Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

Very careful thoughts.

I did sell one last year via FB. I sent another one to my mom’s house as a back up for the draft. If I can get rid of two more that’s probably good enough lol

When my Rhino Wug soaked through I had to cobble together an outfit for that horse. The aforementioned 10 yr old blanket was pressed into service lol.

It definitely makes sense to have a back up set! Or two!

I have 2 rainsheets and 2 stable blankets from the Big D line. I have found them to be excellent quality especially for the price. They come in a wide variety of sizes and seem to be true to size.

Remember that Big D and Big Dee are not the same. The former is a higher-end blanket manufacturer that markets to the stock horse world. The latter is a tack store that has the less expensive Country Pride blankets. I have a couple of stable blankets from them that are great for the price.

Don’t do that! The second you do that, you’ll need them. :joy:

I did a massive clean last winter and got rid of a lot of things that had been collecting dust. It’s hard for me to let go of things I spent appreciable money on, since I know often the replacement cost is so much higher than the original purchase cost.

I finally gave away a bunch of blankets and coolers that belonged to my late horse. They’d been sitting in a plastic Rambo bag since 2012 when he passed - he was a shrimp and all my current horses are huge. It felt very cathartic passing them off to someone who would get use out of them, and there was something nice about the idea of something of Spooky’s helping another horse.

But, I kid you not, four hours after I dropped off the blankets I got a text from my sister asking if I had any spare 75-78 blankets for her cow.

I for one would love to hear people’s organizing solutions to having all these blankets. I save all the plastic bags the blankets come in, and fold/store blankets that way. Additionally, all my blankets get cattle tags on the front chest strap, with the horse’s name and blanket weight (white tags - rain sheets/light fill, yellow tags = mid weight, orange tags = heavy weight) but even then, it can be hard to remember what all I have and/or where it is. Most of my blankets are folded in totes. I learned the hard way I can’t keep blankets on a rack here, because rodents will get into the shed and burrow in them.

Haha! That’s the way it goes sometimes. My local FB horse groups catch on fire when we have a cold front with people looking for used blankets. I had seriously considered selling some of my late TB’s blankets bc they don’t fit either of my current horses. I decided to wait since they are just one size too small for my big horse and can do in a pinch. Thought I’d wait until I got a set of properly sized back ups. Well then I started blanketing mom’s horse and these blankets are just a size too big for him so they can be his back ups too.

I do still have additional spares that I’d rather some poor horse wear in the cold than take up storage space lol.

Sure do, this is Pebbles! This was snapped the day she was picked up by my sister, at her former home. I’ll see if I have any other pictures.

My sister is in her farmsteading era - her husband raises cattle for meat, but Pebbles is a Normande and enjoys the pasture life. My sister makes soap with her milk & excess tallow from the meat processing. It’s an interesting life - I’ve helped her make soap a few times, and the tack cleaner in me has been fascinated by the process.

My Tough one 100 gram finally came in! Honestly I really love these blankets, for the price. But I have a quarter horse and they just fit him really well too.

I’m pretty excited to put it in action. I think it will definitely make my life easier

I have some Tough 1 blankets I bought locally. I think they are perfectly good blankets for the price point. They didn’t leak the first time they got rained on so that’s a fine start.

I have a few different weights that are on their second or third season and going strong! I just wish they made one with either a high neck or a head attached. For that I have to venture to different brands.

I have two with attached neck and a detachable neck cover I bought separately!

Oh really?? Do you know where you bought the ones with the attached neck?

I did buy a hood separately, which is working okay. It’s a little bit big but the reviews on the sizing was all over the place and made it seem like they ran small. So
I sized up. Lol. It’s doable on the occasions that he needs a hood but not ideal.

At a local feed store. They are both 300 grams. I panic bought heavies for all the horses I’m blanketing lol

I have the 250 gram detachable hood. It’s an unusual design but effective enough

Here’s the draft wearing his HW Tough 1

Wowza, that’s a lot of horse – how’d you get all of him to fit in one picture?! :joy:

No problem! I was so chuffed when I found them. We so rarely need a HW in my climate that the Tough1 price point made them a logical buy. And at only 300 grams they can sub as a medium weight’s back up in a pinch.

He’s really not that big maybe 16 hands wears a 78 blanket. He’s just stout.

He’s also old and very sweet. Very easy to work with

I just came across this article - speaking of how important a well fitting blanket is the the health of the horse and look at the bottom they specifically name Rambo for a fit that does not injure the horse.
