterproof. :woman_shrugging:

The SmartPak Ultimate that I picked up used leaks through a bit. But, I have no idea exactly how old it is or how it was cared for before I purchased it.

That is good to hear. So here’s a question - what is best to waterproof a sheet? Is it toxic or does it make sense to do it? I love my black Supreme and want it waterproof.

I used to work in the outdoor gear industry - generally speaking you can’t add waterproofing, but you can make it more water RESISTANT.

There’s multiple options - a wash and treat (two steps!) with waterproof specific detergent and treatment will refresh what’s there. You can also spray the face fabric with a “waterproofing spray” (this is a misnomer, again it won’t be waterPROOF) like ScotchGard or NikWax brand. There’s some other waterproofing sprays that are basically a plastic coating, but they leave a weird film and discoloration.

All of these options will help water bead off, but the compromised membrane and baked in treatment of the blanket will never be replaced to the original standard. Meaning there will be a point where the blanket ultimately soaks through - but you can delay that with proper washing and treatments.

I can attest to this. I have a beloved old Weatherbeeta Freestyle sheet that is such a wonderful fit (and a cute pattern). I’ve had it professionally re-waterproofed twice and still water goes right through it. Such a bummer because it was such a nice reminder of the horse I bought it for, who I lost a number of years ago.

 My new Supreme is not waterproof, what a disappointment!! Thankfully Adams Tack is trying very hard to make this right. Great customer service sure helps, especially during these types of clusters.

WOW. I bought mine through them too. Actually this year I bought the Autumn Series waterproof, and Original and TWO Supremes. I was working today on registering all the purchases since I’ve been a dufus in the past and never read the details.

I think there’s going to be a massive problem with the new Supremes. Did Adams say they’ve had other calls?

Hopefully it was just one bad batch of 1680 fabric. There had been other complaints.

Last night it was 57 and raining and I thought a good time to test the Autumn Series. NOT waterproof. I have pictures. I’ve got to be strategic in that I NEED waterproof blankets, have spent…mmmmm $1300 on three Rambos and one is waterproof. This is crazy.

Planning to order another brand and will look back through this thread.

The Rambo warranty only covers a replacement so there’s that. There doesn’t appear to be a refund option. Has anyone ever gotten a refund instead?

The mesh and inside lining is wet.

Bummer.

It rained last night but it was in the 70s (F) so I didn’t blanket. The horses do have shelter and it only rained about a quarter of an inch…

Those PE blankets are looking better and better. Though I am going to try the Rambo wash and rewaterproofer on my existing blankets after I do another test in rain. (I do have spares plus coolers and such)

I wonder if the retailer you purchased from would be willing to refund.

My horses are out in the downpour today and perfectly dry in their Weatherbettas and Bow Horse blankets.

Kinda glad I didn’t “splurge” on Rambos this year like I was planning after all these posts.

Definitely grateful for my PE blankets! We haven’t had any huge storms yet but we did get about 1/2" one day last week and everyone was dry and warm even though they stood out in the rain the entire time. I hope the folks with faulty Rambos are able to get a refund. Those are way too pricey to hlbe defective out the box.

I bought a new horse this summer so have purchased a bunch of new blankets for him, all Horseware. An Amigo Bravo sheet, Rambo 100 gram, Amigo 100 gram Wug, Amigo Bravo medium. All have been waterproof. I got the same Rambo 100 gram for another horse and it’s also fine. So maybe it’s just the supreme fabric?

I have a WB 100 gram that my riding horse has worn regularly for many seasons now, the fit isn’t ideal for the horse but it’s useable and has worn well.

Someday I need to read all the way through this thread. It’s nice to know there are people crazier about blankets than me :stuck_out_tongue:

I just finalized the sale on my Appendix mare yesterday, and gave the new owner most of her blankets. Her other horse is part yak, so this was all new to her and I’m like, here’s her light rain sheet, heavy rain sheet, 50, 100, 220, 400, BoT… no really, it’s fine, she’s not that delicate!

But anyway, my WB yanked a chest strap off her Schneider’s Techno-Fleece yesterday, so I got online and found that Chick’s has a bunch of the Horze Avalanche sheets and turnouts for like $75 (heavies might be $85?). I snagged one of those in a 150. With her proclivity for yanking chest straps, I’m hoping the different design on the Horze might work. Also, everyone always looks at you weird when you say Horze out loud, but I thought others here might want to know about the good deal.

Last night I snagged a like new Sailrite LSZ machine off Craigslist for $500, so now I can be better about repairing instead of replacing. Woohoo.

I know. I realized that I may have a problem when I started thinking that I wanted to have a blanket with a detachable neck AND a Wug cut in every weight (for all three horses, mind), so I could swap them out. What was the name of that financial advisor who used to quip STOP THE INSANITY! That’s what I need to tape on top of my monitor.

I’m a loyal Horseware consumer, regardless of this latest hiccup. I’m switching back to the Duo. I’ve owned Duo’s an Optimo & a Wug, never had issues before. Of course this TB is in a size I didn’t currently have.

Well, it appears that all my fuss about blankets for Lola wasn’t really necessary. She has yet to be blanketed at all - which I am not thrilled about, but she seems to be doing OK. (I don’t care about cold as much as I care about cold rain.) BO keeps saying that they’ll start blanketing “when low temperatures stabilize” but New England winters are no longer like that. We’ve had a lot of days where it’s in the low 20s overnight and 40s during the day.

Meanwhile, with Feronia I’m just trying to convince BO not to blanket her as much. Yes, she’s old, but she holds her weight well.
