Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

Do you recall which series/line you got? I’ve been happy with my 7 year warranty Stormshield or whatever that line is and just bought another. However it’s not the main blanket (it’s their teknofleece waterproof turnout) as it’s usually under something else.

I need more blankets and am back and forth on the Bow Horse and Schneider’s. I like things about both of them (no personal experience with the Bow yet though). I’d buy 4 more v-front Amigos and Rhinos as I love the fit but waterproof is essential.

My mare wears 78" in the rambo duo force which fits her really well but it started leaking a tiny bit along the butt seams. Last summer I ordered a rambo flysheet in 78" and it did NOT fit her shoulder or belly - way too small - so I tried an 81 and it looked like an oversized mumu. Nope. So I got a weatherbeeta fly sheet (duramesh comfitec I think?) in 78" and it fit perfectly. I’m strongly considering the Weatherbeeta winter blankets as much backups/next set. Glad to hear a good review here. Which line do you use from weatherbeeta and do you know how it compares to the rambo fit?

My 100 gram is delayed- I should have known since it’s coming from State line tack. But I think it did finally ship.

Has anyone tried a Lemieux blanket? Thoughts? I might need a new heavyweight with a hood for next season.

I know one was the Challenger with belly band line. All had wither relief except the pony stuff. I loved the belly band. Fit fine, just not water proof.

I buy the Weatherbeetas when they do the clearance in the spring so it was 40.00-80.00 a blanket which is very reasonable imo. Keep an eye on their site in Feb/March. They usually mark down blankets that are last years colors.

Not who you were asking but I’ll chime in because I have these too - I used to only buy Weatherbeeta but the fit and durability was a problem. Waterproofing was great!

I had their top of the line Comfitech as well as Generos. Comfitechs are mostly duct tape after a season. The Generos are still intact actually, but no shoulder gussets. I hate the way the Comfitech neck cover attaches, there’s a huge gap between it and the chest and the neck part bunches up.

For comparison, the Horseware V fronts fit MUCH better, followed by my Horze Avalanche high necks. The Amigo V front with neck attachment started to rip after three seasons of heavy use but is still mostly useable. Avalanches are still intact so far as well.

If you like the Rambo fit, you’re likely going to be disappointed with the Weatherbeeta. I find they don’t fit the same horse . However, they’ve been waterproof so far, so that’s something! For my guys, a high neck cut seems to be the key to getting an acceptable fit, so YMMV.

Ditto. I was actually never a WB fan, but I bought two Comfitechs for my donkey in the past 5 years or so. The fit is “meh” and the waterproofing has not lasted.

My horses are super easy on blankets so I’ve never had durability issues with any blankets. They are all in near perfect condition minus a leg strap or two I replaced.

Yes to the Comfitech neck. I was buying the high necks and adding my own D rings for hoods to combat that on the heavy’s. Looks like the Ultra line has solved that. I don’t use necks except on heavyweight blanket as my climate is fairly mild.

I’m updating all my blankets to the Bow Horse ones as they are my favorite so far. But I’m not tossing my perfectly good waterproof Weatherbeetas either.

I’ve found for my guys and our weather, the Weatherbeetas are the best. I’ve been very disappointed in the Schneiders - I think all of mine are the Challenger line, blankets and sheets. Some are fairly waterproof and some soak right through. In all the time I’ve had the WBs, it’s happened with maybe one. Some of them are going on 10 years old, never been re waterproofed, and still work great. I just keep an eye on sales like mentioned above. Last year I got a $400+ blanket for $170.

I’m in the PNW, so the waterproofing is put to the test.

That was my main complaint though; I was buying their “top of the line” and best quality blankets, but still not waterproof. So I’m just really hesitant. I do browse their website from time to them, but I cannot commit

Tried the Premier Equine 250 gram Buster on my horse today. The sizing is generous. My horse wears an 84” across all brands. This 84” is long. The drop is very generous too, comparable to his Amigo XL.

Overall it fits my horse better than his 250 Rhino Wug and the price was right ordering from SmartPak so I’m keeping it.

Mine has the “triple Velcro” which I like. However, like most blankets the neck opening is too small for him.

I do like the cut of The PE. I’d like to compare it to the LeMieux blankets. Specifically the Kudos. I already have an PE and don’t like how heavy it is, especially when wet (it’s a 100g and I have a 250g liner). So I think I may give the LeMieux a try. It’s just hard to find reviews on their blankets, but they are newer to the turnout blanket market. I own tons of their saddle pads, and have no issue with those, but that’s an entirely different bit of kit.

The PE is pretty heavy. I wouldn’t want to have to wash it by hand that’s for sure. TBD if I think it makes a difference, but I like the idea of the high shoulder gusset.

I’ve not handled one of the LM blankets, but they do look nice!

I got one of the new SmartPak “oversize” cut blankets for my mom’s elderly draft. It’s a 220 instead of a 250 and a 78 instead of a 84, but it was very light weight compared to the PE. I believe it’s part of their “deluxe” line. We’ll see how it wears, but I like several of its features and the cut was a good match on the Belgian’s big neck and shoulders.

Y’all disregard my safety fails in this picture. The straps aren’t adjusted all the way in this pic so it’s gappy at his chest. Horse could probably have taken the next size down, but I think it’s good enough.

You know, 17 inches of snow and the bitter cold temps and a husband who is out of town makes for excellent blanket shopping :joy:
I did receive my Schneider’s neck covers yesterday and they are very lightweight.
Should be getting my next order this coming week.
I am thankful I don’t need to worry about waterproofing as much as some. One horses is pasture boarded but they can all come into a big cow barn. The other is stables and has access to a shelter and a stall for overnight and bad weather.
Any kind of constant wet will test waterproofing. Sorry the Schneider’s don’t work for many. They fit and material seem good, sounds like mainly the waterproofing is the issue.

So, against my better judgment, I went with Rambo again. I hope they don’t fail me. I’ve just always had good results with the fit and quality. Horse may be a bit busty, so ultimately he may end up in an Optimo, but I bought him the standard Rambo stuff for now.

I did buy a 100g turnout, 200g turnout wug, 200 liner, and an Amigo Bravo 12 plus, which is a 250g with hood (IIRC). Grand total of $750 :money_mouth_face: I combed the internet for as many deals as possible.

He’s still in the 75’s at the moment, but will surely be in the 78’s soon, if not tomorrow  I’ll keep this thread posted on any issues.

Just to follow up on the Busse blanket:

Temps dipped, and the horse is the pics is wearing the Busse. He’s been as cozy as I expected given the weight of the blanket, and it hasn’t, like, fallen apart or anything crazy with normal wear and turnout with other horses. It’s not been wet, so no test of the proofing. It seems to fit well, with no areas that are obvious rubbing concerns.

So far, so good.

I bought a lemieux midweight this fall and it’s ok. Has been gelding’s most used blanket for 2-3 months and no issues with tears or waterproofing thus far (though he is relatively easy on his blankets and pasture-mates don’t get overly rowdy), but its not a great fit for him (gaps at the chest and rubs his shoulders) and the front closure drives me crazy. They are t-bars but the top closure is angled in a way that makes it annoyingly hard to undo and redo.

I just replaced it with a rambo, but if not for the fit issues on him I likely would have persevered with it.

ETA: I have the arika storm-tek, I see they have a higher-end “kudos” line with shoulder gussets and a higher neck that I might consider trying next time

Thank you! I might pass then. I have a Schneider’s that sounds like it fits the same way and I tend to get frustrated with closures that are hard to deal with!

I do like the look of the Busse, but I’m not sure if it will work for a full figured Iberian.

I just put a 75" on him again today (swapped out blankets) and it’s an Amigo Bravo from my last horse…his bum hangs out slightly and I had to adjust the straps all the way out. So…hopefully the 78" version fits a bit better, but I think I’ll have no issue selling it if not.

He might also just be a bit fat  Which I’m somewhat ok with in these negative temps. Plus his shape is going to change as he gets more training/exercise this spring as a 3 year old, but his dam is rather wide herself and seems to pass on a wide and tall gene.

I bought this:

Here it is on the horse it was purchased for. Sorry for the rough phone photo, it was actually very dark when I snapped this photo.

We’ll see how it holds up. Hardware looks great, I’ll probably reinforce the straps like I do for all Amigos. It fits him great in the body but the neck is huge - he does have a shorter neck than ideal so that may be a Holden-flaw and not an Amigo flaw.

If you care about color, a forewarning that this blanket is not quite as pictured. In the Dover photo it looks like a stormy greyish blue. In person it is a deep shade of blue, no grey at all.

I do like the “eco” aspect of that. I’m curious to see how it holds up.
