Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

Yes exactly! I tried an 87 instead of 84 and that was worse bc it was longer and just dragged back. The Amigo XL fly sheet sucked too. His Kensington fly sheet has been the best fit so far there (sadly the turnout blankets are styled differently). Naturally this horse is sensitive to cold, rain, heat and bugs so he “needs” a lot of clothes.

Adding “Equine Wardrobe Director” to my job titles

I think my youngster is going to be on the busty side. The Amigo I put on him last night looked…stupid :joy: it was a new one, and I think my older Amigo Bravo is more generous, but I didn’t have it with me.

Surprisingly, I bought a 150g Centaur last year when he was more narrow because I was told that would fit a more narrow type, and it worked last year, but was a bit on the large side, but this year, with some adjustment it still fits well enough. I was surprised. He outgrew everything else from last year.

The couple I’ve tried have run large. They’re just a lot of blanket. Long, heavy, lots of hardware. I have a fly sheet that has like seven or something Velcro straps along the neck. Rubs like crazy. They’re just…a lot. Of everything.

That’s a good description.

I was just sorting through some blankets and I put the PE (100g) on top of an Amigo Bravo (100g) and the PE was about 2 inches longer along the back, and an inch or two longer in drop. A lot heavier though. Not in fill, but just in stuff.

Sounds like a deal, but would be a much better deal if the blankets held up in the first place. Spoiler alert: they don’t.

That 1050 denier material rips like tissue paper. I spent several hundred dollars on a full collection of Ultimates for my then 6yo TB. All of them were shredded within a week. Constantly replacing blankets became beyond irritating and tiresome.

Switched to Schneider’s Warrior blankets and haven’t looked back. Some are on their 3rd season and not so much as a snag in the fabric, even though my guy and his turnout buddies continue to be menaces to society. The most I’ve had to do is have a replacement dee ring sewed on for the neck cover clip. Waterproofing (knock on wood) has not been an issue, even in heavy rain.

Long story short - 0/10 do not recommend SP Ultimates unless you have a unicorn horse who doesn’t roll, play, or otherwise endanger their clothing in the slightest.

ETA: Exhibit A - Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, and the Rambo Protector Fly Sheet I resorted to putting over the Ultimates.

Well that’s terrible. Nobody has time for that.

I haven’t had any issues with torn blankets except an ancient cheapo got caught and ripped on splintered wood as my horse panic ran through said wood. Better the blanket than the horse of course.

ETA for clarity I don’t own any SP Ultimates.

Why is a basic Amigo 1200d 100g turnout up to a whopping $189?? That’s crazy.

I’ve been looking at new blankets and the Horseware prices are more insane than ever. I am normally fine paying, but now I’m hesitant due to recent reviews.

I was really hoping young horse would inherit former horse’s collection of size 75 blankets, which consists of mostly Rambo that I know are waterproof, but I put a 75 on him today because he outgrew 72 seemingly overnight, and honestly, he’s well on his way to 78. He’s going to be a busty one with a decent neck on him too (he’s a rising 3 PRE).

So sad to have to disperse my excessive collection

Not sure what to go with for the new stuff, tbh.

Yeah, I suppose maybe I just love PE so much because they were light years better than the other blankets I’d had issues with, lol! I haven’t noticed them being heavier than my other blankets, but IDK–it’s been a few years since I compared with anything else but Shires. I was a long-time diehard Schneider’s fan until 2019 when I went through 6 blankets and they basically told me I was expecting too much (asking blankets to be waterproof for, you know, days instead of hours). The PEs have held up admirably to my frat house mud monsters, and don’t rub even my delicate flower. I don’t re-waterproof every season, just wash in Nikwax Rug Wash, and generally haven’t had to baby them.

I haven’t found them to have any more hardware than any other blankets, but I rarely use their necks. Two chest straps, two belly straps, two tail straps or a tail cord. I don’t have any fly sheets, tho.

Maybe if I had experience with the old Rambos, I would have a lower opinion of PE blankets. But since I will fully acknowledge that I have never been willing to pay upwards of $350 for something my horses have a reasonable chance of destroying, I’ve never handled them and certainly won’t now with some of the reviews. Some of them being $500+ is just eyewatering to me. I was never more than “meh” about the Rhinos I’ve owned (only two), and the Amigo I just bought is abysmal (not waterproof, and has a giant rip in it on day 2. Nice.).

See, I wanted to love the Warriors SO BAD!!! I had a couple midweights that did well. The fit was great for my guys. But their 80gm VTEK was AWFUL. I tried SIX and every single one leaked within a couple hours. I assume it has to do with the seam along the back because they were all sorta dry along their topline but soaked from top of the ribs down. To their credit, they kept sending me new ones until they finally told me it was asking too much to have a blanket be waterproof for more than 12 hours. When I said their midweights were doing just fine but their lightweights weren’t, they basically just shrugged.

That experience alone soured my on Schneider’s. If I lived somewhere that I needed a midweight more often than a few times a year, I probably wouldn’t have batted an eye. But I needed the lightweight. Four years on and I’m still disappointed, lol

Had to breakdown and buy a few for new horse…I ended up with Schneider’s. I really like the Stormshield 1680d mediums and wish they came in a 100g version. They don’t so I just got the 1200 for $80 because no way am I paying $190 for an Amigo that isn’t that much better and won’t last “forever” either. Horse is 5 and I expect more filling out anyway. I got him a medium too and I spent same as I would for one Amigo.

Amigo used to be the economy line but now they dumbed it down to add Hero and the 900 and Mio so that now the 1200d is somehow supposed to represent a high end version.

I am still a Horseware fan and own many. I do have a new Rhino sheet but haven’t opened it yet - bought it as a spare for one that kept trying to eat the front closures and haven’t needed it yet. When I do, I’ll see if it’s as good as the old ones.

I’d had rotten luck with Schneiders being waterproof years ago. But I was teased in on a good sale about two years ago and bought a few more. Nothing had changed - they still were not waterproof. They sent me a few replacements and I finally begged them to stop and just give me a credit. They did.

Does anybody own the Big D’s line? I got an email yesterday about a BOGO sale, and another of theirs was $59… all I could think of was this thread…lol

No, but I’ve liked the fit of other “American” sized blankets I’ve owned.

I have been a huge Rambo/Rhino turnout fan. My old man wears Rhino Wugs and they fit him perfectly, have stayed waterproof, and have worn well until this year. My other gelding has been biting holes in the butts of the turnouts - which is weird because he never even scrapes the hair off of his playmate when he isn’t wearing a rug.Certainly not a fault of the rugs but I’m worried about what I’m going to replace them with now.

Last year I bought Rambo rugs for my new horse and they held up well. This year this horse needed one size up since he had put on weight and muscle. I bought him two new Rambos and while they have stayed waterproof they just don’t feel like they are the same quality. The hardware seems thinner and lighter and the belly straps feel downright flimsy. In fact, they are so thin that they often don’t stay at the length I put them at - they just slide through the metal slide piece. The belly straps on my old Rhinos are considerably more stout than those on the new Rambos. It will be interesting to see how these new blankets hold up over this year. I will say that while they have stayed waterproof they have not really been put to the test. We’ve only had relatively brief rains so far this winter. It’s those multi day rain events that really show you what you have.

Now my new horse needs a medium weight turnout for some coming bad weather (I generally use sheets and 100 gm). I’m not sure what I’m gonna buy but what I’m not gonna buy is a $400.00 Rambo with flimsy straps and hardware.

I caved and ordered a new 100g Rambo for $250. My last horse had one and it was so useful, but I sold it to his new owner along with him. I bought it gently used, so I’m not sure how old it actually was. I am curious to see what this new one is like. I do like a 100g and their liner system.

I’m also considering trying the Lemieux blankets.

I’m so sad that I’ll have to sell off my 75" collection from my last horse. I was hoping that young horse, of the same breed and type, would grow into them and remain at that size but since he’s already wearing the 75’s and hardly even 3 yet, that was just a dream  I may still hold on to some of the older Rambo blankets though. Not sure yet.

I find myself rather surprised hearing that some have been disappointed with Schneiders…I have always been very happy with their blankets; but I found I do have to order their best quality. The ones made of ballistic nylon (now called Warriors I think) and the 1689 denier polyester (the Stormshields) have been great for me. We just had a whopping snow storm … one mare wore her 5 year old Stormshield and my gelding his 3 year old Stormshield and stayed perfectly warm and dry…neck rugs were fine too.
I also really like the Bucas…my younger mare wears the Atlantic w/neck cover. By the way it also has a shoulder dart; it prevents rubbing
None of my Schneiders blankets have ever rubbed.
However.I do know someone who paid a small fortune for a Rambo Duo 10 YEARS ago that leaked after two weeks. She luckily had a back up Hug blanket to use.

I ordered 12 blankets from Schneider. No fill, lightweight, medium, heavy each for 2 horses and a pony. Order was a little over 2k. Only one of the heavyweight horse blankets was water proof. Everything else leaked and horse was wet under the sheet/blanket.

I will never order from them again, but if you do get one that’s waterproof, they are nice blankets. I liked the fit.

My Weatherbeetas have been waterproof going on 3 and 4 years so far. The Bow Horse blankets have kept my horses dry even in the drenching rain we just had, and neither of those brands are heavy when wet so even with my bad shoulder I can throw them up on the blanket hooks with no pain.

Once upon a time, they were the gold standard of turnout blankets. But I haven’t owned one in a good 30 years.

I love the fit of Rambos and Horseware, but here’s what I have had in them past two years on their newer blankets:

Rambo original sheet w leg arches- tail wrap totally ripped off on 3rd year of use.

Rhino varilayer Wug medium- inside lining ripped to shred on first year of use. Horse wore for maybe 2 months.

Rambo Duo- the 100g outer turnout shrunk and became all crinkled and puckered. It no longer fit my older guy so I put it aside. As he passed away, I put it on my new one and within a day he ripped off the extra 3rd belly strap.

Amigos have have poor waterproofing in my experience and I tried a Hero ripstop a few years ago which was cheap and indeed ripped. Their old Hero 600d was much better but they don’t make that any longer.

So unfortunately for me, I think I am done spending hundreds more for blankets I am not supposed to have to replace. I have a garage full of ones that I need to take in for repair.
My old Rambo original mediums purchased from the clearance site Net Equestrian years ago are still going strong so there is a definite change in quality over the years.

ETA- 20 yr old horse in paddock with one other horse wore these blankets so not a lot of roughhousing going on
