Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

They very well could. I’ve had bad experiences with their waterproofing and others have to, but some have not. They’ve had issues with it over the years it seems.

I’ve personally never had an issue with Horseware turnouts. So I’ve stuck with them, but understand that some changes have taken place recently. So it’s a gamble with them too. It’s just that Schneider’s was not so easy to deal with when I had issues with their top of the line blankets that should not have happened

Honestly, nowadays, it just seems all over the place and there are just inconsistent experiences across the board with various brands.

Just this morning I put a 100gm Horseware liner under my 90gm PE blanket and thought again how much I like the PE too. Really like the 90gm fill in the hood and that it’s attached. DID have to get used to leg straps and did have one brain fart moment where I forgot about them the other day and went to pull the blanket and realized “Houston, we have a problem.” Luckily pony just stood there.

I have a 250 with detachable hood and am very impressed so far. It’s very breathable too.

Here’s some more pics including how I have to do the top chest closure. I do this or similar for all of his blankets across all brands less the Amigo XL and old Kensington fly sheet.

Do you find it heavy, as other posters have mentioned?

I feel like the older Smartpak Deluxe were average, but the new ones feel like feed bags they’re such a “crunchy” denier.

It’s relatively heavy yes. It’s also huge. Size down if between sizes for sure. Not heavy enough to impact my ability to swing it up onto the horse but heavy enough I wouldn’t want to hand wash it. It will definitely need a machine with a spin cycle.

The SP I got for mom’s horse seems ok. But it doesn’t have the nice feel like the PE does.

Interesting. So you’re putting both snaps on the lower only. What improvement does that make? I’ll go home after work and change it too then. Curious.

The ONLY thing I’d say about the PE vs Rambo is the shoulder doesn’t fit as well. And I’m SO picky about blanket fit knowing down to my cells that poorly fitting blankets make a horse sore - that’s awful. Imagine how hard it is to use their body best if they hurt from blanket fit. So really carefully watching the PE that it doesn’t bother him. But so so up a tree right now with little in the way of waterproof.

Yes. I do that because otherwise he’s pressing against the chest closures when he has his head down eating. Than that puts pressure on his withers. The shoulder fit in the PE is great for my horse it’s just the neck opening isn’t deep enough.

I just ordered a 1200D Loveson 100g w/ detachable hood on Stateline Tack for $70. I have never heard of the brand and I know Stateline Tack isn’t great about shipping quickly, but for the price I was willing to try it. Where I am they aren’t in 100gs that often because it gets very cold very quick, so it will mostly be used for a few weeks in fall and spring and than over a heavy during our sub-zero wind chill days. Given that, I didn’t want to shell out bigger bucks for something I won’t get as much use out of. I’m interested to see the quality in person, it looks quite nice on the photo: https://www.statelinetack.com/item/loveson-1200d-plus-100g-turnout/E048578/

I have noticed the pressure on the withers too.

I have an older PE blanket (maybe 3 to 5 years old?) that has padding at the withers. Both the liner (250g) and blanket (100g) have this design. I think it was the Lucanta. I’m not sure if it’s still be made. It does go a little further up the neck too, but the neck opening is not particularly large.

Mine has good padding at the withers and goes up his neck fairly far. Horse just needs an extra big neck opening. No shade on the PE for that as it’s an issue with all his clothes. I am likely to try one of the Busse blankets in their “plus size” cuts to see how that fits him

Keep us updated on that! I saw it on SLT and the price is certainly good!

Yeah, I am curious about the plus size Busse as well. I have enough “clothing” right now for my horse, but if I need something else, I’ll probably give that a try.

I’ve never had to blanket, but bought something to have on hand since I clipped my old gelding as late as the first week in October (when the heat was still brutal here). He’s grown quite a bit of coat since then, but it’s not his normal Yak pelt. Put it on him this week, whenever temps are below freezing, and I’m pleased for the money.

It’s the Country Pride Arctic Breeze Ballistic 1680D Midweight Turnout Blanket from Big D, selected due to over 50 5 star reviews and the $80 sale price. Hasn’t been out in rain yet, as we didn’t get the predicted precipitation. But the waterproofness is mentioned repeatedly in the positive reviews, and this might be an inexpensive option for persons such as myself who very rarely encounter these conditions and would prefer not to spend $$$$ on a blanket that will see scant use (I certainly hope) over the years.

It’s easy to feel like you have too many blankets. I need to pare down my collection of spares but it’s hard to let go of them.

What’s this … pare down … you speak of?

I have alllllllll my old blankets–going back 30 years at this point!–in the loft. I just can’t let them go. What if I need them?? :joy::joy:

I know! Might need them is valid!

My oldest is 10 ish so you got me there lol. Mr LS says he has a plan of how / where he can hook up my old washing machine just for horse laundry. If I can machine wash and waterproof my older blankets then maybe I can continue hoarding them lol

I actually had to use the “wrong” size (one size up) spare blankets on one of my horses tonight because it was my only option for a heavy with a full neck – turns out when she’s on the chunky size like she is now, it’s the right size! And because I never get rid of blankets, I have a medium wug and a sheet in the same size. Woo-hoo!

Real-time proof that you should never get rid of your old blankets!

Ha! I am trying to do this because I had ordered a few spare sheets and 100g from Schneider’s. There is a tack sale this weekend and though I am surrounded by blankets, I can’t seem to make a good argument to part with them  I’m also caring for a friends senior gelding so my late horses blankets fit him. My husband is practically begging me to get rid of a few. This requires some careful thought! One thing I know is I’m not parting with old Rambo originals. They are still like iron.

I have an approximately 25 year old medium weight original Rambo hanging in the barn that I just can’t bring myself to trash despite having the front ripped badly. This thread is making me think perhaps it IS worth getting it repaired :rofl:
